About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
Hey Glenn, my bassist has recently changed his strings, turned up early for practice and learned all of his parts.. is it possible he has finally evolved?
Probably just stopped sleeping with the guitar players girlfriend
He has evolved.
Nope, still sucks ass and other animate objects.
@Louis Frost Why are you so right?
Why is all the hate against the bass players?
"ARE YOU in a BAND full of DOUCHEBAGS?"... I hope not, it's just me and the bassist in mine!
I'm doing a one man band.. so I probably AM in a BAND full of DOUCHEBAGS
Just you and a bass player you say? So only the one DOUCHBAG in the band then hahahahahaha
you mean douchbass?
Dale Hards Same, Im a bassist with just a guitarist :)
I’m technically in a full band although me and the bassist are the only fuckers who will practice lol
What are the three most difficult years in a bass player's life?
Second grade.

The news about Glenn Tipton are really sad. My late dad was a Parkinson's patient so I 'm really familiar with this crap disease. HUGE respect to the man as well as the artist Glenn Tipton for performing live in that super high pro level all these years indeed diagnosed with Parkinson's.
I love the channel. This is the first time posting a comment after watching one of your videos. I’m a bass player. I absolutely LOVE the bass player jokes and I’ve seen some players they apply to. Maybe myself once in a while, but I change my strings regularly, set up my instrument and I practice my ass off to learn my parts. Anyway, love the channel and keep up the good work.
My drummer currently uses a Roland V-drum kit and triggers Addictive Drums to record. If you have a drummer with a lot of finesse, most notably you will loose highhat and cymbal articulation that just can't be reproduced with midi. Hear the good news... we just purchased an 8 channel interface to record his acoustic kit, rock on my brother!
hey man just want to say i been watching your videos for a long time and I love your channel !
What do you throw a drowning bass player?
His Amp.
Glenn, what do you think about the new HomePod, and the technology of auto adjusting the audio (levels and frequency as i understand) depending on where it's placed?
Is it gonna be a game changer in music production?
Cheers, from Argentina!
I wasted too much time with douchebags in bands. I found that it doesn't matter how good they are if they have a bad attitude, won't show up, and won't work as a band member.
My attempt to deal with this was to hold auditions in three phases. The first phase is that they send over demos. This is easy today.
The second phase is hanging out at a bar. It MUST be a bar. Observe how they behave. Do they drink too much? Are they a violent asshole drunk? Do they not drink at all? Is that a problem for you? Use this phase to suss them out.
The third phase is an actual session in a rehearsal room, to see if there is chemistry, and if they can deliver what you expect in a music performer.
Life is too short. If you are trying to become a professional band, then you have a VERY small window, because being young is a big part of the dying music industry. Do not waste time.
I don't even drink, get your conclusions...
So if I'd decline your invitations in a bar what would you do?
@ Guitarists Suck: If you decline, you fail the audition. There are more of you out there to pick from. The fact that you got self righteous just from reading this post marks you as a potential no-go in my band.
DrumWild this is a good idea, and I agree. Unfortunately for us weekend warriors it's hard to spend that much time on someone who might no work out; it's hard enough just to find time for the whole band to practice enough. Building a good band is hard!
Helium Road well, I didn't get self righteous at all, I was just stating a fact. Hahahaha I'm not trying to enter your band.
Maybe self-righteousness is in the eye of the beholder.
So in order to be in your band somebody gotta get wasted so you can see his behaviour? What if the candidate would drink analcoholics all the time? You wouldn't trust him at all?
No, the idea of going to a bar, according to the OP, is see if you are out of control and get wasted, in which case you will not be in my band, since we play a lot of bar gigs. Lack of basic reading comprehension on your part.
I always look forward to your new videos. Thanks Glen!
Hey Glenn fan from Namibia(Africa) here,I'm a fan of metal music and enjoy playing guitar. I would love to write my own music and setup a bedroom studio to write some stuff. Any tips for a one man band. Maybe setting up virtual drums and stuff. I know you would recommend finding band mates. But the metal scene in our country is very small. Would love your advice...Love the channel BTW.
I used hydrogen (free) for drums for a while, i recorded them onto a boss micro br and then played the other parts over it, was pretty cool.
mdfk79 Thanks will check it out.
www.hydrogen-music.org/hcms/node/21 you can buy it from amazon too, which is just plain wrong lol maybe check out a couple of reviews there.
