Ahaaa! How hilarious about that Yiddish!! Yeah, and me with a huge Southern accent. There is no telling what I sound like to some people speaking English. I have done business in foreign countries just fine, but I talked to a woman on the phone in IOWA! recently and she told me she could not understand me - like I speak a foreign language.
It’s 2022, and I’m falling out of my chair laughing. EVERY SECOND of this routine is spectacularly perfect. This goes way beyond “comedy”. There isn’t one word to cover it.

Now I want to learn to fake speak in different languages. This is so entertaining. I am going to practice my accents just to do this at parties. This is too damn amazing. RIP Sid Caesar. You were the greatest.
I had a client who tried to ask directions in Houston tell me to "let him handle it." He rolled down the car window and asked a man, "Señor, where is El Hotelo?" I looked at him like he was crazy. In the same town where I went college, was the state mental hospital. Outpatients were blended with the students and there was a man who did languages like Sid Cesar, almost better than he. His Japanese was amazing!
My only problem is trying not to miss anything while wiping away the tears from laughing so hard. What an incredible gift of joy to mankind. Thank you for letting me see this!!!
He was the absolute master at speaking dialects. A remarkable talent and in addition he was also of genius at sketch comedy. He was a favorite of my dad who remarked that when Sid was out of character and just being interviewed he seemed uncomfortable and would stumble occasionally during speaking. So odd for a man blessed with such performance gifts.
it took me 2 seconds to understand it was gibberish and im french. The only french words are "merci, merci beaucoup" at the begining. So you dont know what you are talking about moron.
Vape Conscient I could believe that under certain conditions a person could be fooled for a short while, for example if there is a lot of background noise or in a room where there is a lot of echo. I recall going to see a Monty Python movie once in a room that had terrible reverberation time. Even though I have lived in England and I know the entire movie practically by heart, I still couldn't understand a friggin' thing because of the combination of echo and accents. I knew they were speaking English but that was about all. I also recall reading a chapter in Richard Feynman's autobiography where he lied and told a friend that he could speak Chinese so the friend introduced him to someone who really could speak. The woman he was being introduced to greeted him in Chinese and Feynman, thinking he was going to be exposed, answered in gibberish. The woman was dismayed because she spoke Mandarin and she thought Feynman was speaking Cantonese. Feynman also did similar stunts in gibberish Italian. In both cases he didn't have to speak for long but under the right conditions, a native speaker might think that he was speaking their language but maybe with a thick foreign accent.
It wouldn't surprise me if he was a musician as well. If he had such an ear as to discern all the various intonations and articulation of these languages, he must've certainly been able to do well in music.
@Atreus21 - He does. He plays piano because, when I was a kid, I saw him walk out onstage, put music up onto a piano and start playing music that was very staccato and sounding like Asian music. Then, he looks at the music from about an inch away, turns it around, as if upside down and plays something that sounds like a waltz. It is hilarious!
Many years ago (around 1946) Sid Caesar was in a movie called Tars and Spars, about men and women in the Coast Guard. In it, he did his version of a wartime airplane movie called "Wings over Bermerschnitzen" I stayed for the secodmd showing and went back the next night in order to memorize that bit. Today 68 years later I still can do it. When I first learned it, whenever two or more people were gathered for any reason, there I was in their midst doing it. I have always loved Sid and about 12 years ago a mutual friend introduced me to him. Other than my marriage and the births of my five kids, that was the high point of my life. I miss you Sid.
I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes, I am German and my husband is Italian but the best part was the japanese , Cid Caesar you were the best comic ever RIP!
For me the real genius of this was in the gestures much more than in the speech. I thought the French was by far the best of them all. I could only wish the editor of the clip let us see more of Caesar and didn’t waste so much footage on reaction shots. We didn’t need to be told how funny it is.
@Michaël Janson - Often, I have been completely confused by Portuguese. Sort of Spanish, Italian and a little French ... blows my mind until I remember.
As an Italian, it sounds like some sort of Italian conversation that I can't totally understand because I'm maybe not focused enough or close enough. The cadence and the rhythm are impressive.

worked with character actor John Sebastian in the sixties, veteran of Yiddish theatre, he dumbfounded waiter in fancy French restaurant if Beverly Hills with same double speak as Sid's
I am fluent in two languages, and stumble about with two others. Judging from Sid's use of many legitimate foreign words in his language skits, (Japanese excluded), I'd wager that he could speak at least German & French at some acceptable level of fluency. Especially German, as his childhood would have certainly included Yiddish, which many consider a German dialect. In any case, his entertainment genius can never be doubted, and I think eons must pass before any equal emerges with his specific and extraordinary talents.
Actually, Sid admitted that he had no fluency of any kind in any foreign language. Evidently, he was just very good at capturing the essential auditory character and some of the phonemes of the languages he mimicked. And that was only a small part of his immense talent. In my view, he was a comedic genius.
I love this. If you search for Sid Caesar Quora on Google then you can see why I think the ability to do as Sid did is a short-cut to foreign language proficiency.
For anyone who wants to see another amazing performer who also does double talk check out Reggie Watts, he's definitely one of the most unique people on the planet for sure Reggie Watts disorients you in the most entertaining way
I just finished reading an autobiog by Mel Brooks. He has a lot about Caesar All these writers and comedians were great: Brooks, Caesar, Carl Reiner and for all the flaws, Woody Allen
MrTree1779 is basically correct, but it is still funny even for native speakers. In the French part it seems to me there is a hint of Yiddish from time to time
Sid Caesar was the only man I ever saw who could speak Yiddish in French.
Sis C was the only man I ever heard who could mix French with Yiddish. ;-)
Billy West was the only performer I ever heard who spoke black Yiddish.
I used to speak a mix of Telegu and English in French and my Hindi GF hated it!!

