- You asked, so here it is! A colouring tutorial showing you how to use blending solutions with coloured pencil. I've used Zest-it in this video which you can find on Amazon and in lots of Art Supply stores. Happy blending!

Loved the introduction to blending stumps and solution. Xxxx
I have no idea if you really read your comments or not but, I would like to truly say Thank You for the wonderful work you have put into all the videos and books. I am 56 and have not colored a thing for years (ex: my kids are in their 30's and we colored way back then). These great books have opened up a new and color filled world for me. Again thank you so very much for all the hard work.

Totally Agree With You
Lovely video. For my blending solution I use Pip Seymour (hardly any smell at all) in the uk, (heard good reports on the zest it brand) and poured some into a screw top lid. Inside the lid I stuck a piece of kitchen sponge. Been going for years now. Just wanted to share. Hope that's ok.
Just received MAGICAL JUNGLE as a gift from my son and granddaughter. Having fun coloring in it and have picked up many helpful tips watching this fantastic tutorial. Go girl.
Beautiful! Thank you Johanna!
Thanks for the tips on blending. Your work is amazing :)
Joanna u so talented! God is in details. even ur choice of this cute printed dress is demonstating it
this is a great product, not costly here in Australia and easy to obtain. Works a treat!
thank johanna for another great video
I loooove coloring with zest-it! it's so easy to get rid of the white of the paper by using it. it's a little difficult to get here in Germany though, but as the coloring mania takes over more and more this may change! thank you Johanna xxx
Hallo! I live in Germany too and would like to know if you found something else here that is easier to buy than zest-it?
I loooooove Johanna's books
Johanna, I love all your Coloring Books! The cost of the Zest-it here is prohibitive! I use Derwent Inktense pencils and the Dove Blender pen, which comes with a bottle of blending solution and several extra nibs for a very reasonable price. It works wonderfully. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I still find it hard to believe you are over 30 years old, married and a mommy....you look like a teenager! :-) Good on you!!
I love coloring
Wow i really wish i could color like you Johanna!
This is a great video. Thank you x
❤love your Chanel and your books are amazing xx
If you want your pages to last a long time, DON'T USE BABY OIL. It will cause the pages to yellow over time and it won't look pretty. It's especially a bummer if you use expensive pencils like polychromos because they're meant to be lightfast but the baby oil defeats the purpose of that.
Thanks for the good tip!
stinky i only have oil:(
Thanks for the tip, I was just about to use it as ran out of Dorso oil. Think I'll try Zest it instead
I am new in coloring, would you please explain what is BABY OIL?
@@monicabentodemello1543 like actual baby oil, Johnson and Johnson baby oil.
This inspired me to get your book Magical Jungle :D I'm not a great color artist, but this is inspiring and will help to make me better
Cool! Amazing!))
Wow, so beautyfull😍❤️
Ergo soft pencils are lovely .. beautiful.. I wish they did more colours in the range
This is so helpful
very helpful!
I love al your tips Johanna.i have good selection of your colouring books and want to get the full set eventually. Do you have a Christmas colouring book please. Also please keep the videos coming as they are so good and I need lots of ideas. Thank you xxx
I'm a huge fan of your work! Can't wait for your new book to come out! Your books have become a great way as a coping mechanism for my depression and anxiety! Can I buy your books and supplies from your website?
Thanks for the tips and demonstration. I have recently purchased dove pen blender. Have you heard of it? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing.
Becareful using solvents, I tried them and they gave me migraine headaches. I avoid using any chemicals inside. Coloring is meant to be relaxing, not toxic to your health. They make blending pencils and paper stumps that do almost as well. Unless you're a professional artist you don't need chemicals to color in coloring books. :D
I read, I believe, all of the comments and didn't see where anyone mentioned using glycerin as a blending fluid. I learned this from Jennifer Stay's site and it is a vegetable based product, and priced VERY reasonably. I find it in the pharmacy department at Walmart for less than $4.00, but I understand there are many other places that sell it.
