I like how the instruction is basically "hold it like this and twirl it." Seems like it takes months of practice.
Sure does. Especially to that level. All off the stick tricks take a long time to master.
took me a week
took me 15 mins to learn to cut cards with one hand. this is probably similar. maybe you should do it then get back to us?

Tommy Lee for sure got me to stick twirl. It adds so much more flash for a drummer. Good trick to know even without a drum stick!

As a lefty, nearly all drumming techniques are backwards for me.. I.e. right is left & left is right, etc. So to do this trick with my left hand, do I spin the stick counterclockwise?

Doesn’t matter. Just what feels right. Some do it counter, some do it clock.
i can do it but my problem is that it goes upward and it loses control and goes flying.

I started learning this about 40 years ago after seeing the band Foreigner. And it took me some time to do this with my left hand 'forwards', and after a while i felt a little 'snap' between the index finger and middle finger of my left hand. So i can do it only clockwise and after seeing Mike Portnoy do it counter clockwise i am focussing on that.
i am a guitar player , i am not in to drums but i saw tommy lee do it so i tried it , its like learnig pinch harmonics for the first time
Ahahaha legit, I’m also confident there’s multiple ways to do it cos I see Tommy do it with 3 fingers and marching band players do the same, I’m pretty sure that removes the illusion so u can face anyway, I’m confident in this is the easy way ahaha
Hope this helps all who’s sticks started working their way up, eventually falling. Start with a smaller diameter circle (Clock rotation). Start small, and slow. If you are brand new to this as I am, and start making big circles, the stick will go upward even if you go slowly and with the other hand’s help. Small, slow circles. That worked for me.
Is the direction clockwise or anticlockwise?
@@mrc25381 for me it is clockwise. So if the palm of my hand is facing me, the sticks rotation is clockwise from the performer’s perspective.

really neat video . I enjoyed it and a good way to learn.
I do my own spin which i was able to do naturally like I never practiced it I just did it. But it uses all fingers well not really the pinky. & it’s a loop so you can just spin without stopping . Here the steps
1. Grab the stick with your thumb & index finger. Putting all other finger closed. The index finger will be on top of the the stick while your thumb is along side it. The reason you start from here is so the stick can have momentum you need momentum so the this stick can spin through your fingers.
2. Spin it (I assume you can spin it already) once it gets to between your middle & ring fingers. Stop there so now you can spin the stick from there.This part is really tricky because the stick is going to be spinning a certain way & you need to get the stick to spin the other way you do this by (refer to the “-“)(to practice from here in the actual spin all steps happen well happen without stopping between them) -to change the direction of the spin you need to bring you ring & pinky towards your thumb this will allow the stick to spin on top of your ring & pinky fingers.
3. This is the transition back to your index finger. Once the stick is done spinning on your ring & pinky use your thumb to guide the stick back to your index finger & then the stick will be on the side of your index finger that is closer to your thumb (this is basically where you start) once it’s there just repeat the process

Ha! I was trying this for ages and not getting it. Then I realized I'm left-handed and should be spinning it counter-clockwise and BOOM, I got it...
I figured it was be like twirling a baton and it would take practice after practice and a bunch of time to do it and i thank you very much for telling me how to do it because I really have been wondering how to do it.

I have been trying to do this for almost a year now - I've seen every tutorial CZcams has to offer on it. Pretty sure something must be wrong with my fingers - because the absolute best that I am able to do is make the stick go back and forth... Circular motions are absolutely impossible for me.

Nice but you explained that i had to spin it like a clock. Well the stick wont be in one spot everytime i spin it it moves up my fingers and i end up holding the end of the stick
