    It seems that Master makes a quality product in terms of structure, (tough under fire), and physical quality. Now if they could apply that to the security aspect of their locks, they might gain some respect from the picking community. I'm not expecting that any time soon since they, despite their lack of security, seem to sell a *lot* of locks to the uninformed public.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  Před 7 lety +131

      +Mark England Master lock seems to be a company of extremes. Some of their products are really really bad, and some of their products are comparable to those that are put out by abus. I also have some sympathy for the fact that the public at large expects really really good products really really low prices. Both of those expectations can't be met. Any company making commercial locks is between a rock and a hard place.

    • @markleng67
      @markleng67 Před 7 lety +10

      Definitely agree. I think that a single security pin would elevate the security aspect of their locks by a point or two. If I were an actuary for Master I would think that the cost/benefit ratio would be in line with increased profit. Just my opinion, good vid as always!

    LPL's videos have made me realize that no lock is %100 secure but that doesn't make it worthless. This lock is a good example. Just because a very skilled lockpick opened it very quickly in a controlled environment doesn't mean it doesn't have some deterrent value in the real world. In the real world there are a lot of other factors to consider...
    1) Not many people have these skills.
    2) What is the value of the item I'm trying to steal? Is it worth me even trying if I might go to jail?
    3) Are there witnesses around? Are they going to notice me suspiciously messing around with a bike lock for a minute or two and start asking questions? Is there a hidden camera filming me, giving them a nice long 2 minute look at me?
    4) How is the lock situated? Is it positioned so that I can use my lockpicking skills easily? Or is there a sign, wall, piece of bike frame, etc. in the way that makes it a lot more difficult to pick than it was in the comfort of my home?
    5) Okay, I've picked the lock, now what? I can't start the bike. Okay, me and my buddy will real quick roll it up this ramp into the back of a U-haul. Oh crap, it's got a wheel lock too! I guess I'll need to have 4 buddies so we can lift it into the U-Haul.
    Etc. etc.
    Seems like the main security feature of a lock like this is to deter a quick and dirty theft. Somebody coming up with bolt-cutters or something and then, with accomplices, hauling it away before anybody notices or reacts. If I owned a $60,000 bike I might not use this but I think it would be fine for less valuable bikes, like say in the $3500 range.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  Před 7 lety +5

      Perhaps, but a couple notes: First, I don't know of a 10 pin tubular lock impressioning tool. Second, there are FAR easier ways of preventing impressioning (i.e., use different length driver pins and/or different strength springs). Third, the dummy pins would not stop an impressioning tool from working. I can't really think of a logical reason for them.

    I've use the Masterlock CuffLock on my bike for almost 20 years. I lock it in town at various places, some places are dark some are lit. The thing about thieves is that they are opportunists and don't really want to spend more than a couple of minutes fiddling with a lock. Even though it took the LPL just a few minutes, a thief would not spend that kind of time. Plus, since the CuffLock isn't common, just the sight of it would make a bike thief hesitate.