Get ShortCircuit or another sampler VST, find some drum samples on the internet, and add the samples to your sampler.
Or... you could (and really should) learn how to play drums.
Toontrack is also great for applying soft triggers on a recording of an acoustic kit. Reaper's reaGate can be used as a midi gate for kick and snare triggers, and you can technically do this for the whole kit for blending samples in with the acoustic drum sounds, or for if you don't have the space in your studio for a room mic to be 10 ft away from your kit when you record, for example. You can also use reaGate to send midi signals to an electric kit via midi cables if you prefer, and dub record it on separate tracks. Even if I record acoustic drums, I'll still use EZ Drummer for the room mic, and for kick and snare triggers, because it's not dependent upon external hardware triggers, which can be weirdly expensive for what they are, when you think about it.
Yes do the solar guitar review!
Hey Glenn. I just wanted to say thank you for always being a figure that I can look to in terms of advice, especially in terms of local gigging. My band is in a bit of an awkward position in that we all are full time college students, all have at least one job, and are looking into careers other than music (my drummer in flying, my bassist in carpentry, myself in tv broadcasting). We can't really go anywhere as a band due to these commitments.
It's hard to not get discouraged when we see other bands with 5150s and Mark bass amps when we can only afford dinky little fenders. It's nice to have a bit of reality check from someone whose been in the business for a while.
You've earned a new subscriber. Keep it up

I was at guitar center, I was playing a Gibson Flying V cause it was the only v body in the store, when my brother asked for the di boxes. The guy behind the counter was recommending a schecter through a spider 4, then he turned to him and said with a frown WHY DO YOU NEED THAT.
Glad you guys mentioned using an e-kit...I've been bangin' away on one for about a year now, & I really like it...Of course, it's nothing like a real kit, but I only record myself here at home...I have a Yamaha DTX-532K & DTX400 combined to make a bigger kit...I record the midi into Reaper, & using a custom template, it just "works"...
Superior 3 has been a huge difference for me, I still have about every drum vsti made, but I'm slowly converting all my songs to SD3...
I just don't have the luxury of using a real kit where I live now, hopefully one day I'll make the jump, but for now, the e-kit will have to do...
Again, glad you mentioned using an e-kit...
Something to add from my own experiences regarding recording school advice: Don't look at it as an opportunity to demo your band!!! It can stifle the process of learning how to record when your also invested in the music as an artist and you're arranging and tracking on top of trying to record yourself... with a very limited skill set at that :/ - demo your classmate's band and let THEM demo your band! That way everyone can be invested in being a producer and a performer separately and craft both those skills more appropriately. The reality is that both your demos are going to suck because none of you are going to really know what you're doing until years later but at least this way you can get good quicker :P
Much love! Great content
Glen Senpai speaks the truth!
*Glenpai
Glenpai just has to become a thing
It is now!
グレンのおっぱい---->グレンパイ!
Pól Morvan dude you nasty XD nice
Also, your advice on checking levels in mono was probably the single most useful tip i've ever taken with regard to balancing, something two years of recording school and a year of NTM failed to touch on. [to my attention]
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Do a tutorial/series on how to record a band live for not a whole lot of money!!!
Sean Robledo This. Currently going for that live feel and sound in our recordings, and would really appreciate some tips and things to avoid
Play well and it will sound good
Soundcast Studios no i mean like the process, setup, and required equipment. Im just getting into recording and i wanna know how everything goes together and why.
acidbath32 Thanks for the advice dude!
Sean Robledo all you need is one mic hanging from the ceiling haha
I love watching these videos, especially the gear related stuff. I'm trying to start up a band, and this stuff gives me a HUGE head start. Thank you for what you do Glenn
Did you really just ask if we want to see Solar Guitars on your channel? OF COURSE WE WANT IT!
By the way... what about implementing polls on SMG‘s Viewers Comments?
Thanks for the greats content.
Cheers from Austria \m/
I was in a band with a single chief douchebag. One who decided that days before our first gig it was more important to camp outside the venue for band he was seeing the second time that week on the other side of the country than be back home to make our EPs properly, mix our music properly, or to plan and have to time to rehearse our set for our debut show and EP launch properly whilst we were working our arses off for his dream project.
