    Is Warcry Underrated, or is it just the best fantasy skirmish game made by Games Workshop? Peachy goes on a deep dive into why he thinks just that, all whilst painting a Corvus Cabal.

      Such a tenuous excuse to squeeze in an advert. One of the (many!) things I've appreciated about The Painting Phase has been its honesty. It's so sad to see that being sold off. Please don't become yet another of those low quality desperate hobby channels.

    You guys should do a Warcry campaign along side the Necromunda one, or instead of it, because I feel the rule system in Warcry would make it much easier for Peachy to run it as there isn’t so many rules to remember. And the system would also lead to shorter videos for the episodes of the campaign.

    Warcry is one of my favourite games. You can just draw into loss because of the random combos but if you approach it from the right attitude it can be very liberating. We then played Necromunda, which she thoroughly enjoyed, but didn't have the time or patience to do all the "admin" that comes with it, so, I took a punt and bought Warcry.... and what a great decision that was!! Now we own 6 warbands, tons of scenary, and friends and family who would have NEVER tried wargaming have had a go and loved it. Excellent game with excellent minis.

    I played Warcry during it's first Edition and I really liked esp. because of the alternating Activations system and the simplicity of the rules, beside the handy Battlecard deck, where you draw together your scenario and Victory conditions etc. But it felt a bit unbalanced and swingy bc of the different warbands and their rules and abilities. The amount of books you need(ed) put me off finally. I've switched to One Page Rules and their kind of equivalent called Age of Fantasy Skirmish. The rules are free and simple as Warcry incl. alternating Activations and you can use whatever models you like for it. It plays really fast and feels a lot more balanced. There are even campaign rules for it which are also free! I highly recommend to try out One Page Rules 😊

    i watched a few warcry battle reports and it looked really fun, it kind of clicked right away, i could tell what was happening and it felt like the game, the objectives and what they were intending to do to complete the objectives was very clear. as someone who paints models but hasnt rly played the games since the early 90s all the other games systems ive tried to watch the mechanical numbers, dice rolls etc swamp out the game itself. it becomes 80% rolling dice, we roll 6 dice and needs 4+ to get to the next set of dice where we need a 3+ and then that goes to another set of dice and theres a +1 becaus eof this rule but then a -2 from this other rule...
    it just devolves into endless maths and dice spam, the mechanics of the simulation just eclipse whats actually being simulated, where as warcry the fact that these 2 guys are trying to move in range of this objective while your other guy tries to kill the enemy holding it with a crossbow still felt like the star of the show because the mechanics needed to simulate those actions were streamlined enough.

  • @scathezombiestu3156
    @scathezombiestu3156 Před rokem +1

    Getting “into” Warcry is harder than playing it. There’s so many expensive books and bits I thought I needed to buy to play the game, that in hindsight, I really didn’t need. I kinda regretted missing the chance to buy the first Starter Box when it was released, so I had to spend a fair bit of money and time buying all the bits from that Starter box separately that I wanted (the terrain, the cards, etc).
    I grew up playing in the early/mid 90s, so I’m not really interested in modern GW minis and instead formed my warbands from older sculpts. This didn’t go down well with local “real” players of the game. I even made my own character cards with built-in wound tracker dials, which again, was frowned upon by local gamers because it wasn’t an official Warcry product. All of this reminded me why I stopped playing games as a kid.
    The game is super streamlined, but I personally don’t like all of the icons. A lot of them look the same and it can be difficult and time consuming figuring out what model can perform which ability. All of the abilities are also written in an extremely over-complicated MTG-like obtuse language which is in stark contrast to the simple rules.
    In my opinion, there’s literally dozens of fantasy skirmish games which easily rival Warcry in terms of playability and flavour and cost a fraction of Warcry and a lot of them are even FREE (I believe GW have now made huge sections of the rules available for free, but when I started playing I spent a lot on the books for the campaign info, which I ended up not even using). Games such as: Sword Weirdos, Necropolis28, Relic Blade, Verrotwood, Steve Jackson’s Melee, Brawl Arcane28, Open Combat, 1page rules Fantasy Skirmish, The Barons’ War, Tales from the Deathrealm, The Streets of Erekh, DUEL, Savage Blades, Forbidden Psalm, Maximum Massacre, Altar of the Dead Gods, Lobsterpot, Path to Glory, Reign in Hell.
    Warcry is great, but there’s so many great games out there to explore.

    Somone in my 40k group got tired of 40k and said he wanted to try a different game. I conveniently had the Red Harvest box that I still had not built. So, I built Red Harvest in a day and brought it to game night. Our learning match (where neither one of us truly knows the rules yet) took about 2.5 hours, but we both had a blast with a small force that was easy to manage. As we were cleaning up, we noticed other tables of 40k were still on round 3.
    Another thing I like is the simplicity of the scoring system: There is an objective. Did you complete it? No? You lose.

    I agree with this. One point from this video I that I really like, is that you can use any AoS faction and build a fun viable warband. The hobgrots warband is a great example. Kill Team is cool but the bespoke teams are just leagues then the non-bespoke teams. So if you want to play small scale, personalized 40k (10e Combat Patrol not withstanding), its just not as fun with Kill Team if you want to play, for example, Astra Millitarum. The game system makes it really fun and expansive for all the factions. The balance and variety equal more fun.

    I've been commissioned to paint 3 Warbands to date by a friend of mine. Chaos Legionairres, Rotmire Creed and Horns of Hashut. All done and some were a chore to do. He wants me to paint Splintered Fang next. He'll have to wait until I paint my Leviathan Space marines as Iron Hands. Maybe I might chance a game.

