Let's make stamps and ink pads! DIY ink pads using old make-up supplies

  • I've been having fun recently making stamps, so thought I'd show the process I have been using to create stamps from my doodles!
    I was in need of more colours to use on my DIY stamps, so tried to find out how to make my own pigment ink. Lindsay The Frugal Crafter's video was extremely inspirational so do check it out for more information on the process I used to make the ink itself: • how_to_make_pigment_in... I wanted to make my ink pads from scratch, so I thought I'd try using an old eyeshadow palette and sponges. It worked a treat!

    This was a great DIY! I have a big jar of white acrylic on the way and glycerin and alcohol. Just very few stapms so far, but beginning. Watercolor is my first love but I want DIY mixed media supplies at the ready. I have so many eye shadows, blushes and cream pigments I am going to mix them together to get a permaneent "ink" Also gum arabic so many of my old things will become watercolors! Thanks!

    • @designsofluid8308
      @designsofluid8308  Před 7 lety +2

      That will be a great experiment - mixing the make-up pigments to make the colour supplies. Will you be making a video about it? For me it was a case of just using the containers rather than the make-up pigments. I wouldn't advise using acrylic - it can't be reactivated once dry, so your stamp pads will not stay moist. That's why I used gouache as it's basically a more pigmented version of watercolours.

    • @TerrieJohnson731
      @TerrieJohnson731 Před 7 lety +1

      Oh! I meant stamping textures with acrylic paint! I am getting alcohol dyes very soon,along with supplies for making my own gesso and texture paste. The experiments will go on top of that, and sealed with a fixative if needed. I wish, but I no longer make videos, my life changed and I am not set up for it. I am very much an avid CZcamsr anyway and comment to creators who really `maake me wow, or do something that really inspires

    • @designsofluid8308
      @designsofluid8308  Před 4 lety +1

      Glycerin helps dilute the paint and keep it moist and the alcohol helps it to dry once stamped onto something. At least, I think that was the logic I was going by...

    • @designsofluid8308
      @designsofluid8308  Před 4 lety

      Hi, it was rubbing alcohol, not glycerin. Zest-it would work (any substance that you use to blend colour pencils). Haven't tried any other solutions.

    • @monyscell8352
      @monyscell8352 Před 3 lety

      Actually,, according to the video you used both though it was just a couple of drops of the glycerin. The glycerin makes sense to keep the gouache from drying out. I'm curious about the makeup sponge - what kind did you use? I recently ran into trouble using a makeup sponge to blend some distress ink - there must be a reaction or something because instead of walnut stain I get a horrible shade of green, so I'm leery now and I'm not really familiar with the various kinds as I've always stuck with the same sponges and blenders. I thought makeup sponges were hydrophobic but a stamp pad is supposed to absorb the ink Tfs

      I am not sure - you will have to try! I don't think acrylic would work because it dries, so it needs to be paint that is pigmented and stays moist. Watercolours neat from a tube might work.

    • @designsofluid8308

      The glycerine can help stop watercolour paints from cracking too much when you pour them into pans. However, it's not always necessary. You have to experiment and see :)

      To make a stamp? It could work, but when dry the glue is shiny, so it won't hold the ink as well. The result might therefore be patchy.

    OK, but I need one that has fine lines, very fine, and just the lines print. Tried the carving type, and not even close to what I need. I need different stamps with loads of detail, and can't afford to buy that many, not with the detail I need anyway. My search goes on.

    • @designsofluid8308
      @designsofluid8308  Před 7 lety

      Hi Theo, I prefer to carve with a craft knife for details. You might like to try a reverse method though - why not attach something like smooth string or wire to a base, and then you are guaranteed that only the lines print? Or you could try drawing into clay and printing with it when dry? It depends what sort of design you want to achieve.