One of the most important things I’ve learnt from being in bands is that if you have a real bad feeling that it is never going anywhere or if you are having to carry other people, they can’t keep up, can’t contribute or just don’t have the time or dedication, it’s far better to let them go or let the project die, and move on to greener pastures.
Peace and love from Manchester, UK friends.
Do you have any tips for hearing preservation and how to avoid tinnitus (especially from your perspective as a metal producer and recording engineer)?
My husband and I saw them perform that show in Hamilton (hi from a fellow Canadian), and Glenn actually performed the encore. It was so brilliant. I think I nearly dissolved in tears when he played Breaking the Law. One of the biggest items on my bucket list was to see them live. I missed them as a teenager in the 80s and dropped out of listening to metal entirely for a couple of decades (I'm playing a 7-string now that I decided I was done trying to grow up). I thought I'd lost my chance. Sad that KK doesn't get along with them, but I like Faulkner.
Well I got my priest tickets already so we'll have to see if that other dude can play
Andy is awesome!
Olaf von Blahblah Wellll, you got your tickets,, Hummphn.....We'll have to wait and see if you give him your approval!!!! Hope you don't have to ask for a refund!
216trixie it wasn't at all a negative comment dude.
Dude, Andy Sneap is in band HELL. Check it out too.
I never knew Sneap was a pro musician, I just know him for his awesome engineering/production skills. Especially This Godless Endeavor
Hey Glenn I'm a music lover your contemporary as far as age and lived through the golden age of metal. I miss those shows that came around every summer for a decade or so. I just wanted to say while I'm not in a band or a producer I love music and learning the behind the scenes stuff on your channel. Your honesty and work ethic is so awesome! My son and I had music in common he was an amazing guitarist and I was just an average drumer. But we loved playing and talking about music. He was killed in a car wreck a little over a year ago and the world truly lost a talent. Your show has been cathartic for me he my son really wanted to be a engineer / producer. The knowledge I have gained from your posts has helped give me an understanding of why he loved this side of music so much. Not intending this to be an essay just wanted to say thank you for working so hard on your channel and it shows your posts are full of useful content and very well recorded. Kudos sir! 🤘
Hey Glen, what do you think about the Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci series of guitars? And what do you think of bands like Dream Theater who go into the studio with small ideas and jam until they have the final song?
Good stuff (as per your usual) and always fun to hear you zing someone. Cheers!
Hey Glen,
What is your opinion on the more elitist guitarists (surprisingly it’s worse with bassists) who refuse to have a legitimate conversation about brands because they believe their brand is the best. I.e. a PRS guitarist who thinks the bassist is inferior due to his use of a music man
Ignore them, they are either fishing for attention,or have zero idea what they are talking about.
Gotta love the cork sniffers. See in music equipment and guitars, everyone has a preference, and not all of the great stuff is expensive.
They just need to stop looking at nameplates and start playing, maybe then people would be more willing to jam with them.
Love the show thought i had notifications turned on for the last month but didnt, i do now. Cant wait to see what u come up with next, you make me laugh so hard sometimes it hurts, almost forgot what that was like so thanks.
Glen do you feel that recording on tape actually is more " organic" you know like us older guys that remember vinyl and how it has that " sound " .
Just curious your thoughts about that and how can one achieve the most natural sound with todays digital equipment ?
Thanks . love your channel.

Hey Glen, Greetings from Salt Lake City. I'm working on a project right now where the band got all bent out of shape when they came in to record and I wouldn't let them start until I had contracts signed. I gave them the contracts before hand so all they had to do was bring them in when they came in to record. They really didn't like it when I charged them 2 hours record time because it took that long to go over things. I've seen a lot of new guys get burned pretty bad and I think it'd be great if you took a sec to stress how important it is to have the legal element in place and to share any stories you have of getting burned/saved by having or not having things set in place before hitting the record button.
