- This video shows in excruciating detail how to remove the instrument panel from the dashboard of a 1997 Toyota Camry. It shows how to remove and clean the plastic cover, how to test and replace the indicator lights, how to disconnect and connect the cable harness. Sorry, no instruction on how to set back the odometer.
This video was posted 5 years ago but I hope you see this. Thank you for this video it really helps. You're still have the best video out there in 2021.
Yes, I look at every single comment and try to respond. Comments like yours make it all worthwhile (that and the monthly check from Google Adsense, lol). Thank you for taking the time to comment. Happy motoring!
Yes I totally agree this is helping with so much! I don’t know much about cars but super informative vids like these make things so much easier🥰
I got a ‘97 camry as my first car. Named her Camy, love her to death!! But unfortunately I’m having the same issue with my dashboard lights. Thank you so much for posting this video with so much detail. Much thanks from an inexperienced 18 year old girl!!!
Thank you for the kind comment. I hope you're able to make the repair easily. Happy motoring!
Thanks for the video...Replaced all instrument lights with LED. What a difference it made at night. Even my son noticed the improvement and his Navy buddies want to revive their old rides to LED.
No way! They have LEDs for that now? I would totally do that. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Great video on removing the cluster brother!! But instead of having someone with little experience hooking up a loose wire to the positive on the battery terminal, just use a meter in ohms to see if there is a open, or high resistance. Basic meters are cheap these days, and it's less risky to ground out B12, and messing up the cpu. Just a less risky approach in my thoughts. But thank you for the video brother!! Keep them coming!
Thank you for the comment. That sounds like an excellent idea with the multimeter. I just went with the cheap and easy method. I wasn't sure how a good light bulb looks across a multimeter. I know it has some resistance but not sure how much to expect.
I just changes all of my lights on the cluster. Thanks for the video! It made it much easier! THANK YOU!
danielboone72 what type of bulbs would I need ?
@@3r8mo same question I need to know the type of the bulbs I believe the big ones are 194 but not sure about the small ones. Please let me know if you know that thanks
I need to know the type of the bulbs I believe the big ones are 194 but not sure about the small ones. Please let me know if you know that thanks
Great video! You should be working in that industry! And thanks very much for clarifying a method to do this job. I will be starting this weekend.
Thanks for the encouraging words. Good luck with your dashboard.
Good video. For washing the clear plastic, the soap and water are good. Never use glass cleaner on clear plastic. Glass cleaners typically use ammonia which will make clear plastic cloudy.
+Ken6151 Thank you for the extra details. Always helpful.
Great Video and thanks for the help!!!
I have a 1999 Camry CE. Used 194 and 2721 bulbs. The 74 bulbs were a tiny bit too large.
Thank you for the excellent comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. Happy motoring!
Hello Greg. I need to know the type of the bulbs I believe the big ones are 194 but not sure about the small ones. Please let me know if you know that thanks

Nice and simple with the way you gave the instruction
Thank you for the kind comment. Happy Motoring!
Very helpful instruction! just replaced a panel bulb successfully. actually it's a little bit harder to remove the plastic panel than I thought. Anyway thanks a lot!
Jack Yan Glad you found it useful. It's nice to have all of those bulbs working. Happy motoring!
+FloridaJoe3 . Hi. I have 1999 camry and the P R N D L 2 lights don't show up inside the dashboards. Is it also due to bad light bulbs?
Thank you SO much for this video!! I drive a 97 and my odometer light just went out to join its friend who had previously gone out too...it was making me nervous to drive at night. This was perfect, and I was able to successfully replace everything back to working!! Thanks Again!! 😃
+Katia Morosan I'm so glad to hear that the video was helpful and you've returned to safe night driving. Happy motoring!
Thanks for the video. I have a 2001 camry with the same problem. I am going to try and fix it today.
+porkdogx Hope all went well!
+FloridaJoe3 Ho for it its a simple repair
Thank you sir you just saved me 60 bucks 😘😘
So glad to help. Happy Motoring!