Hola Johanna. Soy una fans incondicional de tus libros. Tengo un problema: no entiendo inglés, y te pido, por favor, que cuando hables de un producto concreto, nos pongas el enlace de amazon, o cualquier tienda, para poderlo comprar, y saber para qué sirve. Muchas gracias. No dejes nunca de pintar!!
I love your Christmas book. I loved coloring them. But in my book 37 pages are not dark enough to color. I hope it was just my book and other books are okay. I look forward to getting more of your books.
here in philippines you never found an item gamsol and blending stump/blending pencil in art supply stores... its so hard to look for it..
Which Staedtler pencils are they?
😍😍😍😍
I have such trouble in coloring the antlers of a deer in a page in your Christmas book. Can anyone recommend a tutorial that specifically addresses this issue? Thanks so much- Joy
There must be somewhere to buy Zest It in the US, there seems to be different kinds of liquid. Can you give me the name of the one you use that has the sponge in the container. I would really like some of that. Not too keen on breathing in the Gamsol. Thanks, love you
Can you please turn your sound up? Thank you very much Johanna. Your books are wonderful to color:)
Linda k I'm hard of hearing and just use small headphones when I watch things on you tube.
Great video. I love your tutorials.
Does someone tell me which kind of markets Johanna uses.
Rosa Rangel she doesn't use markers in this video. She uses colored pencils. She uses staedtler pencils, always has, always will
Can I still use this technique when I use Watercolor Pencil?
Where do I get the supplies that you talked about in this video?
So I can use baby oil if I don’t have zest it?
nice
It would be great that you can zoom in. Is hard to see how you blend. Thanks for this video ☺️
Não sei nada inglês...por favor me diz o q é esse pote para molhar o esfuminho...obg
Thanks for such an informative tutorial. I checked out the Zest It and it is quite pricey. Might there be something similar and doesn't cost as much? Also, could you please speak a little clearer, I'm old and have a hard time listening to accents.
I think you are such an amazing artist and have created such awesome coloring books, thanks again! Janet T
If you're in the US, use gamsol. You can find it on Amazon, or at art stores, or hobby stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby. Should cost about $8 for a small bottle, which lasts forever because you don't need much. Odorless mineral spirits will work too. You can find that at wal mart in the hardware area near the painting stuff. Zest it is actually ILLEGAL TO IMPORT. I tried to purchase some, and customs confiscated it. I guess people buy it from Amazon so it's purchased domestically, and it costs a lot, or are lucky not to be caught by customs. Hope that helps
the ascetics are fabulous tho
Where did you get your blending solution from? Was it from either hochanda, crafters companion or create and craft? ( if it wasn't any of them then they're all craft work TV programs that are live)
Jaden Christie google it!
Which book is the page ur working on from? I have all of ur books but don't recognize that one!
Yvette Williams did you not see the cover when she showed you the book? It's magical jungle. Pay a bit more attention!
a.c.moore has it?
Johanna, I am new to the color pencil world. I currently use Prismacolor pencils. I have only used their blending pencil and wasn't very impressed with how it blended. Do you feel like this option works better at blending your work?
Hi! What did you not like about it? I am new as well and have bought Prismacolour pencils but I used the derwent blending pencil as prismas are hard to come by where I live. I too don't like it! I find it rather scratchy and hard and it doesn't give a nice blending result (looks over-rubbed/scratched and gives a dull look or as though there is a haze/bloom over the area I have used it on! I prefer the result I get from just using the pencils themselves - looks more vibrant and natural. I was wondering if it was due to my using a different brand of blender pencils and am considering buying the Prisma blending pencil. Please let me know so I don't waste more money. When I watched videos of the blending pencil it looks like it achieves great results! Cheers!
Tim Bredow you can use vaseline to blend if you dont want to use a solvent. I use vaseline with my prismas and it works great, I have the prisma blender pencil but never ever use it. Im not a fan of it either
Tim, beware about using vaseline. I saw it mentioned as a solvent solution on Johanna Basford's video ( ie Johanna herself) and then there was a comment posted not to use it as it turns your work yellow. Amy Wood, has this happened to you? PS it might even be in the comments on this video. I am using a pop up box at the moment so can't check.
hello¡vaseline is good?
hey Jo ! How are called the four white pencils ? where can I find it for buying?
thanks Alison ! mwahhh..:)
I've heard about this but have never tried it, thats great that they sell it in a sponge! They sell a lot of solvents called zest it so I thought I would mention that I assume you are using Zest It: Pencil Blend?