I want a "Frick you, Glenn!" shirt
tymongoji as long as he does a "Fuck you, Glenn!" Shirt as well
Don't click url. ⬆⬆⬆⬆
Hows about a 'Take off you hoser, eh?' shirt...
electronic drums certainly have their place.maybe not in a live situation/gig but most certainly for practising with i.e putting head phones on to annoy your neighbours a bit less while learning a track like Overkill or Moby Dick.modern electronic kits have progressed dramatically in the past few years and although they have their drawbacks, they certainly have their advantages too.good show man, keep it up.i subscribed to your worthy channel with your obvious professional advice. peace
Apple is not interested in professional users anymore at all.
They went all lifestyle brand.
Outdated hardware and ridiculous prices.
They used to be good, today they are not even mediocre.....
Sadly true, Apple used to be a really good brand for laptops. Now it’s way behind and just playing catch up. I’ve seen $700-$900 laptops with the same specs as a MacBook Pro and Mac pros are going for $2,000-$4,000.
I don't know... The new "Cheese grater" Mac Pro seems pretty nice. I know, not a laptop, but still. I too thought Apple was on its way out, though seeing this surprised the hell out of me.
Hey, Glen (Glenn? I can't remember how your name's spelled). I agree with you about the 'bigger bands' using drum samples in their music (& yeah, they really ARE that obvious, by the way).
For me, personally, I pretty much am (what you call) 'the kid recording in his bedroom' & I've worked with drum samples that a friend of mine gave me two years ago (My friend sampled her own acoustic kit for a project that she was working on & passed them on to me). They have done their job fantastically & I even mastered them using your "How to mix heavy metal drums" tutorial & I was able to get them to sound good for what they were.
Now, I've recently gotten into teaching myself how to play drums & are using the Roland V Drums (with double-kick pedals, of course). Again, that's still samples, but I feel it's a step in the right direction, as it's half-way between samples & playing the real thing. I intend on eventually replacing that kit with an acoustic kit & settin' that up for all of my future recordings.
I bought my first guitar Cheapo Epi SG because of Glenn Tipton.
Coming off the drum plugins for anyone without the money/space/both: XLN Audio's Addictive Drums is a great plugin, at least from my experience. They have sales at least 4 times a year. Extremely customizeable. You can also send each drum to a buss for auxiliary tracks for more refinement. If you don't have the space for a full drumset, consider this.
Hey Glenn, quick one:
Ive noticed you are a gamer and was wondering have you ever produced tracks for videogames? If not would you be interested in such gigs?
Cheers form Argentina! keep up the good work! lml -.- lml
Another amazing video, can't wait for the next metal vocals video!
What brand of shampoo do you use?
L'oreal because hes worth it... :-)
I love your content man. Soo funny and knowledgeable. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
What are your thoughts on Gibson’s current situation? I feel sad for the company’s legacy, but hopefully they’ll work it out in the end...
Wilhelm The Conquerer Gibson is swimming in debt and their quality is dropping fast, but the name is still worth millions, it would probably be best if the were bought by someone who knows what their doing and raise the quality of the instruments
they can go fuck themselves. they make mediocre and downright shit guitars at 5 times their real value, and then try to fuck over better companies.
Great episode. Thank you so much for answering noob questions. Seems like usually, you gloss over the basics, but this was awesome. Great content, early-congrats on the 250k!
Hey Glen good luck on hitting 250K. Its great to see someone from our industry hitting that number. Keep up the content. Its awesome!
Man I can't believe I wasn't already subscribed to you almost every weekI am watching your videos
Hey Glenn, i recenly bought a peavey valveking 212. It replaced a line 6 spider 4, are you proud of me?:D
Oscar Lövblad everybody's proud of you
Congratulations!
Valveking isn't the best tube amp, but it's better than nothing.
László Szerémi yep, its the best i could afford.
I've got the Valveking microhead. It was the first amp I bought after moving to Japan. I think they're great. I've used it live, even rented it to other performers because of its direct out. It's a great circuit, rock the fuck out of it!
it's funny, one of the guys I work with at my day job used to be an audio engineer (he's now head of IT at a big company and doesn't have time), and he was saying the same thing as you and Warren about recording live in the room. I love hearing stoner/doom bands who do that because of the particular vibe it gives off from all the players working together. Hopefully we start seeing a resurgence of it with my generation!
what do you think about recording bass by putting a mic on the amp (with a good bassist, good bass, fresh string, good amp, an sm57 and maybe not only for metal) greetings from Colombia.
Just found your channel! Absolutely love it!
