    I agree. I'm not easily influenced and I am not surprised at the amount of snake oil salesmen I see. What's sad is some of these influencer weaponize the desperation of people looking for work and for the people that are in the trenches like myself looking to transition, use the techniques you learn from cybersecurity to navigate what's good for you or not.

  • @Cyber2a
    @Cyber2a Před měsícem +10

    I agree. I self studied for my Sec+ while having a family and working full-time. It took me longer than I anticipated but I did it using a book, YT videos, and practice exams. Now I'm trying to learn the skills that will assist with the career transition into the GRC space. I got ATS resume tips and LinkedIn profile suggestions from YT videos and AI. So yes, I try to learn as much as I can for free before I dish out any money.
    I'm not against someone packaging their experience and knowledge to help guide those getting into the space but it should be at a reasonable fee. Some are charging 3 to 5 thousand for their courses, so if they influence enough people we are providing them a hefty passive income.

    Took a Long Break From Cyber, Your Points are all Accurate. You aren’t pessimistic at all. Truth Tellers are usually Labeled as such. Cyber isn’t easy nor is quick and easy to accomplish. Also job market is very difficult to enter, Easiest way is to Join the military, they give you the teaching & security clearance.

    Already been through this with a grc influencer that was selling a GRC academy. They were selling the course for 7 grand and I got on a call with them where they got my back story and attempted to use that to leverage the opportunities they could give me and when I attempted to take time to decide on whether the academy was for me, they harassed me via text and phone saying that I should do this for my kids and that I wouldn't be able to break onto cyber security without them. Crazy expirience man.

    I don't usually comment but I think it is very important that this video reaches people who are starting out in this industry so that they do it out of passion and not motivated by money. Because the scammers are following exactly the same methods to scam people that are used with trading or investing. You know, a luxury car, a dream mansion and a paradisiacal beach when it is not even likely that a CISO will work that way due precisely to the responsibility that a job like that has.
    With this I do not want to discourage young people from thinking that it is not possible to earn enough money, both in the US and in Europe in this sector, but like everything good in this life it takes time and you have to let the fruits grow to be able to enjoy its flavor.

    • @collinsinfosec
      @collinsinfosec  Před měsícem +1

      I agree with what you are saying about luxury cars, mansions, etc. It's a lot of showcasing and not a lot of doing.
      It's interesting you mention passion in cybersecurity.
      My thoughts on passion in cybersecurity have changed over the course of my tenure so far in this industry. At first, I thought you have to have a passion to be successful. I have realized it's more about leveraging what you are good at, finding your niche, and putting in the work. The money can follow. Often times, pursuing your passion can lead to burnout, as passions come and go throughout life. But being able to reliably be consistent, put in the work, and be dedicated to your "craft" can help you thrive to pursue other passions in the free time. I still think having a passion is helpful. Interested to hear your perspective.

    Part of the problem with this field 100% is cost. Not just cost, but time studying. Tech burnout is a real thing.
    I tried Coursera for a bit, and it was fairly reasonable.
    Ran into issues with a few of the VM labs and that made me not want to continue courses there.
    I was able to take what i learned and apply it to real world practice, so that accounts for something.
    Looking at maybe getting back into a helpdesk role to pay for courses/certs later, but it hasn't been easy finding work.

    One huge problem with courses is that you often don't really know what you're getting until you've already paid money and in some cases the refund process is hard. With that said I think 300-600 for a course that has hands on milestones is worth it if for no other reason than to give you something to speak on and show in an interview. What's not worth it is the courses that are extremely vague or that try to push you towards buying another course that promises to have more.

    I just got a IT manager job for 85k but somehow I guess the influencer space makes you believe that any strides you make it doesn’t matter if you aren’t immediately at the 6 figure mark and you aren’t in the perfect cybersecurity job! i go one further: I only buy training material if the free content taught me something discrete. filtering the bad content made by worse content creators, unf, is hard for me to pay off, because I think the internet should work well as a basic proposition.