To clean the inside of the plastic bezel, clean it with Armor All or Turtle Wax protectant (formerly Formula 2001) F21. Use that stuff, and you will NEVER have to clean it again! It will shine like glass!
Excellent advice. Thank you for commenting. You are the kind of viewer that makes CZcams great.
Great video Florida Joe.
How long did this whole process take you?? I'm a novice and easily break stuff.. thanks again.
Of course, I was filming and figuring stuff out along the way but I would think no more than an hour would be necessary if all the tools and parts are standing by. Thanks for the comment and good luck with it.
Thanks for the great video... Worked like a charm!
So glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the good tutorial
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. Happy Motoring!
Are the bulbs common? Where do you get them? Great old video. Still got the car?
I got the bulbs at the auto parts store. Most stores should have them. Sold the car a long time ago.
Great video.....i need to replace my 2001 Toyota Solara...where can i get the bulbs? Im new in huston, Tx.
I got my bulbs at the auto parts store. I believe someone posted an online source in the comments if you need it. Good luck.
So, I replaced my working (albeit very dim) dashboard light bulbs. While trying to take out the old bulbs, a couple of them broke off into the socket, so I replaced those as well. I inserted the bulb into the socket, socket into the hole on the dash and they clicked into place - replaced the instrument panel, turned on the key..... and.... nothing. They wouldn't work?!? Any troubleshooting tips?
+Markle Janner OK, there the obvious questions: did you plug all of the harnesses back in? did you turn the dash light dimmer off by accident? did you check the fuse to make sure you didn't short and pop it during removal? Barring that, I would take the thing back out inspect it and then reattach it so see if just 'messing' with it fixes it. Good luck.
Hello great video do you no how the middle a/c vent basil comes out.
I'm sorry, I can't remember how that comes out. I would think it snaps in and can be snapped out.
Very Helpful
+Mike Giammona Thank you for watching. Enjoy that 'new' console.
Thanks for this video my 1999 Camry xle dash looks just like yours. The only light thats illuminated is the gas gauge light & my climate control knob lights are out. I was hoping it was just a fuse in the fuse box under the driver side but i guess its this issue. I bought the car about 2 yrs ago do you know if the climate control knobs light up or no
I do not recall about the climate control knobs lighting. Best of luck with your repair. My favorite part of this kind of repair is the lack of grease and grime when working inside the car.
Connecting live battery wires to the gauge cluster can very easily burn it up. Leaving some bulbs out can trigger other warning lights and throw a code.
Thank you for your comment. I have to believe that you didn't try this on a 1997 Camry with the instrument panel fully removed. While what you say may be true for a newer car, the 1997 panel was very simple and unsophisticated. Applying power directly to the bulb sockets has very little risk. As for 'throwing a code', this little car didn't seem to know or care whether bulbs were missing. Happy motoring!
Was kind of hoping for Avalon it is way different same here 1997
Sorry it was too different to be useful. A lot of the things under the hood seem to be similar according to other comments. I wish the best fixing your Avalon. Happy motoring!
Awesome, thank you.
+Majic Malik Thank you for the positive feedback and thanks for watching.
I have a 1997 Toyota Avalon that my daughter currently has at college. I a wondering if the process is the same on the Avalon. I plan to do this on her spring break. Do you know the type of bulbs i need for replacement. I will change all of them. Thanks and Great Video!
+randall alliss I would think the Avalon would be very similar if not identical to the Camry. As for the bulbs, I thought I mentioned the type in the video. If not, just remove the panel and get the old ones out to take to the parts store with you. Good luck with it. It really is nice to get the lights all working again. Your daughter will love it and think your a genius.
+FloridaJoe3 Joe, thanks for the reply. I actually dove in today assuming the avalon was equivalent to the camry. It was not! There were two panels that i had to remove (very carefully) that exposed 6 screws, which i removed. However, i was unable to remove the bevel ( i was too scared i would break it). It just wouldn't budge. I've been unsuccessful in finding any videos/schematics/pictures on the internet specifically for this make/model. Do you have any suggestions other than taking it to the dealer :). thanks again. Randy
Oh no, not the dealer. He'll charge and arm and a leg for what should be an easy job. See if you can find the shop manual (online?) and look up how to remove that bezel. Good luck.
