- A feature-length documentary, Kvadrat explores the realities of techno DJing, using the example of Andrey PUSHKAREV, a Russian DJ recognized worldwide. Filmed as a hybrid between a road-movie and a music video, the film not only illustrates the festive atmosphere of techno night clubs, but also reveals the lesser known side of this profession: weeks of track selection, lengthy travel, difficult schedule. The film suggests to reconsider the stereotype of a popular musician, to find out whether the artist is happy, to ponder what’s most important to him and his audience? Shot in Switzerland, France, Hungary, Romania and Russia, the film omits the typical documentary elements: no interviews, no explanatory voice-over, no facts, no figures. The visuals and the techno music replace them, leaving the detailed interpretation to the viewer.

I have watched this literally dozens of times. At this point, the music and scenes have become something like meditation for me. Kudos to the producer, the director/cinematographer, and our hard-working protagonist!

Unconventional, but hey, we wanted to experiment! And, even before showing it to anyone, my criteria for "green or red light" was "can I watch this film over and over again without hating it"?

I have to say that Kvadrat never gets old, it was very inspiring for me from 2014 and watched it at least a douzen times till now. It made me start buying vinyl and learn to mix on vinyl. It also made me realize the struggle of moving a growing collection (1200+) if changing homes haha.

what a wonderfully calming, almost meditative peice -it has an almost ASMR quality about it. I consider it one of my greatest accomplishments that my music made on to this work of art. When I hear the other tunes and see the tracklist, I must admit I there is a certain self depricating feeling of like, 'what the hell does my music have any business being even mensioned in such classics' that I dont think Ill ever get over.. but, for whatever I think about it, there it is :). so much incredible deep-tech on this. Incredible work I will always treasure being a small part of.
I really like how long and boring it is. I mean the constant routine of home/travel/club/travel (picking up baggage on every case of stairs hit me hard for some reason lol). I think this movie perfectly shows what it was intended to show. Would watch again.

Just finished. Man that was beautiful. Absolutely LOVED those long shots of Andrey walking through the airport or just down an empty street. Made the whole thing feel so raw and natural. Track selection was great too :) much respect to both Andrey and Anatoly. I'm so glad I found this gem, will definitely watch again

Perfect music, perfect description of a life style, and of course excelent takes and images. I'm trying to find what is the real way to be a Dj, i want someday, hopefully, be a good one, and this Doc, inspire me to be it.

I'm about 45 minutes into it, so far it's dope, especially the very beginning where the plane is going into the clouds. I'm just starting out producing techno and house music myself with synthesizers, drum machines and all that, I'm glad people still appreciate that style of music and still play it. I lived in Kolín, Czech Republic for almost eight years until fairly recently, man I miss European life and the CLUBS! I'm moving to Brâlia, Romania this fall and I'm damn sure taking my gear with me. Producing music has been a lifelong dream of mine, who knows, maybe he'll be playing something of mine before too long😌. Anyhow, enough about me, great doco so far, I really envy this dude! really beautifully put together! a joy for me to watch - I had the pleasure of travelling to St.Petersburg on two occasions to play at Club Mama, a large theatre where they held a rave and an underground bunker nightclub with Lena Popova and Karri O from Helsinki many years ago and this really brings me back to the alleyways and subways of Leningrad. I also dig that this film about the "routine" of travelling for your music - touring can be so tedious and rewarding. great soundtrack and amazing film!
great. It made me discover Andrey and since then I've been listening him non stop.
This was brilliant, on all fronts. Since dub techno is my perpetual soundtrack on business trips, much of this film resonated with me. Indeed, it almost felt like I was the one constantly in transit. Funny thing is, though, that I nearly always have my headphones on, whereas Pushkarev prefers to be away from the music while he can.

Love this, seen it plenty of times. And i so agree regarding day parties! Its just a great idea, and i think it would be good for the physical and mental health for a lot of djs, and for the crowd as well.
Dont get me wrong, i love an old fashion rave in the forest. But i never got why techno, which is the sound of the future, has to be enjoyed during the night?

go to almost any small electronic festival, and you'll find that during the day, crowds are pretty sparse. You need a lot of people to keep it full all day. For some reason, there is some connection people have with techno and the night time. Not many people show up to dance before 11pm or so.
Totally agree, techno, house and all their off shoots can and should be enjoyed during the day too. Berlin has done this for years now.
As for festivals - leave those to the type of people who make heart shapes with their hands

The conversation that the guys have (around 37:00 mark) about the state of techno and the growing trend of daytime dances was really interesting. Also, I noticed that there were some icons of Russian Orthodox saints in the window sill behind them. I found it interesting that even now people in Russia are pretty religious (I guess)? Even young techno DJs!
The icons’ do not belong to the DJ, but to the long-haired host of the tea-discussion sitting on the left.
Still, like any other static society, Russia is very religious (only names change, pro forma: Perun, Jesus, Stalin, Jesus again…)
