Maturing is realizing that there is more to a car than the 0-60, top speed, etc. This car was (and is) just plain fun to experience. For the 30 somethings out there, Savagegeese has a great video on the nostalgia of this car and what it meant to our generation then and now.

The golden era for Honda (and most Japanese brands). With so much being electronically controlled on cars nowadays, right down to the steering and throttle, there is a physical connection between driver and car that is lost. That's what makes older cars like this so appealing to drive. Cars have become too refined and numb. They are just not engaging to drive anymore.

My neighbor had this exact spec. Electron Blue is a true stunner. He was just 17, 18 at the time. I was 15, and only had my Learner's Permit. I wasn't into hot hatchbacks or JDM "pocket rockets" back then. My tastes were more big v8, detroit muscle cars. I had a '70 GTO in my garage that I'd work on with my father, and in my h/s Auto Tech class on the weekdays. The 90's Si's are a true gem, and even still today. I marvel at one driving down the road, and just hope the owners never let them go, or stop driving them as they were meant to be driven.
I also love and adore the early Lexus ES300's, just subtle, simple 90's/early 00's JDM design that just works! They weren't quick, but they certainly hold their own in terms of reliability while of course having that sense of Toyota longevity and roadworthiness if kept up with basic maintenance.

Drilled rotors on that car works great and applies the breaks better even on rainy days than those factory ones. High performamce all season tires are good recommended tires as well. It was a great ride in those days. Back then 160hp was fast.

If they made this today, i would be on line to buy one.. the new one is huge, and impossible to see out of.. it's just not as fun to drive. These were an absolute blast to drive, even without the additional HP (And weight) they were just amazing cars to toss around on the weekends, and relax in traffic during the week.. when that VTEC kicked in (Yo!) it really made you grin.. Something these new CVT, hybrid's just can't muster..

1999 was a cool year for car/truck buyers. Two(then) co-workers and myself all bought new vehicles that year. One guy bought a 1999 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner extra-cab, my department co-worker bought a Civic Si(in blue) and I bought a 2000 Nissan Frontier SE Crewcab 4 door. All three were new models introduced that year. I drove my co-worker's Si, was just a normal Civic until you hit 5000 rpms and "whoa" it was a delight to drive! Shame it didn't have ABS...

My first new car was a 2000 Black SiR, loved that car until someone plowed into it when it was parked on the street in its second year. I daily drove an electron blue pearl Civic Si just like this, only mine was a 2000 model (only difference being the '00's had baby seat attachment points on the shelf behind the rear seats). Bought mine in '08 at about 100k miles and sold it a decade later with another 100k on the clock for more than I paid for it. Was truly an excellent vehicle.
Mine had the stock wing but I later swapped trunks with a friend to go wingless. I put OEM fog lights, coilovers, header, Apexi N1 catback exhaust, Spec clutch, lightweight flywheel, cold air intake, high flow catalytic converter, and some other small but tasteful mods on it. Sounded great, not loud. Pulled hard and was very zippy. I street raced with it for years, and out of the 4 other EM1's, a DA integra, and a Del Sol that I raced (all of which equipped with B16's), I beat every one of them so I'm inclined to say mine was pretty healthy. The only B16 I lost to was a friend who had a blue EM1 like mine but had a B16B swap from the Type R model, but of course that was beyond simple bolt-on mods.
Car was super fun to drive even though I'm more of a RWD/drift/turbo dude (also have an SR20 swapped 240sx). Loved the short ratio gearing and the 5500 RPM crossover sound when it switched to the bigger cam lobes. Before I bought it, I test drove a buddy's '98 DX coupe for about a week, but the single cam engine was nowhere near as punchy and its gearing wasn't helping the fun factor.
My Civic was so faithful through multiple jobs and 2 college degrees that were over 4 hours away (made that drive so many times). Air conditioning always worked. Had 2 stereos stolen out of it, but neither were more than $100, and I was just thankful that the car didn't get stolen. The one problem the car ever gave me -- Several years into ownership, one warm spring day, the car wouldn't start. Starter would spin the engine over, but it would never fire. Turned out to be the ignition coil in the distributor. Was $10 and 5 minutes of my time to replace the coil.
Only reason I sold it was because I got into motocross towards the end of my 2nd degree and needed a pickup truck to haul my dirtbike, but had lots of student loans to pay back. If I had known how quickly I was gonna get out of debt, I would've kept the car. Wouldn't be surprised if I buy another one some day.

I was one of the first people in the Seattle metro area to test drive this car. Kirkland Honda received one in the Malano Red, I was on a list for an appointed test. At that time I owned a Del Sol in that same red color, funny thing is I was hit 5 times in this Del Sol, so red was definitely off the plate and the fact that Kirkland Honda want ed $25K , I was like “it’s still a Civic …,!, anyways I waited till July to get the EBP, that Renton Honda had just received, best car buying experience hands down! I loved that car, I had it repo’d twice, got it back, Moved to Sacramento, got stolen the first week at my dad’s place in South Sac, got it back thanks to Sac Sheriffs, then in 2007 (April 13th to be exact) it being paid off, it was stolen again, when CHP, called me 3 days later this was what they said “No burn, surgically stripped, no plates….the only thing left was the shell, they took everything.

@@christensafreeman1744 Man that sucks. I was always worried mine would get stolen. Fortunately car theft isn’t bad here in north Alabama, but it’s still concerning. The truck I replaced my EBP EM1 with is a ‘94 Toyota pickup Xtracab DLX 4x4 22RE manual, which is the ideal setup and also in high demand. Unfortunately they’re often stolen as well, so the concern is still there. This is what I have to deal with for preferring good 90s cars that have a lot of appeal.

In high school, my wife had a red 1996 Civic DX hatchback, but it had these wheels on it. Her stepdad bought them from a sketchy guy he met up with in the parking lot by Arrowhead Stadium. She had a nasty wreck in high school that deployed both airbags, but the insurance decided to repair it, and she kept driving it for several more years before giving it to her mom. We made a few trips from Southwest Florida to Kansas City and back in that thing. I have fond memories. Just one question: No ABS in 1999???

    • @lightspeedX2

    • @briantorres7339

ABS oddly wasn’t available on the Si in 99, but it was standard on EX sedans, optional on EX coupes and LX sedans. It should’ve been standard on the Si. I test drove a 2002 Civic EX coupe back in 02, with the ABS option, as the window sticker had the trim as EX with ABS and side airbags. It needed that ABS too. I was disappointed in the soggy brake feel of that generation of Civic.

If you had one of these and didn't have a garage or an alarm on it, your car wouldn't last a week. By the time you get your car back, everything is gone. Gutted with a empty shell.
