  • The Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo stands out as one of the premier resort golf experiences I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Nestled in the enchanting tropical haven of Costa Rica, this course effortlessly combines all the elements one seeks in a top-tier resort destination. Boasting breathtaking views, an imaginative layout, and a perfect balance of challenge and forgiveness, The Ocean Course should undoubtedly find its place on every golfer's resort bucket list.
Designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer and recognized as a top 100 world course by Golf Digest, this signature masterpiece weaves through lush jungle terrain, presenting golfers with dramatic elevation changes. Elevated tee boxes provide panoramic views of the Bay, Ocean, Jungle, Mountains, and islands, immersing players in a truly awe-inspiring setting. Despite its name, the Ocean Course doesn't hug the coastline, but the spectacular routing ensures you won't miss the ocean's presence, especially with views of the bay and ocean on most holes.
While not a walkable course due to occasional long stretches between holes, the unique challenges and stunning scenery make every step worthwhile. The fairways, though generous in places, often feature doglegs lined with dense trees, adding an element of risk and strategy to each shot. Water features, including ponds and creeks, come into play on several holes, enhancing the overall experience.
My favorite part of the course was the closing stretch from holes 14-18. Three short par 4s with enticing risk-reward opportunities lead to a nerve-wracking par 3 over a judge gorge on the 17th. The final hole, a captivating par 5, presents golfers with a strategic decision to either go for the green over a lake, lay up, or navigate around it. The backdrop of the bay and mountain range behind the 18th tee adds to the distraction of the stunning views. Particularly memorable were holes number 3, a short par 4 with a fairway encircling dense vegetation and a green fronted by bunkers, and number 6, a steep downhill dogleg left with dense jungle along the left side and one of the best-framed views of the Bay behind the green.
Undoubtedly, The Ocean Course stands as the crown jewel of golf in Costa Rica and ranks among the finest courses south of the USA. Accessible to the public, the course requires a stay at the Four Seasons or Andaz on Peninsula Papagayo or playing with a member. Costa Rica, once an under-the-radar golf destination, proved to be an excellent choice for a family trip. The country is inviting, overwhelmingly beautiful, and serene. During our stay at the Andaz, we enjoyed activities such as hiking and barista classes. My wife relished the spa services, and both the Andaz and the Four Seasons impressed us with their delectable cuisine. I wholeheartedly recommend a golf getaway to Costa Rica, especially if you've already explored Mexico and the Caribbean.

Great review man. Beautiful course. Is it open to the public for tee times? I'll be staying at Secrets Papaygo late July & was hoping to play this course. Thanks
