  • Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to take down the previous version of this build video. Here is the re-edited version. Sorry for the confusion.
    Video was originally Aired on Mar 6, 2023
    Today on the WorkBench I am building the 1998 edition of AMT/ERTL’s 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 454. As you could see in the thumbnail this kit is molded in green. I like the color of the plastic on this particular kit and I wasn’t going to paint his car. I was just going to add the decals and clear over the body. So, when I shot the clear coat on it I got a huge surprise!!
    Even after test spraying the clear on a piece of sprue, this clear coat of choice began having a feast on the bare plastic. Well, that set me back about two weeks because now I had to strip the clear off and start fresh. Well, everything survived this catastrophe except for the hood. After all of this mess I was now forced to lay down a fresh coat of paint on the body.
    Watch the video to see how this all turned out!
    I hope that you enjoy watching this video as much as I did building the kit.

    So glad you asked. I actually bought this kit for the detailed suspension, which goes back at least to the 60's continuing to the last frame cars of the 90's.

      Interesting, it does have a lot of detail. It's probably the most I've seen in a kit in a long time.

    Thank you much for the info. I'll give it a shot. I'm starting to get back into building more models since I'm an old man now and can't do much. Happy modeling. God bless.

      You're very welcome! I'm getting up in years as well and having been diagnosed with cancer last year it really has taken its toll on my daily activities. It just lets me know that I am mortal and can't do the same things that I used to do when I was 30... I hope that my advice works well for you!

    That is a cool kit. 20 years just waiting for you to get to it. That's classic. The end procuct came out awesome!! I fell your paint of the clear not working with the plastic, I had the same thing happen to a kit I was working on. Take care!!

      Thank you! I really like the color of the plastic, and that's rare for me. I was quite surprised that the clear did that. I had tested it on another part of the kit with zero reaction prior to spraying the body. Oh well, it turned out really good in the end. Thanks for watching.

    This Monte Carlo SS 454 has been sitting on a shelf in my closet at least 20 years. I also have the original monkeys mobile never ever been open. I've had that for 25 30 years

      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 6 měsíci

      I bought this one in 1998 while I was living in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This has been sitting for almost 25 years before I got around to building it. I can't tell you what the oldest kit in my collection is but most of the stash was purchased in the 1994 to 2019 time frame. A lot of them still have their original price stickers on them and most of those are in the $4 - $7 price range. I have two different Monkee Mobiles myself. I can't remember exactly but I want to say one of them is a Monogram or MPC and the other is an AMT kit. Not sure of the manufacture dates are on either of those. I generally don't look at that information until I am sitting down and shooting video of that particular kit.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 6 měsíci

      It's most likely the very same kit. Most of these were made in white plastic. I'm not sure if it was a special run for Walmart or what the situation was but I bought this kit from Walmart many years ago (over 20 years ago). They can still be found on places like Ebay but you mostly see them molded in white. I only wish that I could have just cleared the body because I really liked the color. Thanks for looking up my video. Good Luck on your build!

    Where to start? I remember this model, the 454 is nicely detailed. TUBE GLUE that takes me back 😊 Where did you get those little pink claps from? When you piss-can the parts still on the trees isn't that a pain in the rump to touch them up? (MODEL CAR)(MAN CAVE)

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 9 měsíci

      Well, I build old school style. So that includes the tube glue. The little clamps that I use I picked up a local Dollar Tree some time ago. I think that they sell them at Hobby Lobby also. Generally I try not to topcoat my parts while they are still on the trees but I will primer them like that. It makes it a little easier and a bit faster to primer the parts on the trees. Usually there isn't a huge spot of bare plastic that is left on the parts after removing them from the trees and those spots are easily covered by the topcoat. I used to remove everything from the trees first but in some situations that can be more of a hassle than putting up with the little bare spots.

      I try to give out pointers while I am building but I have found that when I do that the video becomes very long. Kind of like this Saturdays video. It is the longest one that I have ever uploaded to my channel. Thanks for the input. Any tips on painting models by hand? I don't have a spray setup. I do everything by hand. Any tips on that?

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 6 měsíci

      I do about 90% of my builds with either a rattle can or airbrush. The parts that get brush painted are the usual, the engine/transmission, exhaust and some of the interior pieces. However, all of the parts get a coat of primer before any topcoat is applied. This method works well with all of the acrylic craft paint that I use in my builds. Craft paint doesn't like to stick to bare plastic at all. So, there's that. I always use horsehair brushes for hand painting. I don't like nylon bristle brushes at all because they have the tendency to leave more brush stroke marks in the paint than horsehair brushes.Have a variety of brushes with various tips for doing large or thin areas. If you have shaky hands and you want straight lines pick up some Washi Tape to mask an area off before painting.You can also achieve some pretty nice results by using Sharpie markers and gel pens on areas like trim around the dashboard and door panels. I hope this helps.

