I read the book less than zero, and the movie, has always been a favorite, way too dark. Yes I emulated his look while I sold suits at a department store around the time of the movie
Very bad idea bringing her to a party of his jerk friends. Horrible first date choice. I guess what I never understood about this movie was for such a mature type nice guy, why he would like hanging around such snobby immature high school buddies. All I could think was he clearly cared way too much to please his parents, and feel he had to still fit in with others his age that were raised in lots of money like himself. Caring too much what everyone else thinks, which almost lost him the girl.
You do understand Blane was trying to sleep with her right? He's being cute and charming but it's very obvious. he takes a 6 pack with him and puts his hands in his pockets that's why he looks so disappointed when he see Steff because he stepped on his game.

He carried the stuff to show he would actually keep his hands in his pockets. Like sort of “look I’m gonna carry all the stuff but my hands will still be in my pockets because I don’t want to give you that impression.” As for steff, blane was disappointed because the whole movie steff was giving him a hard time the entire movie for talking to/liking Andie so when Blane saw him inside the room he wanted to leave because he knew steff would have something to say.

I was always cool with the class Molly in high school. She was always cool with me. I enjoyed walking with her to class. But the girls that somewhat looked like the blonde, were not mean like her. They were the ones that I talked with. The handsome guys were cool with me too. I wasn't a geek, or the handsome guy. I turned heads, (I think) closer to 20 years old. I was a late bloomer. I wasn't the Duckie either. He had a super "I'm here" energy, with an eye for clothing. He whipped up outfits with no effort. I wore 501s, designer jeans, boat shoes, and tennis shirts with the collar. I bought my own clothes, and bought knock off Reebock. I did buy K-SWISS tennis shoes that my brother stole from Me! I was limited on not wearing goth clothes. I finally got to express myself once I became a hair stylist. I would still wear shirt and tie and sometimes a suit jacket. This movie was my junior year in high school
My mom was kind of like Molly in this film, but mainly because she dated a wealthy guy and hung out with a lot wealthy kids. She was more middle class, but very popular, a cheerleader.
I just realized, after all these years, Benny was rather smart. In my HS, calculus was a Junior/Senior elective class and only the smart kids took it. I wish Hughes had just a bit more depth because there was a lot going on around miserable Andie and we just couldn't see it.
He tells her she can go home and change (she was very pretty) and telling her 'We can go out with your friends. Crawl under a rock." Me thinks I would have ended the date there...insulting my clothes, taking me to the scummy party full of idiots she has to put up with at school, he takes her to the lion's den. Jackasses running around in their underpants would have me running out like the Road Runner, puff of smoke, and the classic 'Beep Beep!!'

I think it was a mix. For example, my mom attended Beverly Hills high school, where a large percentage of students were very wealthy. My mom was not wealthy, she grew up in a middle class household. However, she was very popular as she was a cheerleader, so she was great friends with a lot of wealthy kids.
My theory is that Andie, Duckie and Jenna were academically gifted (maybe even geniuses) and were invited to attend the high school in order to continue to make the school's academic stats look great so that the wealthy parents of many of the students would continue to send their kids there given the school's academic reputation. The school was probably in a wealthy district thereby having good educational resources. Andie even told the principal when she got in trouble that she was lucky to be getting a good education. Andie seemed to be taking the opportunity seriously, Duckie was afraid to take the opportunity seriously and face the world outside of his high school bubble even though he may have been capable of excelling like Andie (and Andie even knew that he was pretending to not know the answers in preparation for a test when the two were studying) and Jenna probably got in based on academic merits but eventually found that she could care less about the school's politics and grading system so she became disillusioned and unwilling to take her academics seriously.
@@holiday197 that makes sense. I remember when I was in High School, it was possible to enroll in a high school out of your home district, but you had to have a good reason, other than just desire. I even remember some boys attending different schools out of district because they had a better sports program with better coaches. It usually took having a lot of pull and resources to make it happen though