Is it worth paying to go to an audio engineering school or would you recommend sitting at home and stare at a screen for countless hours trying to learn everything for free? I've already got some very basic knowledge, but I'm lost when it comes to the technical stuff.
By the way, I just changed the strings on a Squire P bass that has been sitting in an attic for about 12 years, then in my room for another 2.
School is good. Depends on how motivated you are
I recorded with my group for a school test on music.
The Year 10s (us) were the 'musicians', and the year 11s were the 'engineers'
I'm the Bass player, and I'm the only one who actually knew the whole song, from riff to structure (go figure).
Wonderful, so I had the amazing opportunity to force myself into learning the keyboard and guitar parts from memory and telling them how and when to play their parts.
The 'engineers' took turns one by one to record, the first guy froze up, and immediately, there were also level issues.
The Bass was waaay too loud, it nearly damaged the headphones we were using.
We were also told to shorten the song.
The second one did well, but us, as a group, weren't able to play the entire song, due to only me knowing it completely.
Third recording goes well, but we still had to do a short and butchered take. I'll hand it to the third one, she knew what she was doing. All the levels were perfect. I would say that she probably did best.
We asked for a metronome, but the teacher refused.
I don't remember the fourth too well, we probably treated it more as a practice for an idea I had, which was for me to do hand signals while playing my part, to show where we were.
I'm pretty sure the guy somehow managed to only record the ROOM MIC. I think he failed.
The fifth wasn't good though, this time, the engineer, decided to cut down the amount of instruments. It sounded like shit.
I told her to turn the bass down so many times, and she just fake-rolled the knob on the board.
The Sixth and final was our best 'performance', however, the guitar player messed up the last part and refused to change what she was playing and insisted on everyone skipping to the ending, rather than doing chorus into ending.
Basically, she refused to literally stop for half a second and play the rest of the chorus.
I was having to focus on 4 things at a time: Playing Bass, "conducting", keeping time, and turning up my volume throughout the song, since the engineer decided to make it difficult for me by turning me down until I was inaudible towards the end (when my volume pot topped out), and having to keep time with my foot (which I eventually gave up on, because it was mentally exhausting to split focus 4 ways).
To think I was considering doing the vocals, after out singer left the group.
Is there any way I could have controlled the situation better? Or am I just going to have to give up?
Because I need to make sure people actually LISTEN to the song and PRACTICE it.
Seriously, the nerve of some people when they say "Yeah, I practiced it" (say that in a bitchy voice, if ever you read this out).
Fuck, why couldn't I just have better bandmates and let myself be a useless cunt. Why do I have to pull so many strings..
--
Frick you and thanks, Gwenda, from London
Glenn, have you heard of Miktek PM11 mic . This mic sounds killer on kicks, at least in some videos. Can you do a review? :)
Hey, Glen here's two questions for your next viewers comments:
1. What do you think about pink floyds early stuff? (Dark side of the moon & older)
2.What's your favorite Beatles album? (no compilations please)
Also how good is an Epiphone Casino for metal?
How do i deal with drummers that drum when your talking?
simtel 55555 simply play the guitar when they try to talk in revenge. Bonus points for training the bassist to always play when the drummer speaks, then start playing yourself when they start arguing about it.
"Bro, shut the fuck up" seems to work
I turn my amp up to 8 and turn off the noise gate and let the feedback nail him and the bassist
The worst is when they won't shut up when you are tuning
Regarding hackintoshes: I use one. I call it the Millennium Falcon. Fastest ship in the fleet, but it has....quirks...
If you get one, make sure you back up on the regular!
“....they bitched about bitching....”
Ha! Correct.
Keep the tutorials coming, Glenn! There's so much to learn, and the vocals one is a great return to form. Yeah, buddy!
I had a bassist until today who could barely play their instrument and was never there for practice (awkward as we practiced at his). He cancelled for the 6th time in a month so I kicked his arse out. I’m from a town with no music scene but it’s better to not have a bass player than to not have a band. Besides, a bassist is just a guitarist who can’t count to six
Could you make a video going over different types of effects? Like compression, EQ, reverb etc... Im still a novice when it comes to recording so this would help a ton. Keep it up with the awesome videos!