Yes, he was, and it was a tremendous treat to hear him with Carl Reiner in a skit....they could go on and on with this talk...amazing!
One of the absolute greatest of all time. Calling him a genius almost doesn't seem good enough!!.......RIP Sid.
222psb222 , Agree such a funny man 👏
Drop the "One of"
Just my opinion, but Early Television had two geniuses: Sid Caesar and Ernie Kovacs.
My only problem is trying not to miss anything while wiping away the tears from laughing so hard. What an incredible gift of joy to mankind. Thank you for letting me see this!!!
he got funnier as he got older...comedy is one of the few professions where aging looks are a plus.
RIP Sid Caesar. 91 years is a great life!
It doesn't get any better than this, awesome talent!
What a legend. Very few words and phrases are "real" and make sense but you'd never know it. Such a talent. You believe every word haha
This is Sid Caesar's double talk for which he was famous. He doesn't speak any of these languages--it's nonsense except for a word here and there.
+Gina Luciano That for is so great and funny !
Bob Hope squeezed in in every language!
He was the absolute master at speaking dialects. A remarkable talent and in addition he was also of genius at sketch comedy. He was a favorite of my dad who remarked that when Sid was out of character and just being interviewed he seemed uncomfortable and would stumble occasionally during speaking. Genius...he isn't saying ANYTHING in this video...but he sounds so convincing.
RIP.
I didn't figure it out until the last segment. Absolute genius.
Actually, in four dialects of Gibberish.
Not sure there are four dialects, though.
all of it gibberish. He did it so well even native speakers believed he spoke the language but figured they just couldn't understand his dialect.
it took me 2 seconds to understand it was gibberish and im french. The only french words are "merci, merci beaucoup" at the begining. So you dont know what you are talking about moron.
It's a comedy sketch relax

"Wings over Bomberschnizel, or Bombs over Weinerschnitzel" was on his "SHow of Shows" in the 1950s.
Rip Sid Caesar. Great comedian. The Japanese part kills me. 😅😂🤣. Lmao

The man was an absolute genius. "Show of Shows" was the best.
I loved watching him when I was a kid he was so funny he's one of my favorites. And he and I have matching moles : ) 👏
lol

Wonderful days gone by with the great Sid Caesar...Always enjoyed him in the Show of Shows.
Much missed. Now this is a comedy genius .Rest easy,Mr Caesar. much thanks for all the laughs.
French part sounds French, German part sounds German, and the Italian part sounds like a strong Neapolitan dialect!
@Michaël Janson - Often, I have been completely confused by Portuguese. Sort of Spanish, Italian and a little French ... blows my mind until I remember.
I’ve lived in Japan for 23 years and could pretty much understand every single word he said on the last bit
even the gestures and facial expressions are spot on.
I'm French
That sound like french, but there is not 1 word of french :)
The ARE French words, at the beginning of quite a few sentences.
... and in the middle of quite a few others ... ;-)
That's the point lol
Camera panned to the single Asian in the crowd at 4:20 lol
He was 'one of a kind' and truly gifted in making people laugh. Not everyone has this gift. He will be missed!
Not by me.
Stinking brilliant. We need that kind of funny to come back in style. So very much we need it.
Amazing‼️
Absolute legend. What a talent
Rest in Peace wonderful Man
The Italian was fluent, every gesticulation was clear and in the right context.
Best sitcom ever ….
As an Italian, it sounds like some sort of Italian conversation that I can't totally understand because I'm maybe not focused enough or close enough. The cadence and the rhythm are impressive.
Genius. This is such an unusual skill.
Always with the "Bob Hope!"
The incredible amazing SID CAESAR!

his character change is amazing aswell.

Sheer genius...he spoke gibberish with such style and confidence...pity he never starred in movies...
I love this. If you search for Sid Caesar Quora on Google then you can see why I think the ability to do as Sid did is a short-cut to foreign language proficiency.
He is brilliant!

Heavens to Prof. Irwin Corey!

I might pay any amount of money to instantly understand the languages this man does.
Simply the most talent entertainer of his type. His fake accents are so believable.
MrTree1779 is basically correct, but it is still funny even for native speakers. In the French part it seems to me there is a hint of Yiddish from time to time
Hail Caesar! We salute this genius of comedy.
He did host Saturday Night Live. SNL Season 8, Episode 12 on February 5, 1983 with host Sid Caesar and musical guest Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes.

There was, indeed, a better time in America with many "greats". Sid was Caesar at one time in the comedic world.
his french sounded good. the german and italian i didn't understand a word!
Comedy routine without the need to understand a single word...
Some of the words in the French section were actually French (e.g. regarde)
0:27 predicted Timothy Chalamée
thats so clever and funny!
Who was that they kept showing in closeup as he was dying with laughter?
+MaskedMan66 Looks a bit like Carl Reiner, but I can't be sure.
