Andie (Molly Ringwald) has a fight with her father (Harry Dean Stanton) about her mother leaving.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes crafts an exemplary '80s Brat Pack romance out of the standard Cinderella story in Pretty in Pink. Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) is a teenager who lives in the dingy part of town with her terminally underemployed dad (Harry Dean Stanton). She works at a record store with eccentric Ionia (Annie Potts) and is considered a misfit at her uppity high school, but somehow she rises above them all. Her oddball best friend, Duckie (Jon Cryer), is hopelessly in love with her, so he causes trouble for her romantic pursuits. When local rich kid Blaine (Andrew McCarthy) develops a fascination with her, they go out on a date together. Visiting the home bases of each social clique, they are basically ridiculed for their audacity to date one another. When Blaine eventually asks the delighted Andie to the prom, he is threatened by his rich friend Steff (James Spader). The romance versus high school social politics finally culminates at the big night of the prom.

For all unaware of the argument...When Andie was 14 years old, her mother walked out and abandoned Andie and her father. Here, 4 years later, Andies father was in a depression. She was trying to snap him out of it.

It really breaks my heart when a parent neglects their child.
My little brothers dad (my stepdad) neglected him when he was 4.
He is 17 now and I always look at him and want to tear up thinking his dad didn't want him.
Andie was really the Caretaker the past Three Years. It's not fair. She had to Cook, Clean, and make sure that the Bills were Paid on time. God knows where Jack would be without her. Also, why are some people so scared to be responsible.
Some people can just shut down, because they're not mentally equipped to handle certain situations. And when those people are family members, we help them because they're family--it's love. It does suck that she had to be an adult while still only a teenager, but that's what we have to do sometimes, because if the tables were turned, they'd do the same for us.
And then she mentioned that she was 14 and he was 50.... and she knew it when she was 5, that is a lot for a kid to live with. Please people, don't have kids just because "its what one is supposed to do" or "everybody has them" or "I like babies" or "my parents want grandparents" imagine if you didn't love that kid? That is a lot for a kid to live and deal with.

Yeah, I think it's really sad that not only did Ringwald's career decline in the following years but so did her reputation, to the point that it's pretty much social taboo to admit to being a fan of hers or even to recognize the fact that she was a talented performer.

Everybody has failed this poor girl in this film and it’s sad.
I love how he lets go of his anger in the moment and hugs his daughter.
I know he boozes bc he misses his wife. But he never walked out in his daughter. Hes just sad. It's been 4 yrs andie is right he has to move on. He is probably esp depressed bc he mentions andie has a scholarship to college so soon she will be moving on & he is terrified of being all alone. Harry dean stanton is a really good actor. He was in the godfather part 2 for godsakes lol. Everyone in cast in the godfathers are great actors!
Booze for him is a coping mechanism. He also knows that everythign that Andie achieved was on her hard work. She couldn't depend on him for a D@mn! In The Book Version, he realized he had to "Man Up". There was so much repair work he let fall to the wayside but he figured life is too short to waste, or as Andy Dufresne said in The Shawshank Redemption "Get Busy Living, Or Get Busy Trying".

Listen, I love this scene just as much as the next person, but it's not fair. Andie had to cook, clean, and pay bills so she and her father could survive. A teenager.
Yeah and that's the point. Jack is a broken man, and he's lost sight of who he needs to be. He's trapped in grief, but he's being selfish. Andie desperately needs him to snap out of it and be there for her. She's exasperated, but she loves him. This goes on in a million homes every day, that's why this scene is so affecting.
And Andie didn’t love Duckie back. Full circle.

because she was my wife..and I loved her..and I married her...and I had a baby with her..and she abandoned me. That's why I can't forget her 18 year old Andy who's never been in a serious relationship once in her whole life.
+lolitah028 Maybe he didn't stay on top of his Business. Working, Drinking Heavily, who knows but there were always two sides to every story. I wished Andie's Mother had sent a Letter explaining why she left.
She blurted out "why can't you just forget her?" in frustration, but she amended it and said, essentially, that he needed to accept that she wasn't coming back. She was arguing on his behalf that he needed to move on with his own life; not be in suspended animation. And she was right.
Dude you totally missed the point of this entire scene, and probably the entire movie. Shame
She, as his daughter, loves him so much, that should be enough of a force to continue striving ahead. they both loved her so much but he has to move on for the sake of leading a healthy lifestyle
You don’t have to be in a serious relationship to know what love, self love and respect is and isn’t, love comes in different forms and Andy proves this to us in the movie by demonstrating it, you can’t change the past nor people who were in it but you can change the future and how you decide to let things impact you and the way you want to experience your life

I don't understand how Andi has a scholarship to high school. It's not like it's a private school. And she tells the principal she's lucky she's able to go to that high school. It's just public school.
It's a rich school. Andie is very smart. She may have been poor but because of her intelligence she was accepted into the rich school

When Andie confronted him about "Missing The Appointment" it reminded me of when Denise Huxtable "deliberately" forgot to put in the application for the Home in Rhode Island, NY. She admitted she was scared to leave home and be alone with Olivia while Martin was at Sea with no Family or Friends nearby. Sadly enough we've seen shows where people are so stuck in the past they can't move on. Roseanne, Dallas, Dynasty, Degrassi: The Next Generation and even The Soap Opera Another World had characters like that.

There are always two sides to every story. Jack reminds me of Luke Casteel in the Heaven Series or even Trip Fontaine in The Virgin Suicides, can't move on to the present because they are still so stuck in the past.

It's the greatest quote from HDS, so funny!
He was also in The Godfather 2 as one of Frankie "Five Fingers" Pentangeli who lived on The Army Base who found Frankie after he killed himself.

This sxene hit hard. My parenta seperated while i was in middle school. Loved with my dad. But he was falling behind on bills. My mom had her business. And everyone at sxhool knew everything. I wanted to juatbe invisible. Moved with her when I aaw ahe cared after about a month to herself. During that time family threw shit in my face about her and made sure I didnt feel wanted. So dad's thar try. I salute you. But when you hear ugly things that already hurt becauae you saw everything too. Shit their moutha and if she comes back move far.

She didn't die. She was a deadbeat who abandoned her family, hence the line "she didn't love us back"

All the great actors loved harry dean Stanton. He was in the godfather 2 nuff said. The best actors were in those 2 godfather films. Here he breaks my heart " because I love her " sometimes moms leave too. Very sad. Kind of like kramer vs Kramer only u can see why joanna the mom left. Her husband didnt pay attention to her or their son just his career. She desperately wanted to work having gone to college & had a great job in fashion magazines. Her husband refused to let her work bc of paying for a babysitter but their son was in 1st grade. In the end she got a job & made more money then her husband. She explained in the court scenes she loved being a mom but was very artistic& needed a creative outlet just not having the identity if a wife & mom. I dont know why andis mom left? It appears the dad became a drunk after she left .
