    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +2

      Probably very different. The cast would have altered [for example Patrick MacNee did the film to work with Roger so he wouldn't be in it] and the tone would have to change. It appears Brosnan was the back up if Roger had turned this down and the tone would have suited him more [even if I think he'd have been a bit 'green' at this stage].

      James Bond, of course, can’t be killed. But Timothy Dalton would have died of embarrassment, especially jumping into bed with Grace Jones!

  • @bonghunezhou5051
    @bonghunezhou5051 Před rokem +22

    It is worth noting that while the producers and casting agents cast relatively older henchmen - evidently to credibly match against Moore and, for that matter, Macnee - they did not do so for the, um, companions of Moore, thus accentuating the visibly advanced age of him.

    • @jamesatkinsonja

      I think Roger would have preferred that as he said he found doing love scenes with woman young enough to be his daughter quite uncomfortable in FYEO and View [Maud Adams was 18 years younger but a good friend of his so he felt more relaxed].

      Society has open up slightly to the idea of an older action hero. These days it more common with films like The Expendables or TV series such as Walker Texas Ranger. Liam Neeson broke the mode on age with the Taken film series. Keanu Reeves began the John Wick series at 50 and like Tom Cruise, he is close to 60. There's more representation and possibilities for mature action stars.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před rokem +12

      People are ageing slower now. 57 did seem ancient in the 80's, but Craig doesn't look close to that age. The perception of elderly has moved. It's insane to think Keanu is nearly 60, you wouldn't write him off because he still looks like a boy.

    • @NickTheStallion
      @NickTheStallion Před rokem +4

      Hell yeah! Brosnan aged really well too, he was in some action flicks over the last years and would be great to see at least one more Bond film with him, one in the style of Never Say Never Again, that shows that James Bond is now old, but, proves that he is still able to save the world.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci

      Roger himself was quite critical ['I was about 400 years too old for the part!']. Roger wasn't doing most of the stunts even early in his run in contrast to Cruise and Keanu Reeves who do there own stunts. I think there more open into writing the character at the actors age rather than pretending there still a younger man [like Bond in NTTD] and playing with that more [Top Gun Maverick has Maverick reunited with his old flame rather than a much younger woman as in this film].

    Roger Moore’s age in A View To A Kill doesn't bother me as much as most people nor does his obvious stunt doubles. I don't know why it bothers most people I guess I just don't pay attention to those things or I'm just a big Moore fan (he is my favourite Bond) so I'm more forgiving of it

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před rokem

      As my favourite out of the first three I saw in quick succession (FYEO, Octopussy being the others), it made the 9 year old me want to be James Bond and do what he did, so it never had a gross effect on me of thinking that old man's so off-putting. And that's the largest gap in age there's even been between me seeing Roger Moore as Bond and my age.

    • @jamesthornton3539

I was surprised by it actually.

      Roger himself was quite vocal about him being too old ['I was about 400 years too old for the part! as he once joked] and not being comfortable about how young the woman were in the film [he didn't get on with Grace Jones either]. Calvin made a great point in the 'full review' that the stunt doubles were much better handled in Octopussy and I feel that film would have been a better finish for him [Moore said 'View' was his least fav of his Bond on the commentary].

    Look at Harrison Ford. Look at Ian McKellen. Look at Patrick Stewart. Look at Christopher Lee. Look at Charles Dance. All acting/acted up until their twilight years and still major box office draws. Age is irrelevant. What does matter however is EXECUTION - and I maintain that ''A View To A Kill's'' was terrible. They seemed to be ignoring Moore's age as opposed to embracing it. An aged James Bond fighting a younger man in a digital world (by 80s standards) should have been a blast. They were just too scared to break formula and it cost them.

      Bond being more of a mentor/older+ wiser voice to Melina for most of FYEO [and turning Bibi down] felt like a rare concession to Moore's age as did Connery saying he'd been restricted to 'teaching not doing' at the start of NSNA but it's only fleeting and I agree trying to ignore it here was a bad idea rather than embracing it.

    Although a couple of films before his final role, I think the Cary Grant comparison would be more apt if we consider Charade rather than Walk Don't Run, a film where he very much plays into the idea of 'I'm too old to be sleeping with young women' only for Audrey Hepburn's character to be the one who ends up pursuing a relationship with him. It really makes the relationship feel far less frivolous when they get together at the end of the film. Could have been an interesting route for A View to a Kill to have gone down, rather than seemingly trying to pretend Moore was still the same age he was in Live and Let Die.

