  • The ending of Damien Chazelle's Babylon takes the audience on a rapid tour through cinema history. In this video I have annotated each of the 50 different films that appear in the montage as a reference and guide. For educational purposes.

      I'd definetely add The Lion King, Toy Story, Spritied Away, 12 angry men, the Godfather, Shrek, Star Wars and Seven Samurai. Perhaps Shawshank, The Dark Knight, Spider-verse, City of God, Lord of the Rings, A Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Do the Right Thing, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Donnie Darko and Parasite
      Some of these picks are more personal, but others are either in the Library of Congress or are the types of films I would put in the library of congress

    I think it absolutely fits. Babylon is not a story about the history of films. It's a story about a transitional phase in Hollywood and how all parties involved like the actors who are about to leave, actresses on the rise, the studio execs, producers and sound guys and musicians react to it. Behind all of this, the central theme of the story is all these people can come and go but the ideas will be firmly set in stone where it should, in the hearts of the common people who watch movies in the theatre. The final montage gives exactly that as the camera pans across the theatre where your every day people are watching a movie entranced by sight and sound. In the middle is Manny the central protag who is kinda representative of a figure in the movie business who can 'see' the future and precociously understand what innovations will come. The final montages is Manny having a figurative premonition about everything that cinema has ever been and will be in the future. It's sort of like a Biblical revelation except here the director Damien Chazelle who is the creator, is letting his own character Manny know what he has helped bring in and what will come in the future (it's a stretch but babylon is so meta). Manny is spell bound (like the rest of us) and his tear stricken face is exactly like that of a man who gets a vision of the future. So on first glimpse it looks like Chazelle gave us a montage of the history of cinema but he is also giving his own character a complete arc- Manny now knows that after all he has done he is now firmly a part of something grand and larger than life which is all he wanted to be.

    In February 19th, 2023, I started the Babylon Marathon!
    I've watched Babylon for the third time, then I look up for the information about the movies in the montage scene, glad I found this video!
    I've watched during this week (19th til' 24th of February) all the 50 different films, it was one of the greatest experience of my life.
    For this fact, when I watched the film back in January 19th, 2023 at the cinema, I knew about 20 out of the 50 movies on the list, but now, thanks to this channel, I can name every scene from each film shown in the Montage Ending of my favourite 2022 film: Babylon.

    I love this ending and I love Babylon so much !!! I'm from Argentina and I watched it on a packed theater and it was amazing !!! The movie was so funny and such a blast, especially with a crowd. We all laughed our asses off. During the second half, when things got more dramatic I was soooo invested. I almost cried during the final 20 minutes where the character arcs finally wrap up. Hell, I still almost cry remembering the scenes when I listen to the soundtrack and remembering in which part of the movie it played. This ending is marvelous, this movie is MAGICAL, and I loved every second of it.

    • @robotjoness
      @robotjoness Před rokem

      @@cineflect I watched it subbed !! Depending on how big the movie is (talking marketing, overall popularity and etc) it will have subbed only, dubbed only or both at the same time. Babylon only had 2D Subbed but it was overall met with packed seats soooo that was kinda funny. lmao
      Also it depends on what kind of movie it is. Kids movies/animated movies will prioritize dubbed over subbed (because well, they're movies for kids).
      Glad to hear you love hearing experiences in the movie theater. I was honestly lucky to watch this movie on a packed theater. At least in here it was a bit popular compared to other countries.

    I had never even heard of chazelle back then, but one fine evening I just decided to go to the theatre and watch a random movie and picked this one. What a movie and what a night. I came out so invigorated, it was like my soul was flying. I would often take the tram to the theatre when leaving to watch a movie and walk back home when I came out, so I would have time to think about the film (and of course Southern France is beautiful in the evening so it was always a nice walk). I honestly don't even remember going back home after this viewing! Mentally I was still inside the hall, watching this movie on repeat again and again. I wish I could live that day all over just so I could re experience all of it. Been a big chazelle fan after this. Left France because my course ended but I still remember shell shock inducing cinema experiences, slow and long walks back home, and the beautiful evenings. Thank you so much Damien, youre a true bro.

    Genuinely, one the the only issues with this movie is that this ending montage was missing a lot of movies I’d consider important to film history. Like Terminator 2, raiders of the lost arc, the train recording, trip to the moon, all of them fit into the list. But why is Avatar in there as the only movie past the 2000s? Wouldn’t the dark knight, Toy Story, and ratatouille be pretty important picks? And why isn’t there any Star Wars, and why isn’t 12 angry men in this montage? Like there was more room for more clips because in the movie the clips are pretty spaced apart because there were too many movies. Still though, this being my biggest issue, and this still being a scene better than some entire movies is still telling to how great this movie is

    The first annotation is incorrect. That isn't "The Horse in Motion" or "Sallie Gardner at a Gallop" from 1878. That is actually "Animal Locomotion, Plate 626" or "Annie G" from 1887. It's a different galloping horse with different movements and it's done nine years later. The film you're thinking of is silhouetted. This is an extremely common mistake, however. Jordan Peele called Annie G the first film in Nope, likely mistaking it for Sallie Gardner (which is arguably still not the first film either.) The fact that Babylon features Annie G first (as the first film) makes me suspect they also made the mistake.

    I don't think this scene fits into the movie at all. I think, after Chazelle noticed that he didn't really tell anything about the history of the film throughout the film he just put a montage at the end. Anyone can edit a montage of movie scenes. This is not high art

      @@freezasama7430 An overall lack of originality. The story was predictable. Acting was passable. It didn't innovate on the art form at all. The creativity was purely driven by spectacle. @@freezasama7430 Could you elaborate? I'm watching scenes from Avatar, and newer CGI films, and I honestly see the textures in Avatar 1 to be much more plastic feeling. Like look at Disney's Lion King, I know it's a bad movie, but the CGI looks way better. The textures in the landscape, and animals feel much more realistic. When I watch Avatar I definitely notice the CGI. Or what about Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall street, there are a lot of CGI scenes in that movie, but you have no idea it's there. Same goes for David Fincher movies.
