I'm in the deep south and the one good teacher here, only accepts young students. He doesn't have the patience to deal with adults that can be slow to learn.

I starting playing guitar when I was 20 and I have dabbled on and off for the last 30 years , when you have basically learned how to play the guitar by looking at tabs and learning songs you like , you don't really develop the vocabulary you are talking, so I find it like being stuck in China and trying to understand the people around me when I watch these kinds of vids . What I am hoping for is that if I stay tuned long enough I might actually pick up the language , but I am having a really hard time learning it as I have developed some terrible bad habits through out my journey to playing like a pro ! thanks for hopefully setting me in the right direction as I find as I get older I have more time to practice

I'm older than you judging by the pictures. And learning the fret notes is tough. More than a month on all of the notes on the first 3 frets. I can't recall them instantly, but it has been useful, and I think my playing is improving due to taking learning more seriously. Also I am figuring out more notes on some songs that I am learning, and also for instance was able to figure out without cheating, why c#-7 is a called that. I did see another tutorial where the teacher said that you don't necessarily think about the notes while playing. It's going to slow you down.

I was drinking while watching this and your vicious DUI comments were hurtful.
My tears aside, I learned the notes in a somewhat different way. 6th, 5th, and 1st were all learned the way you say in this video. That leaves 4th, 3rd, and 2nd string.
My teacher taught me the triads based off of the 4th and 3rd string - most commonly with the 7th and 6th which makes them triads no more, but that didn't stop us. For the 2nd string I did 2 string triads R on 2, 3rd and 5th on first string.
It took more work, but tying it in to a chord structure was definitely worth the effort. Add in some jazz (gasp!) charts where I followed along with my arpeggiating ways and I was locked in. And it helped with reading (gasp!) music. Yes, that is a lot of gasps.
Going back to my drinkin'. I'm going to try to expand on your line of thinking and applying 2 by 4's to the neck. Literally.

These are all tricks I use to navigate the neck. I'm working on a new idea which is learning C major patterns across the neck because they're all the natural notes and easier to remember as checkpoints. Playing leads is also good for getting an emotive memory of the neck, though it can lead to the problem that Ben describes of not knowing certain parts of the neck very well. Breaking that is a good "where do I go from here?" in your guitar mid-life doldrum!!

Great Video! I have watched a lot of "Memorize the Fretboard" Video's. This video is the best I have seen. Also - visualizing "The Little Neck" is a fantastic concept! It immediately removes the mystery of "I don't normally play way down here, and I don't really know what around these parts" I also found another video, that shows the "OCTAVE TRIANGLE", that really helped me with "String Skipping" (Another way of saying "I am learning where to go next" or MEMORIZE The Fretboard). "String Skipping" is important so your solo does not sound like a scale. Keep up the good work!
