  • On July 4th, 2005 I had the opportunity to ride in the cab of one of the Strasburg Raliroad steam engines. Over the next couple of months I went back several times and got more video to make this video. Hope you enjoy! Special thanks to Kurt Bell for his assistance.

I know Kurt Bell. He’s a member of the “Fans of the Strasburg Railroad” Facebook page. I’ve come across quite a few posts from him. I didn’t know he was the narrating conductor. He’s probably too busy these days with his job I don’t come across many posts on the Facebook group anymore. He was quite frequent once. But being a conductor narrator is a busy job. I hope he narrates my ride when I come soon.

The 475 engine was seen in the Thomas and the Magic Railroad movie.

Locomotive #475 toots that deep sounding whistle today. At first I didn’t like it because it reminds me of the whistles on the steamboats. But I’ve been informed it’s original to the former Norfolk and Western Railroad. So I like it now. Pure N&W history preserved on the historic Strasburg Railroad. I’m sure when 475 was in service with the N&W she probably traveled through foggy conditions. And that whistle as I describe in sound is like a foghorn. Good to have on foggy tracks. I hope to come to Strasburg Railroad soon. However locomotive #90 is my favorite. But I have nothing against 475 and 89. There also great engines. But 90 is my favorite because I saw her in some movies and she’s the largest on the Strasburg Railroad being a 2-10-0 Decopod. 475 is an M class 4-8-0. And 89 is a 2-6-0 Mogul. 89 is the only locomotive on this line built in Canada. 475 and 90 were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia PA. I love Baldwin built steam engines.

Not really. 475 wasn’t built with the headlight in the center
