  • I upgraded the spring on the rear shock of my Honda CRF250L dual sport. This is a step by step video of how I did it from start to finish including every step. I discovered a new way to do the most difficult step and if you're here for that you can skip directly to it at time stamp 03:40. The stock spring rate is 9.5 kg/mm. I'm 6'4" and weigh 280 pounds and the recommended spring rate for me is 14 kg/mm. I got the spring online at CRF's Only. I tried to swap out the spring myself using the MacPherson strut tool and i couldn't get at the nut need to free up the washer. I had quite a struggle finding a mechanic/shop that would help me get the old spring off and the new spring on. In the end, I found Brent at ProTune Suspension in Wellston, Ohio and he helped me out. If you're doing it yourself, I noticed some of the tools Brent used are available online but after seeing him do it, I realized his knowledge, skills and experience made all the difference.

    super glue works good for holding the nut in the wrench.

    Hey man! Fantastic video. I have a 2018 Crf250L myself that I’m upgrading the rear suspension on. Im wondering, did the spacer some with the spring on crfsonly? I found the eibach spring on Amazon. But crfsonly no longer sells these, so I can’t find the spacer! Any chance you know the measurements with the spacer?

      The spacer came in the box with the spring when I bought it from CRFsonly. The outside of the box says that the spring is a 9.0 X 2.25” 14.3 kg… don’t know the measurements of the spacer and can’t measure it now that it’s on the bike. Justin at CRFsOnly might be able to help

    i have the same bike (2017). you said the spring will now be more capable of holding your weight. how much do you weigh? i'm 240 and don't ride off-road yet. i'm going to start but just curious if you think the spring was worth the upgrade? i don't plan on doing anything crazy but don't want to bottom out every time i go over something. have you or will you upgrade anything else suspension wise?

      Definitely worth the upgrade! I weigh 285. It is WAY LESS “squishy”. I haven’t been off road since the upgrade. Hoping to go today and I’ll make a video. Thanks for watching 💪🏼

    did you do anything to the forks? Did you consider replacing the shock and spring?

    • @arideinthecountry
      @arideinthecountry  Před rokem +1

      I haven’t done anything to the forks yet. I’m considering the Race Tech High Performance Fork Spring kit for the front, but haven’t done it yet. The left fork comes from the factory with only a dampener and no spring. The right fork has both a dampener and spring. This kit provides a spring for the empty left fork.

      I considered changing the shock and spring but the shock is so expensive and I thought I would start with the spring and see how it goes.

    I have a 2015 250LD (the Taiwanese model) and my mechanic advised that I don’t do this (no reason, just said “not really recommended) and is obviously pushing for whole new shock.

      Interesting. Obviously I think changing the shock as well would be better but the spring change made a huge difference for me. I was trying to contain the cost. Thanks for watching.

    You should have greased everything on your suspension while you had it apart

      Thanks for watching man! Actually, I DID grease it up using Lucas Oil Red Tacky grease, I just didn’t show it! Probably should have.