    I have a quick question for you, do you find yourself. You have to scrape the paint that needs to be glued to other paint

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 6 měsíci

      Well, I find that bare plastic to bare plastic has the best bond. A layer of paint will interfere with that bond. Unless, of course, you're using some sort of CA glue.

    were did you get the green paint

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I bought the paint from Hobby Lobby. It is Folk Art Acrylic Craft paint called Forest Green and I threw in a couple of drops of Gloss Black to darken the color just a bit. I love using craft paints because I can custom mix almost any color that I want. I then thinned it about 50/50 using distilled water and then applied it through a Paasche Model H airbrush at 19 psi. I hope that this information helps you. Thanks for the sub and for watching my video!

    How you doing? I have a question for you. I'm a fan of yours. You are some work. My question is I'm doing a 1970 roadrunner. The undercarriage is yellow with black trim but it looks dirty yellow. How do I make the yellow look dirty?

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 5 měsíci

      I am doing well. As far as making your yellow to look dirty... Have you tried lightly dry brushing maybe some brown or gray acrylic paint over the yellow. I haven't done anything like that in a very long time but if memory serves it may work for that. I would test it out on something before applying it to your Roadrunner. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    ok, the obvious question is what happened (generically if you can't name names) that they forced you to take down the original video?

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 10 měsíci

      Readers digest version.... Hmm... Well, it all started back a few months ago when I found a particular song that I really liked. This song was listed on a particular CZcams channel that advertised it as free background music for CZcams videos, as long as I included their disclaimer in the video description box. So, I downloaded it to use in my videos. Turns out that the song wasn't as free as the advertising proclaimed and after using it in 40 of my videos the "copyright holders" began placing "copyright claims" on some of the videos, six of them so far. I wasn't forced per se to take down these videos but CZcams had made them ineligible for monetization. I started looking into how many videos I had used it in and discovered that I had used it in 40 out of 51 videos and all of them were now possibly facing the same fate. It was then that I made the decision to go back through each of those 40 videos, starting with the first six they made claims on and remove the offensive song then re-post the videos one by one. It wasn't CZcams's fault per se. It was mine for not taking the time to really dig deep into the extra fine print involved with the use of the songs that they make available. I went back to the source and began to really dig into all of the associated documentation and found a tiny clause buried deep within their site that this was a one time use for free. Any further use would require a license to be purchased for each time that it was used. That price is $26 for each use. Well, it doesn't take a mathematical genius to figure out how much money was owed. I don't know about your financial status but I certainly don't have $1014 just laying around. So, this is the only real solution that I could come up with. Going through the video editor available through CZcams resulted in replacing the offending song with another while in turn removing all voice over that was in place. resulting in a three minute and seventeen second silence or just music in a section of the video that you could clearly tell that I was once speaking in. To totally and correctly restore the video to its original state I have to do this. So, in the end, as I bring the re-edited version back online I will be taking the original version offline. It sucks... but this is the only way that I can still have my videos up for viewing and keeping the very small amount of money that I make off of them to myself. To give you an idea of how much I make from them... I have been monetized since April 1, 2023. Two days ago I received my first $100 payday from YT. I'm not really into this for the money but I'm not going to just give it to someone that false advertises "Free background music for your videos" and then hides their fine print several layers down. I hope that this gives you an idea of what the last month has been like for me on top of recently being diagnosed with stage three cancer and all that implies.

    You guys should show the interior of the model before you put it together. I'm just an avid builder. I'm not very Good at it but I've been doing it for a long time. I don't have all the tools that you have

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 6 měsíci

      I try to show what I am doing with the interiors as I go through the build but I don't always include this in the final build video. Mostly because I get to building and forget to turn on the camera or in the essence of keeping the video from becoming boring I don't include that portion. By tools, I assume that you are referring to the actual tools and not "tools" as in experience. Most of my tools that I have accumulated throughout the years have been bought at the Dollar Tree stores that I visit. Other tools have been bought from places like Hobby Lobby. You don't have to have the absolute best "whatever tool" to get great results. I use a lot of tweezers, cotton swabs and toothpicks to build my kits. To tell you the truth, interiors are my achilles heal. I'm not as good at them as I would like to be and I have been building on and off for over 50 years now. I will try to show the interior building more often in the future.