    Interesting fact: Roger Moore had two sexual relationship with black woman. First time in the first movie(LALD 1973, Rosie Carver) and second time in the last movie(AVTAK 1985, May Day). *** Now, I must say I really-really like AVTAK(1985)! Not so much in the past, but now I really appreciate this movie! Probably the most nostalgic Bond movie ever! Not the best, but very nostalgic! It's sooooooo 1985! I was 12 years old! And I remember loving both movies: AVTAK(1985) and TLD(1987)! So, the more serious approach of Timothy Dalton/TLD was not a problem for me. Actually, AVTAK was quite serious too. Much more serious than TSWLM(1977) and Moonraker(1979)! By the way, I adore TSWLM and Moonraker! The absolute highlight of Roger Moore! I think he was really great in the last five movies(1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985.)! What a charming English gentleman agent even at the age of 57! *** ATTENTION!!! Does anyone know when Tanya Roberts was actually born? Some say 15 October 1955 and some say 15 October 1949... Same with Timothy Dalton: 21 March 1946 or 21 March 1944... I've kinda learnt something from all your reaction videos. Its great I think that rather than us all being crazy and angry at a film like we all were back in the day, we've learnt to try and understand why a film is the way it is and not for what its not. AVTAK was very beloved from my family and 4 older brothers because it was the only Bond movie we had recorded on VHS back in the late 80's and early 90's because official VHS tapes were expensive and scarce in North Cymru (Wales) so you were stuck with what you had. This film particularly does have a cult following and their enjoyment of the film will never go away! many I know have the Zorin logo as a T shirt :)
    1:59 haha thats interesting because I knew almost no one who liked Dalton or his movies (particulary LTK) back in the day!!!

Ive learnt alot from you to re appreciate the surreal and whacky side of Bond movies again and enjoy Die Another Day as is :) So lets all us Bond fans not be an UZI machine gunning Mad Max Zorin and put aside our Bond Fan Police badge and celebrate our personal favourites and AVTAK over some Quiche, Red Wine and Cheese and Crackers ;) All the best Chap

    David Bowie and Sting were approached to play Zorin, and Grace Jones was cast to appeal to 'the kids'. Duran Duran hired to do the song. Do you think that maybe this explains the weird choices in the film, attempts by an older crew to reach a market a generation or more behind them?

      I do wonder if Eon saw Fatima Blush in 'Never Say Never Again' [for which the actress got a Golden Globe nomination] and thought 'were having some of that with the May Day character!
      You make a good point-there seems to be a push to attract a younger market when you've got an older Bond and crew which is a strange mix [I know Bond in the 80's struggled at times, particularly in the USA]. I get a similar vibe to Die Another Day which is very '2000' in style but has Brosnan who was nearing 50 as the lead.

      @@jamesatkinsonja I believe so. And so much so they revived her for Xena! Barbara Carrera was also apparently offered the part of Octopussy, so EON must have liked her style. There is a bit of culture shock and even mid life crisis going on in View To. And I love it. Grace Jones was genuinely cast to attract children to the franchise, which is hilarious.

      Similar to Christmas Jones, I don't think her character is well written so any actress would have struggled. It's not helped that Roger and her apparently didn't get along [he said he felt uncomfortable that he was older than her mother for example] so there isn't much chemistry.

    To truly understand A View to a Kill, one must put oneself back in 1984, when MTV and music videos were at the apogee of that pop phenomenon. It was a time when Madonna became a superstar, when Michael Jackson was bigger than anyone, when Bruce Springsteen peaked, and bands like Duran Duran were the hippest thing around. This was the era of Prince, Live Aid, Bananarama, Max Headroom, mullet haircuts, Miami Vice, ...the mid-80s was a really bright, explosive, colorful Pop culture time. If you were a teenager in the 80s, you instinctively get View to a Kill immediately and probably have always been a fan. But for those who weren't dying their hair in the 80s, watching MTV round the clock, wearing those rubber bangle bracelets, View to a Kill doesn't resonate with you. Just the idea to cast David Bowie and Grace Jones literally screams MTV generation and 1984. You have to see this film through that lens. View to a Kill was super hip, cool and trendy when it was released in the summer of 1985 (or at least it very much tried to be). I embrace this film and always have. There are so many worse Bond films than View. At least A View to a Kill doesn't kill Bond at the end of the movie. Nuff said.

    I love A View to a Kill with every bit of my soul but it is as close to an actual guilty pleasures as Bond ever got. I have to say that the latest Indiana Jones film gave me a whole new (serious) level of appreciation for it though: whereas Indy V to me felt dragged down by self-seriousness and self-consciousness over the age of its protagonist, AVTAK tried to make up for it by embracing the whole wackiness of the thing, hence the casting of Walken and Grace Jones. It’s especially apparent during both films’ final act, which are very similar - except that it’s Indiana Jones trapped in the Heinkel and in need of rescue, and not the girl… Modern Hollywood gotta Modern Hollywood, I guess.

    Funnily enough this film is one I come back to periodically, once you reset your expectations there is more of a guilty pleasure to be had (of course there is room for a 'James Bond on the verge of retirement' film to be done and this is not it, and it hasn't really been done, though perhaps 'For Your Eyes Only' is the closest so far in the franchise?).

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 9 měsíci

      The recent 'No Time To Die' was a full blown 'Bond out of retirement' story and 'Skyfall' had Bond dealing with his age as a theme but of course they were made in a very different era to the Moore films. I agree FYEO did attempt to acknowledge his age more than his two subsequent films.

