An issue I have with a lot of Watch Mojo videos is that they seem to do the barest amount of research. They said the UK ‘only’ won 5 times. That maximum number of times any country has won is 7 (Ireland), and only one other country has won 6 times (Sweden). The UK has the record for most runner up places (16)

I seem to recall that Daz Sampson won a 'song for Europe' competition to be the UK's entry so why they describe it as 'baffling' is odd. It was the public's choice. These days of course the UK public doesn't get a say in the act and song that represents the country. It hasn't led to to the UK getting better results than when they did. From the snippet I heard when they announced it on the news, this year's entry is appalling. They'd be better just getting Sam Ryder to do it every year. He comes across as a nice guy who was well-liked by everyone at Eurovision, he's got a decent voice and some genuine talent, and clearly enjoyed the whole experience.

It's really not taken as seriously as you think, at least not in the UK. Graham Norton presents it and prior to him it was presented by another famous UK chat show host called Terry Wogan. Both spend/spent the entire show ridiculing it. Eurovision does have its hardcore following of course but it is also widely mocked.

You should realise that over the decades although some people in the UK LOVED the Eurovision Song Contest, many more thought it cheesy and, frankly, ridiculous. Top groups in the UK who sold millions and were popular throughout Europe would never have dreamed of singing in the contest as it was considered the height of UNcool. Though many in Europe appear to have taken it very seriously as a song contest.
As to "political voting", Greece & Cyprus always give each other's songs maximum points. And countries in the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzogovina etc) always vote for each other. Cynics in the UK used to say it was the best reason for the UK to break up - imagine if Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, The Chanel Islands, Isle of Man (last two might not be considered in UK but Europeans may think they are) were all in the contest and voted for each other every time...
More recently the Contest has had more followers in the UK. Last time it was won by Ukraine with the UK second. For obvious reasons the contest cannot be held at present in Ukraine so that country agreed it should be held in the UK but, fear not, Ukraine will be feted during the contest, and Russia & Belorus are not allowed to compete. Israel does and Australia has completed in a few recent competitions though my geography teacher would have pulled his hair out over that!

But that Embers song was just bad, you cannot blame political voting for getting 0 points 😂 UK makes it to the final automatically cause they're one of the big 5 countries that provide major funding for the event. If that song was sent by another country, it wouldn't have made it to the final and we would've been deprived of the 0 points moment 😅

The main function of Eurovision is to daily exchange TV news material with other countries. It is a network of stations at a time when it was just not possible to exchange moving images and sound as easily as it is today. The song contest was just an idea to extend the use of the network for entertainment and international understanding.

The revolving mirrors behind Sandie Shaw were so annoying that they were turned off at some point in the proceedings. As for Gemini's effort, the song started with bass and nothing else but they could hardly hear the bass so they could not get the pitch right. UK's entry for 2022, 'Spaceman', was pretty good, I think it should bump Buck's Fizz off the list, but it was not as good as Poland's entry last year, 'River', which makes me tingle.

In the US I always picture the 70s as the era of disco. In the UK it was the decade of strikes, flared jeans and a lot of brown.
Also people in the UK complain that we'll never do well in Eurovision because 'it's all political', but in my opinion it's just because we don't actually make that much of an effort. In 2021 my family were complaining about getting 0 points the next day, but then none of them could hum a bar of our entry because the song was very forgettable. We did well the year that we had Andrew Lloyd Weber composed a decent song and put loads of effort in with a big TV contest - we came 5th. And then there was last year. We came 2nd to Ukraine, because 1) Sam Ryder toured Europe and built loads of hype online, but most importantly because Space Man is an absolute banger! It was actually played on radio stations!
You can't blame the rest of Europe not wanting to vote for us if we put in a half arsed effort.

Eurovision was first broadcast in 1956 and involved just seven countries. That the UK has always had a place in the final ('though it didn't participate in the very first Contest) is down to the fact that the country was a founder member of the European Broadcasting Union so, no matter how c**p our entry, we must broadcast it each year and either squirm in embarrassment or simply revel in the awfulness of it all! Politics has consistently played a role with, for example, Greece always giving a high score to Cyprus and vice versa, while Malta and Ireland used to favor the UK and us them. Since Russia joined in the jamboree, things have become even more complicated and geopolitically determined.

