We’re going to compare the two side by side. We’ll take a look at four categories: offense, defense, intangibles, and achievements and accolades. @@suppaman12 Absolutely, but still, Jordan, Bird, Magic, James, Bryant were the ones that I thought were so brilliant. And I have the advantage of age to compare them all. There will always be the "new guy" that is brilliant, a perfectionist, and you are right, I missed some of the newer guys. But in pure inspiration, making a team better, sharing the goals, and making exciting basketball for the country, I like my picks. But you have a different perspective than me, and basketball keeps moving to a higher level, so I think you are correct also. I guess it's just a matter of eras. Now, go fight with your grandchildren about who is the GOAT. Trust me, you WILL be ME one day.

Kobe is a fantastic player, the eye test proves that.
The eye test also shows Jordan was clearly better in all facets of basketball. MJ was a cold, super functional machine with very sharp and clean methods of destroying you without having really bad shooting nights. He was a lot more tactical and surgeon like. He played more fluidly and less conscious. He was more stream of conscience mixed with intellectual. A perfect balance of fierce and disciplined fire. While Kobe was more like goku - raw unfiltered brilliance with no E break. Glad I got to see both play. It was a pleasure to see such excellence on the court.

The thing you briefly mentioned at the end about the teams Jordan had which allowed him to win his championships. It should be noted another reason MJ is head and shoulders above Kobe is because Kobe had a chance to have great teams, teammates, an amazing coach, and because is was so arrogant, disrespectful, and polarizing, he blew it all up every time. He couldn't get along with anyone. MJ for any character flaws he had that alienated people, could still make it work with everyone he played with. MJ pushed people as well. But I think MJ did it with more respect than Kobe. MJ was more of a "tough love" kind of personality. You had to earn MJ's respect with hard work because he just wanted his teammates to play at their very best. Kobe on the other hand seemed more like an anti social misanthrope who didn't respect anyone, or care about anyone except himself. Maybe he should've been a golfer or tennis player. MJ simply made every one of his players better. The same cannot be said about Kobe. MJ all the way.

I fully concur and have always said so. Michael was a better and more efficient scorer, a more manically competitive player, far better defender, and MJ was quicker, stronger, and had massive hands which tremendously helped his game. Finally, he had something else Kobe didn't have "hangtime in the air that was uncanny". That's why he is Michael Air Jordan. Finally, he was a greater rebounder and passer.

He forced so many shots down the stretch of close games because he didn't want anyone else taking them. Not saying that's a good thing but to say he's not clutch altogether based on the percentage alone is unfair. Just ask opposing players and coaches if Kobe was clutch or not, they FEARED him in crunch time

@Gr8 1 wtf, Kobe is the 2nd greatest SG no doubt. Kobe legit overshadowed wade in wade's prime. Just check out Wade's all NBA 2nd team count. D-Wade is arguably the 3rd best SG. Like in what way is wade better than Kobe? Perhaps d-wade has a better drive to the basket. But I really can't think of another category where D-wade surpass the Black Mamba(stats wise, trophy wise, talent wise, or skill wise). Don't get me wrong. D-wade is top 30 of all time to me. But Kobe is at least top 10

I don't think anyone questions that. Even more so, Kobe never changed the goal post, he wasn't trying to argue ring status, this or that. When your the goat your the goat. Kobe's respect and fear from oppenants is obvious, he left his mark on the game. That's untouchable too!

Jesus, Coca Cola and Michael Jordan ruled the world for 15 years together. If you would ask a granny in a remote South American village who Michael Jordan is she would say the basketball player, and that period was prior to mass use of the internet, nevertheless social networks, google and youtube for an example. Kobe wasn't even the most popular in the NBA league until 2011 when he expanded his brand to China, and between 2000-2010 Iverson, McGrady, Carter, KG, Duncan, etc. were far more popular players then him.
PS: And on subjective note, Michael Jordan is the only player that is even better then i remember him. Each time i watch the highlights i end up perplexed at what he used to do on so many levels of basketball.

pepamethodman - totally true. The modern NBA is modeled after his Bulls. Nobody dreamed of guards being the main players on a championship team - didn't think it was possible. Once David Stern saw how much people loved watching guards over big men fighting in the paint, the NBA made defensive rule changes over 5 or so years to make the game easier for perimeter players (guards and small forwards primarily)
MJ revolutionized the NBA in a dozen different ways - on a systemic level. He was the perfect player and man who came at the right time bridging the old NBA and today - for that alone there will never be another MJ.

I'm sure I'm going to get attacked for this but I don't care. I hate some of the arguments that get made because they are trivial when you look at the entire picture. Yes, Kobe scored 81 in a game, yes he outscored an entire team in 3 quarters which is ridiculous. Jordan still has a higher ppg average. Yes Jordan was swept in the playoffs when he had no supporting cast against hall of fame teams. Kobe blew a 3-1 lead when he had no supporting cast. So what??
Hakeem The Dream did something Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, hell no other player has ever done. He won a championship with no other all star on his team. So what?? Does that make him the best? You have to look at the totality of a player's game, not just arguments in favor of one or the other.