    First Bond film I saw in a theater. Some of Calvin's comments are word for word what I remember Siskel and Ebert saying about the film when it debuted. I'll say that Roger Moore looked much better at 57 than I did at 57 (now 59). I've read Roger Moore actually wanted to do The Living Daylights at the last minute because he disliked the way AVTAK turned out and wanted to end his Bond career with a better film. I like the film itself and have a soft spot for Bond film where much of the action occurs in the U.S.

    • @sashaking1115
      @sashaking1115 Před rokem +3

      I’m not sure that’s true. I thought Roger decided to end with AVTAK because he didn’t want to do an eighth one. AVTAK was his least favourite of his Bond films, though.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci

      Roger had no interest in doing another one [he seemed regret doing this one in hindsight]-Allegedly Cubby called him to say it was over and he replied 'I agree, it's time'. He takes time in his autobiography to say he knew 'View' was the last one as another book had said he was unwillingly fired from the role and he wanted to set the record straight.

    I saw this one at the cinema with my dad when i was 16 and I just feel that this was one Roger Moore Bond too many - if this had been cast with Timothy Dalton we might have had something to write home about - obviously we would have had to get rid of Tanya Roberts but I'm sure we could have found someone with a little more spark (Fiona Fullerton might have been better placed for this rather than the bit part she actually gets)! Don't get me wrong I love the Avengers and The Saint, but not in the same movie and not having to suspend my disbelief so much that I could honestly believe that Britain's security rests in such 'doddering' hands!

  • @JeremiahEcks777
    @JeremiahEcks777 Před rokem +1

    I've always loved A View to a Kill and found it one of the most underrated Bonds. Like Modern Day Calvin would state, I'd find the movie a lot better if Bond's age was part of the story instead of ignored; that you contrast the sharpness of the 80's via technology and the popularity of Grace Jones and Walken, against the outdated older Moore, and then you have Tanya's romance become paternal... it would work.
    But how much is awesome? Moore always commits to his version of Bond. May Day is memorable and her face turn is handled well. McNee is charming. The fight on the bridge is great. Walken is one of the best villains EVER. And the theme tune and Maurice Binder video is legendary.
    Ultimately there's so much good to it.

    It's an oddball film with a lot of charm. The first half has Moore behaving like a wooden puppet, as if he's got stage fright; then he opens up in the second half and goes for broke. The film veers off on various tangents which I think are quite endearing. The vehicle chase in which Bond's car gets progressively reduced by halves is ridiculous. There are plenty of horsey shenanigans. The scene in which the stable converts into a laboratory is mind boggling and I found Patrick McNee's death genuinely upsetting. Christopher Walken is astonishing - when he's on the screen, I can't take my eyes off him. Plus, he has personality. Of all the Bond villains, I thought his character was the most terrifying, especially when he opened fire on his own employees. Oh, and there is a great title song from the brilliant Duran Duran. What's not to like?

I don't really focus on Moore's age, although it's quite apparent when he's fighting or making love that he's too old to be doing such things. The villains are very memorable and do a good job of being properly menacing... Let's not talk about the Bond girl...

    I notice your chat with David recently, smells like Bond book talk, so here is the next part of the story:
    [Scene 2]
    Down in a London tube station, the black rats fight over crumbs between the abandoned and rusting tracks. A strong smell of coal dust and oil fumes pervades. Images of yesteryear adorn the walls like ghosts haunting the spirit of the living. The atmosphere is clammy, dusty and dark, with a stiff draught from the tunnel. Footsteps echo. Shadows flicker along the damp crumbling walls. Things begin to grow brighter as Fleming turns from the old platform into the ticket office, which leads to a passages beyond. Opening a door, a similarly dusty old secretary sits busily typing, while also listening to the wireless on her bakelite headphones. She tips him a side glance and a nod. Fleming throws his hat and slightly smouldering coat over to a wooden stand, and knocks on M's door.
    Sir Miles Messervy sits behind a red leather-topped solid wooden desk, surrounded by folders and dossiers, most of which show signs of being charred. He is a weather-beaten old man, grey from too many years of fighting fires in Whitehall. "Look here Fleming. What do you know about Turkey?". "The feathered kind, sir, or the Ottoman depraved sun-baked arid desert that passes for Asia Minor, sir?". "The Latter". "Well... I can speak fluent Arabic." "Good! We'll be sending you under cover as a merchant banker who is interested in buying Gold. Heinz Munchen, the head of German Military Exports, is shipping a crate of Nazi war bullion to his contact in Istanbul. We don't know who the contact is, so it's your job to find out, and replace him. The Turks are still smarting from Gallipoli, so you can't afford to make any friends. Do you understand?". "Yes sir." "I'll be honest with you... You're the seventh man we've had to send in on this mission, the others weren't fortunate enough to live long enough to find out any information. You're code will be SIS agent 007. Due to certain number of, shall we say, security risks, you'll also be using a code name as well. Given you'll be posing as a man in charge of stocks and bonds, we thought how about Mr. Bond? Is that all right?" "Bond?", he raises an eyebrow, "Very well, sir." "Splendid. Now go down to see the lab team. They'll give you your disguise, and a handful of technology gizmos we thing you might find useful." [Video Game Version: A quicktime event with witty comments, do not screw up the conversation with M]