Hey Glenn. I'm getting back into bass playing and joined a band that's hoping to gig soon-ish. My main downside to that is while I do have a nice TC Electronic BG250 combo, I don't have a bass head (I'm a drummer by trade, so cymbals, skins and sticks take priority)
Given that they appear to be the "relatively cheap and cheerful" option at my local Andertons, what's your opinion of Callien Kruger heads? Are they worth using or should I save up for a higher-end head from a more established brand like TC Electronic or Orange?
GK is awesom, and on pro stages around the world. Flea for one.
Surf pawn shops. I got a $500+ SWR bass head for $80 at the shop down the street. Most pawn shops have a guy or two that specialize in guitar and know that guitars are a good market for them, but they don't see the same value for bass, and bass equipment doesn't move as fast, so you can find some great deals. Good luck, and happy hunting!
I got me G. K mb500 for like 350$ and managed to find a used Hartke 410 for around 150(it was in great shape, feel they didn't really know what they had) so for about 500 got a nice rig that pushes great amount of air. Not too hard to build up a decent road worthy rig for the poor man if u look hard enough
The lightning intro is back! Yeah baby
Drummers complain about electronic sets? Four words, 1 2 3 4
Love your stuff! Thanks for the random like of my weird ass picture on instagram. Have no idea how you ended up seeing it but glad it made you laugh lol
Hey Glenn, I was in a band that was starting to go places but I had to leave, reason why was because I dared to speak up against someone who was posting racist things on his Facebook (this person also happens to be a very established name in the music scene where I'm from).
I later found out the band in question were planning on kicking me out anyway (my friend showed me some pretty gut wrenching comments so, needless to say, I was pretty hurt and pissed off that they threw me under the bus).
My question is, what's your advice for someone like myself who was either gonna have to leave or be kicked out of a band due to band politics?
Sounds like you're better off not being in that band. From what you described, that's a pretty volitale environment. The idea of a band is to make music - if the time is spent fighting and talking shit behind the members' backs, it very likely isn't going to work out.
It's his facey acc, and his opinion, not yours, sounds to me like you were the one making it political, if you hadn't been a snowflake they probably wouldn't have been thinking about dumping your arse.
No, his business not yours if you don't like it just have your say and leave, stop being a whiny little bitch about it.
pete hixson Okay, the real whiny bitch is the person why cries foul when his ideas are challenged. If you say some racist shit, be prepared to get backlash for it. And it's also a bitch move to fire someone just because of that. I hear racist shit all day at work. If I popped off, I'd likey get fired, too. And that's some supreme bullshit.
Pete, I'm not a snowflake, however, if you say something racist (like when Phil Anselmo did the Nazi salute and said "White Power!") I have no problem telling it to you that you're wrong and that you shouldn't think that way about people just because of their skin color, it's a very myopic viewpoint to have. Calling someone out for racist behavior vs. being offended cause someone said "black" instead of "African American" are two different things. So please don't label me before you know me, that's all I'm gonna say
And to Fairy, I appreciate your support and thanks for backing me up in this case, however I will just say, you did indirectly tell Pete to kill himself, that's not cool, don't tell people to do that. You can say "go fuck yourself" or something but telling someone to commit suicide is one of the worst things you can say to someone so just be careful, dude. Again, though, thank you for the support
Being involved..... I'm a thirty year retired live engineer who got into PM /LD before retiring from LD Systems in Houston in 03' after a work related accident. Now I work on the stage instead of in front of it.
Makes me a good engineers best friend, and a bad engineers worst nightmare. Lol
Dude I started on a Peavey 250 watt sound system with great big fuckin knobs for faders.
Anyhow great shit your teaching , love the real world tude.
😎🎸🎶✌️
Here's a question: opinions on Death, and/or Cynic?
Absolutely agree with the "live in the studio" comment. Keep up the great content. Learn something every time.
Yes! Please demo one of the Solar guitars! Been wondering when you'd get one on your show.
Also, still waiting on that mastering tutorial ;) you said it on a livestream that it's quite simple.
Your videos are the best!!!!! Keep on kickin ass!!
Thanks for answering my email! and it shows you really care about your fans thank you great video
I just want to leave a huge thanks here for you Glenn. You have singlehandedly brought me up from a dork with a guitar and a "studio" app on my phone to a dork with a desktop running reaper and a pretty decent recording skill set. If I hadn't found your channel, I certainly wouldn't be able to be in the process of writing and recording my own album as I am now. So keep up the phenomenal work!