    Thanks, Peachy. I had no clue on Warcry. I've heard of it, but didn't know what it was like. Thanks for the info and pep talk. May nip my toe in that pool to see what it's like. The quick set up and finish, does appeal to me.

    I wanted to play warcry for years and the peeps and finally I found local peeps that play it and started it up at the local gaming bar and it's such an amazing game, def my fav game it's so good ❤
    A good balance between casual and comp, map layouts can be fun and twists be fun
    I have a lot killteams as my friend was in 40k and killteam 1 was fun but a bit clunky
    Im moving countries and I really hope peeps play warcry there or I can start it up ^^
    It's an amazing ruleset, even without the twist it's not pure a numbers game and I love it, I can make all sort of fun lists and I'm not stuck with 1 and the same list ☺️

    Yes! Play Blood Bowl! Come to the NAF Championship next year and have a laugh! I cajoled my daughter to come to this year's event with me and she had a great time despite being very nervous as she's only really played a handful of games.
    I need to dig out my Warcry stuff - I still have the original box set in shrink wrap and all the first batch of warbands untouched. Amazing models but there's only so much hobby time :)

  • @jgodwin17
    @jgodwin17 Před rokem

    Heck yes! Warcry is my favorite current skirmish ruleset by far. I love that the rules are very simple to teach, fast to pick up, but still contain a lot of tactical depth. I have a lot of friends who play board games, but never really enjoyed miniature games, but really got into Warcry.....because after your first turn most people really get how the game works and are running with it. Also, due to the short games every movement you make really matters, and many times going just for kills will lose you a game real quick.
    The way missions are set up is really awesome too, because the cards allow so much variability. If you manage to pull a set that really just is super lopsided for one player, deal out a new set. Even if you don't the games only take 30-40 minutes.
    Huge bonus in that it has a narrative system and the bespoke warbands are some of the coolest minis ever produced.

    Warcry can be Mordheim. All you need is some ruined “Old World” buildings. I’d highly recommend some of the MDF ruins for various other game systems. I wholeheartedly agree, by the way. Warcry is also my favourite GW rule set.

  • @gergelymacsai3776
    @gergelymacsai3776 Před rokem +2

    Like my pal always says: Warcry is easy to get into, hard to master. Blood Bowl is hard to get into and very hard to master. The key is to avoid getting diced by rolling as little as you can or by positioning so that rolls are tilted in your favor. It might be counter-intuitive but it is amazing game design.

    Skirmish games are the best games for limited playtime. They can lead to so many rabbit holes, with gang ideas coming from crazy moments.

    Great video that reflects many of my own thoughts. For a long time I had shied away from giving WarCry a chance, partly because I actually don't like AoS very much.
    But then I was invited to a WarCry tournament by someone whose invitation I couldn't refuse.
    So I tried it, and I was really flashed. The system is perfect for what it wants to be. The rules are simple but still allow for exciting and cinematic games. I am now absolutely convinced by WarCry. It's simply great!
    Greetings from germany! ;-)

    Hi, great video! Thanks so much for making it. I'm thinking about dipping my toe into the tabletop wargaming (or skirmishing). What you've said here about Warcry is really useful. I was thinking about getting into "The Old World" when it comes out next year, and so watched a few battle reports. It seemed like there wasn't that much scenery used, and the two armies kinda just face off against each other. Whereas in Warcry the scenery is integral. (Which is more of what I am looking for).
    Middle Earth Strategy also sounds interesting, although I think I like the look of newer models, does GW still support Middle Earth?
    Would love to get into Necromunda (campaign mode) but don't like the look of the models (sad face).
    Love the narrative hooks you mention and creating War Bands - That sounds really fun

    Might have a look at it, if the starter box comes with more interesting warbands than the current one - though the terrain looks awesome in it.

    I can never decide if it’s absolutely perfect or a bit boring. The simplicity is genius. Just genius. But, equally, the Wounds mechanic can make it quite dull. There’s something very evocative in WHFB and Mordheim that a couple of lucky rolls can take out almost anyone. Fighting Stormcast in WarCry is a bit repetitive and depends on objective play a lot.

    I've become an total convert to skirmish games in the last 2 years. 'Munda campaign last year, Mordheim and Warcry this year, as well as neat stuff like the Monster Hunter World game. If you like rules systems that aren't groaning under their own weight, but nevertheless provide loads of tactical nuance, I cannot recommend Adeptus Titanicus enough. Really strategic, but a 1000-1500 point game only needs take 60-90 minutes.
    Great content, as always :D Though I note with sadness the lack of an earth-shatteringly awkward Peachy double entendre!

    I'd been waiting for you to explain why you love Warcry so much. It has its flaws - I think too much damage relies on crits and you can randomly draw missions that are an instant win for one side - but every time I've played it it's been so much fun. As you say, the rules are very simple, the dice mechanic is fun, and the narrative campaigns are a great idea. Plus, for slow painters like me, it's a great way to both get variety and to finish projects.
    I really need to convert more of my friends to playing it.
    Blood Bowl is a great game, but it can be a bit Marmite as the dice rolls can be brutal. I have dabbled with friends and have enjoyed it, but it I find it _very_ tense.

  • @mattp6953

    Warcry is awesome. Once you tell people the rules are free and you can just grab random store terrain and bring ANY AoS models you want people light up about it.