Than you for doing this do not run the tips of the blending stumps
awwww baby bump
Is she pregnant? Cool!! :-)
Elisabeth
I've been sharpening my blending stumps with a sharpener...
GeminiStargazer Nothing wrong with that! It's just paper (or thin cardboard in some cases) after all :) great idea. Good to invest in a jumbo pencil sharpener if you use the jumbo blending stumps too as I'm sure they'd fit just to erase the colour & sharpen (& likely a bit less faff with the sandpaper). I'd never thought of doing it this way. Thank you! x
I use sandpaper, or giant emery boards, for mine. I think sharpeners would be blunted by the stumps after a while. I hope this helps.
Is that Magical Jungle!
Yvette Williams that's such a dumb question! She showed you the book. Go back and watch the video. Jeez, people don't pay attention!!!
tammynwes You are extremely rude
I didn't know that there is 'blending technique' in using colored pencils. I actually just put them together like crayons.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot my account password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
@Remington Stetson instablaster :)
@Stephen Marvin thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Stephen Marvin it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass :D
@Remington Stetson you are welcome =)
Juanna Besfo'rd you're cool
sound is very low but great stuff
Lástima que no tengan traducción , no entiendo el ingles
Zest it is hard to get in America, I suggest gamsol, Stampers anonymous has a kit on Amazon that comes with blending stumps (I linked to it below). When it comes to blending stumps there are different grades; grey off white and white. The best kids are the bright white blending stumps that are made in Taiwan. The stumps that come in the kit mentioned above are the white ones made in Taiwan. Also a good fine grit nail file is a great alternative to sandpaper or those sandpaper sheet blocks to clean up and sharpen the stumps back to a nice point and get the color off. Hope this is helpful for those whom love in the US. God Bless. amzn.com/B005P1UZEA
I'm in the US and was able to get my hands on Zest It from Jackson's Art Supply. There are different formulations of Zest It, so if you want to use it with colored pencil, you specifically want the "Zest It Pencil Blend".
wldflwr77 yes! I ordered zest it from Jackson art too but jacksons is located in England not in the US. I like zest it because of its smell but gamsol was easier and faster for me to get let alone cheaper. On another note Ive also tried and like blending markers specific for pencils (not blending markers for inks or watercolors like the Stampin up bender pen or tombow blender pen). There is a newish blending pen that has a solvent inside that breaks down the wax that take the need of using a stump which needs constantly dipping into zest it or gamsol. If I can remember the name (I'll go check my studio) I'll reply back with it, it's pretty good but doesn't take away ,y needs for a blending stump entirely but is good for smaller areas.
It's called finesse. Here is the link I found for a 3 pack on Amazon.

I have the prismacolor blender marker which for me never worked for me with colored pencils, not even once as properly or as well as gamsol or zest it does. The blender linked above works as well as the gamsol and zest it but the only issue that could arise is blending larger areas and the quality of paper. So being sure not to scrub the paper over and over which like any marker will cause pulling but that can be fixed with a rubbing with an eraser, a bone folder, blending pencil or a combination of them (a fixative will add texture back to allow for more layers of pencil) again depending on the paper.

are you sponsored by staedtler
IF YOU ARE IN THE US, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET ZEST IT (unless it is very expensive). If you're in the US, use GAMSOL or ODORLESS MINERAL SPIRITS. You can get these product from Amazon, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and even wal mart for around $8-10 for a small bottle, which lasts forever, because you don't need much. Zest it is too expensive from Amazon and importation is prohibited by customs from other countries. Also, do not use baby oil or Vaseline if you want to keep your work. It yellows over time (a matter of months) and can leave greasy spots on the paper.
Love the tutorials but the music is too loud to hear you.
Kkkkk
