DAY 8 PREVIEW: Week two of the summer of tennis and it’s the men’s ASB Classic.
There are some potential blockbusting opening day matches on centre court.
New Zealand wildcard Kiranpal Pannu has a wonderful opportunity in the evening session against veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet who has been ever present in the top 100 over the past decade and has been as high as seven in the world. Gasquet has one of the most beautiful single-handed backhands in the world.
A first visit to Auckland for Kazakhstan fifth seed Alexander Bublik playing former world number seven ranked Belgian David Goffin who has beaten Rafael Nadal twice. Bublik is an entertainer and there are similarities to Nick Kyrgios in his game.
Another crowd favourite veteran Italian Fabio Fognini takes on American Jenson Brooksby whose unorthodox style will provide a strong test for the Italian.
New Zealand wildcard Ajeet Rai is due on the Grandstand court at Midday to resume his second round qualifying singles match against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro. The world number 71 leads 6-7 (5) 6-3 5-3 with Rai serving at 15-15 to stay in the match.