    • @EmoBearRights
      @EmoBearRights Před rokem

It's not true actually - the Big 4 was founded in 1999 because of Germany. In 96 - they had a few systems to try and cope with the increasing amount of new countries that wanted to compete after the fall of the Berlin wall. So that year they decided to pre screen songs and one of the songs they rejected was Germany's (the Germans would have excluded anyway by previous criteria was to exclude the worst performing countries the previous year and Germany were last) but this not only felt unfair since Germany had always show up without fail but since they were one of the contest's biggest financial backers the contest struggled in that way that year despite the songs being good. The big four (now the big five since Italy's return with ironically the Italians never really needing the help of having that status) are the biggest financial contributers to the contest usually at least sends something a bit pants that will come last in the final although last year France was more a very creative experiment that didn't quite work live.

Connor, it's perhaps important to understand how divisive Eurovision Song is in the UK. It's indicative that the peak TV audience in the UK for 2022's Eurovision contest was 8.9 Million people - or about 12% of the UK population - so clearly, it's hardly the national obsession that the (very efficient) publicists for the event might have us believe. I know a few people who live for it and plan parties around it and glory in every detail and learn all the songs and talk about the costumes and analyze the voting in painful detail. But, I know a lot more people who view it as an anachronistic and lame survival from the days when international TV was still a novelty - but never watch it and some who even actively take steps to ensure they avoid everything to do with it.
Key message here There don't seem to be a lot of people in the UK who can take it or leave Eurvision - strong feelings both ways. It's Marmite TV.

The famous "You love it or you hate it". Same here.
There are two languages everybody speaks: music and sport. Someone said.
The big difference between those 2 things are: If I know my country will probably most certainly not win or reach the grand final, I can easily support another country. Most of the times I do support another country because I like their song most.
But it is unthinkable for me to be able to do the same in sport. I still can't watch the soccer/football final from 2010.
The only country I could support after we were out was Croatia. Because I really loved that team.

Ok idiots in chat if it's so political why is the most successful song in the last decade from Portugal - a place with one neighbour and no dispora - I e. There aren't large numbers of Portuguese people in other countries. If it's about Brexit why did Sam Ryder do so well last year when we actually made an effort. Sure there's some politics and huge cultural blocks but a country like Serbia doesn't rest on its laurels and has sent varied and some really could songs over the years. Austria which doesn't have any advantages is sending something experimental this year. Norway has never been part of the EU and yet consistently does well at the contest. You are not going to tell me that some rando voting in Georgia or Israel or Australia or Iceland gives a monkey's about Brexit or as Matt from ESC United says some housewife in the Netherlands.

Its always going to be political in some way because of the fact that it has televoting. But I find the British take the whole thing way too seriously/competitively and always go on about “we lost because its political hur dur” and cant seem to enjoy the fun aspect of listening to new songs.

The UK has suffered through tlhe last decade or so in Eurovision, not only because of bad choice of songs & artists, but in my opinion at least, because we have, rightly or wrongly, treated the contest as a bit of a joke, whereas the rest of Europe are very, almost obsessively serious about it. As a result of that & with neighbouring countries voting for each other, the Uk was always going to struggle!

I have to admit I have some sympathy with the joke thing, although I don't subscribe to it. I'm a singer/songwriter myself &, probably over-idealisticaly, believe song contests should be about the song & maybe the arrangement, but not about the set design, the lighting & general clowning about. Sorry if I stand alone in that.,

My preferred description for Eurovision is the ‘gay Olympics’. Whenever I’ve been, it’s felt like a large International Event (capitals important) in the host city. My favourite example was when Vienna hosted the 60th in 2015. They put a giant pride flag on the city hall (as a not subtle f-you to Putin), and turned - former Habsburg summer house into a temporary gay club (which was a bit surreal tbh)
