For Beetlejuice to become alive again, he has to marry someone, and because Lydia was the only person who wasn't scared of or hated him, he tried to convince her to marry him. She eventually came up with a plan that once they're married, she can kill him instantly, so he becomes "Recently Deceased." This would cause him to have to go to (and stay) in the Netherworld, thus banishing Beetlejuice.

Was he even banished though? I mean, Lydia stabbed him because he was going to kill everybody there in his ragefit and after that he had this change of heart. He stood up to his mother and left voluntarily. I'm still not sure why he left but he wasn't banished. He called up his clones and they carried him into the underworld, that was his choice.

It's not really a headcanon, it's kind of canon. BJ has never been attracted to Lydia because she's a kid. He's flirted with everyone in musical but her. He even said about three times that this is "A green card thing" and he only was doing it to be alive.

I mean, in the show, it's completely canon. BJ states that he isn't romantically attracted to Lydia, and that he just needs to get married to her so he can become alive again. That's it - there is no romance between him and Lydia, who he states as his friend, it's 'Just a green card type deal'.
However, the same can't be said for the movie. BJ and Lydia don't have the friendship that they develop in the show - they meet once before the wedding, where they have a conversation about death and how Lydia wants to be where BJ is, whilst he wants out. The next time they speak is during the exorcism of Adam and Barbara, where Beetlejuice states he can save them for her if she gets married to him.

Beetlejuice in the musical was not romantically interested in Lydia, evidence being “its a green card thing”, the obvious use of foil of his attraction to Adam and his relationship to Lydia, and the entire existence of this song. If you think it is, I don’t know what musical you’ve been watching. Also I’m aware Movie Beej has the same baseline objective but he doesn’t literally act in a sexual/inappropriate manner towards Lydia, which is why I consider him actual disgusting and pedophilic. I figured he was so worried about being abandoned and this was the only way he thought he could keep his best friend around. Plus the bonus of getting to live again. I think if it hadn't failed he'd probably have just tried to keep things the way they were (as besties).

Everything you people stated is true. I, for one, didn’t care much of the movie version of Beetlejuice because of the fact that he ONLY wanted to become free and USED Lydia to get that. The Musical’s depiction of him is the updated version I’ve been waiting for (minus the wedding and stabbing)! It would have been so great just to see Lydia and Beetlejuice just become besties and sing more songs like That Beautiful Sound and coexist like they do in the original show.

Unaware person just vibing until this song comes on. They blink once, twice. Song goes on, worry increases. They look down with their chin tilted 20° to their right, their face visibly saying "what the heck is going on here?". Heavily concerned for the female character but also curious, they finish out the song with terror, confusion, and hope that that the lyrics were just about a bad dream-they are not. They then scramble to find context 😌.

For anyone who needs explaining: The “Creepy Old Guy” is Beetlejuice. He was born dead, and needs to get married to become living. So, he is getting married to Lydia. Lydia is fooling him and making him think she is letting him become living and have fun, when in reality she is going to kill him after she marries him. All of the other people are in on this, as well. I’m a little rusty on the story, so correct me if I’m wrong.

for the people being confused or saying that they think bj isn't actually attracted to lydia -- he isn't. he's just doing it because he wants to go to the living world again. for that to happen, he needs to marry a living person, so he resorts to lydia. lydia runs away and her father chases after her, blah blah blah, lydia comes up with a plan. they tell him she actually wants to marry him, but he finds it very unbelievable. that's why the others start to tell him that they're actually attracted to him, and it works. they get married, bj lives, only to get stabbed by lydia again. he dies.

Nobody’s gonna hate you for stating the truth. They’ve never had a romantic relationship whatsoever, regardless of what some shipper say. This song is clear proof of that. He states twice in the show that “it’s a green card thing”. He flirts with everyone EXCEPT for Lydia during the entirety of the show. I know he comes off as much more of a pervert in the movie but that was part of his character, he’s meaner and much more self centered, he definitely didn’t care for Lydia in the movie at all. He does in the musical tho bc they drew inspiration from the cartoon where they’re shown to be best friends. Yes he does use her in the musical as well, but in the end he says “i think i’m gonna miss you most of all, scarecrow”. What you said is completely right, they’re relationship is platonic. People who ship them are completely out of their minds because Lydia is supposed to be 14-15 in all of these (movie, cartoon, musical), and you’re not wrong for not supporting p*dophilia.