Just subscribed to your channel, love it! I'm learning so many new things.
Thank you for that and keep it up!
Cheers from Catalonia ;)
You’re such an awesome dude, thanks for your videos. You have a wealth of knowledge. Even stuff I already know is great to hear coming from you!
One thing I love about mixing in mono is finally getting to the point where I click it into stereo and get blown away. All doubts are destroyed and the Monty Burns "EXCELLENT!" just erupts from my core.
you are definetly one of the most underrated youtubers I know, you deserve way more subs and fans. keep up!
This guy's rude , wise , and wears glasses fucking love it ,keep it up !
Id like to buy one of your rule 2 shirts as a bassist myself lmaoooo
I really enjoy your myth busting. It helps me make better decisions on what gear to buy and what not to buy.
Awesome show!!! Glad I found this channel.
Great show as always! :D
Love your content, Glenn - your tips and insights were the thing that pushed my amateur half-ass production capabilities into something more closely resembling a more sizable portion of a whole ass.
At the risk of invoking your wrath I gotta second the request for a video on artificial drum production. I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts and tips for us little guys just doing this as they can. As a husband, father, and sole breadwinner for my family my time and budget for recording gear and space is pretty severely limited too, and other factors such as living in a city where I'm more likely to find a unicorn grazing in my front lawn than a great metal drummer make keeping up with the big boys like you damn near impossible.
Keep up the fantastic work!
Recording school is excellent if you find a place with access to a lot of equipment. Thanks to my uni having four pairs of control and live rooms that are bookable during the week I have access to millions of pounds worth of desks, mics and outboard gear I would never get otherwise. This has meant I get time to learn how to use a lot of advanced techniques unavailable to me at home with my Tascam U2x2 and two mics. The only downside is having to share the studios with performance students. There is no pain like watching a performance student coiling a cable...
Hey Glenn!
Love the show. What do recommend when it comes to affordable and quality tuner pedals? During my teenage years, I discovered (after many embarrassing moments on stage) that using tuner pedals are one of the easiest ways to ensure your band doesn't sound like total shit! What do you recommend?
Much love from North Carolina!
Love watching your videos. Made me also feel inspired to keep doing my dreams no matter what the scenario is. My life, I'm going to live it the way I want, without nobody stopping me too.
11:44 - I love this, my band has been only recording off the floor now. We've tried recording the individual instruments separately but it never came out right, it always sounded lifeless. The only things we record after the fact are vox and overdub guitars (for obvious reasons).
Love your work Glenn!
I just had 2 experiences mixing tracks for artists who used ez drummer for their drum tracks, one techno metal project, one pop rock. The kicks, toms and crashes actually sound quite good and even the snares aren't bad, they can actually fool you sometimes if they're programmed and mixed well. The real failings were the hats and rides. On the metal project it wasn't much of a problem because they're riding on the crashes a lot of the time, but they give themselves away in the more dynamic pop/rock setting.
Your converters can make a world of difference in your mix
Keep, kicking ass love the content.
Awesome video's...always make my day better
Loving your channel G Man - hope you hit your magic 250k subs :)
If you want 100% mono compatibility I'd recommend trying pan laws at -3, -4.5 and -6 in your DAW, check out which one works best for your mixes.
I miss recording live drums. It was always a fun experience of experimentation.
Hi Glenn.
This is kinda a beginners question, primarily because 'I'm no technician just knows how to play' - put that on a shirt :)
My theory: What do you need knobs on your instrument for if you're going to manipulate the sound in every way through every effect pedal, preamp, software?
I usually just crank the instrument /or flat setting-> compressor -> amp.
When your sound is the way you want why do you turn the knobs on the instrument instead of the amp? The sound comes from the amp+cap, not your instrument. You'll affect the entire line of pedals and the sound itself by turning the instrument down not the amp??
If you understand - where am I wrong??
I love your channel, and all of your content Glenn... i just wish your videos/episodes could be a little bit longer.. i could sit and watch and learn from these videos of yours for hours on end (going back through all of your older videos, to catch back up, since ive been gone with medical issues) Keep it up!
