Mini Cooper S (R56) Front End Removal

  • There are a lot of repairs on a modern Mini Cooper that may require the removal of the front end of the vehicle. In this video I show you how to remove the front bumper skin and front support on a 2007 Mini Cooper S, to expose the front of the engine.
I performed this procedure because I was removing the engine and transmission. I also think it is beneficial if you want to repair some of the oil leaks on the front of your engine. The N14 in this car had several of these oil leaks.
I’ll be covering the engine removal and the oil leak repairs in other videos within this series.
I had some help with editing on this one from Javan Hovind.

Missing fasteners is a great reason to do as much work yourself as you can. Too many mechs are in too much of a hurry to replace those fasteners they lose or break...and a little later, the owner wonders why the car is starting to develop all those new rattles and squeaks a little way down the road. At least if you do it yourself, you know they're all in place...and if not, the you know where the problem is and how to get to it once it all starts to rattle loose. :-)

Jiffy lube guy used too many dugga duggas on it. My wife's 2012 MINI Countryman had a similar issue, but I wasn't in a shop trying to get it off. I was on the side of the road. Thankfully, I was able to find a 6 foot long piece of tubing that was used for a fence post and make a cheater bar on the lug wrench. I still had to lean on it pretty damn hard.

Dear Eric and all of his youtube friends. This video got me 98% of the way on an R60 Countryman S. 2 things were different:
    1. that plastic frame holding the radiator and the AC radiator is one solid piece so I could not slide the ac rad out of the plastic frame. If you set a tire on the ground it gave a good height to rest it all on.
    2. No one won a bingo on my session =(

That stated, don't buy a Mini if you don't maintain your own cars or have wheelbarrow of cash to dump over an overpass for someone else to.

Autozone has a variety of clips that will work with MINI trim. I don't think you needed to remove the inner fender liner completely, just detach the front four push rivets. I think you also didn't need to remove the eyebrow trim completely, just detach the fasteners where the trim meets the radiator support.
The Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Pro 25" breaker bar (for when you're "serious") is the Bomb.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  Před 6 lety +5

Thanks for the input. You'll see in an upcoming video that my suspicions were correct that you don't need to remove the washer bottle or the upper support. You just need to detach it from the strut towers. Personally I don't think it's a big deal to remove the fender liners. I also think it makes more room if you do. It also gives you the opportunity to clean out the debris that sits in front of the door that can cause corrosion.

Eric if you watch the factory assembly video here on youtube.com you can remove the whole front end just like you wondering about. Thank you for posting all of the Mini videos , without them I would not be able to fix my wife's Mini.

no different than most vw / audi even the 08+ civic needs the core support to be removed to pull the engine through the top.

I hate those wheel arch clips. My R50 has them.
But the front end is so much easier to take apart. Probably only 12 fasteners for the front bumper cover, 10 to remove the bumper bar and 4 more for the crash tubes. Electrical connections aren’t fancy though.

Once saw someone do this on the side of the road . Maybe they were not as crazy as I thought.
Oxford UK is the home of the Mini. Those BMW wheel bolts can get extremely tight over time.

I could imagine the cost just to get the radiator replaced. Almost as bad as a pt cruiser if not worse. Imo.... great job Eric even though you already have on the road by now I assume.

Cool video, wouldn’t mind speeding up the video frequency. To me it’s somewhat of a let-down to know you’ve already moved so much further (incl some almost previews on social media). Feels like this will go on for a few months before it’s done. I’m probably spoiled and I want it al NOW 😉

Just to put things in perspective, it took 2 editors 2 weeks to edit this video. Video editing is VERY time consuming. Since I have another channel and also videos for my Premium Members, I'm producing 3 videos a week as it is. I'm afraid adding more to that just isn't possible at this time.

Eric the German car guy. Lol
Interesting stuff. I have never really worked on a mini. I do work on e90's/e60's/e61's sometimes though.
Edit: Eric you should approach Edd China now he's independent and see if he wants to collaborate for a project. He was on Bad Obsession Motorsport last year.

I have 2 different size breaker bar and then a 4ft pipe for when I am really serious and dont care if it breaks. Usually I try heat if possible before that.