Good video thanks.
+c69101 Thanks for the positive feedback.
My entire instrument cluster gauges are not turning on. How do I trouble shoot to see if power is getting to it? Which wire back there is the power wire so I can check for continuity?
what would you recommend, replace the bulbs to regular bulbs or LED?????
+iovgrkso Wow, I didn't know that they made LED bulbs for the instrument panel. I personally like the soft yellow of the incandescent bulbs. I would certainly be interested to see what LEDs look like in there. They would be cooler and last longer.
yeah yeah, maybe, check the these LED light on Ebay or Google

Thanks for that link. I will check it out next time I need bulbs.
Hey ? A question ?? My Shift's light's wont turn on . There's any connection's frim the Shift stick to the Dashboard or its only all my bulb's it's out ???? Thanxx
Sounds like your bulbs are burned out. You can test the bulbs using your car's battery similar to how I showed in the video. Good luck! It really is nice to have all your lights working.
thank you! I have similar problem, my "D" gear select light is out.
I believe my D light was out also but I didn't video the replacement. I guess I should have.
no problem! your video was clear enough to figure it out.
My D gear light is out in dashboard how do I fix it....
@@chrisstylez5770 I really hope that you figured it out that all you have to do is change a bad bulb in your instrument cluster!
Where did you buy the wires to test the bulbs?
I just had some wire laying around and used it. You can buy wire of all kinds at any Ace hardware store. You probably want to get solid and not stranded for this job. Good luck.
half the right side of my speedometer light is off. would this work for my 1995 Camry?
I would imagine that it would be very similar. Go ahead and try it. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.
Hey thanks for the videos really helpful guides. I'm trying to change the ceramic resonator is there way you could help ? Are you in the Miami area?
+ashley renee Hello Ashley! I have to give you points for creativity. That's the first time I've ever heard of someone wanting to change their ceramic resonator. Pray tell, what makes you think that the CR is the problem?
+FloridaJoe3 hello what lights do I use for this model?
+Truth Seeker I don't remember the part number. You might want to do what I did: remove the bad lights and take them to the parts store to compare. Good luck with it.
What size of bulbs are the shifter indicator on the dashboard please
I removed mine and took them to the parts store to compare and find a match. Good luck with it.
Which bulbs have the green covers and which ones do not?
I thought they should all have the same covers but some of mine were missing. It's probably not critical unless you are restoring a car to factory new. That said, just keep track of covers as you are disassembling and make sure to put it back like you found it.
FloridaJoe3 Thank you for your quick reply! I’m actually trying to replace the bulbs in the 97 Camry instrument panel with their LED equivalents, and I heard that the colors matter. So I’m trying to figure out how many to get of which color... I know there’s five 194 bulbs (the big ones) and twenty-four 74 bulbs (the small ones).
Wow! LEDs. That's a great idea since you'll never have to do it again. I would assume you can keep track as the bulbs are removed as to which ones have the green cover. Otherwise, I don't know. Good luck.
That is a good idea. Thank you. :) I probably would have thought of that sooner or later, but your input is awesome, thank you! And yes, with LEDs I technically wouldn’t have to replace them again. The best to you!
How do I turn on the clock on the right side of the instrument panel? I have a 1997 Toyota Camry XLE
I'm pretty sure that you can't just turn a clock off and on. That said, I would verify that the power plug is connected to the back of the clock. If it is, disconnect and check for power. If no power, check the fuse. Good luck.
FloridaJoe3 ok
Daniel McDaniels g
Grace02 what do you mean by g?
If all of the lights went out at the exact same time suddenly, does that suggest a fuse simply blew vs. needing new bulbs? Thanks!
Yes, ;they would never all burn out at the same time. Either a fuse or a bad ground.
@@FloridaJoe3 Thanks a bunch Joe!
is this also where your signal flasher relay is? I have a 97 avalon and trying to fix my hazards/signals
No. I believe you'll find those in one of the fuse panels either under the hood or steering wheel. They should look like a little aluminum or plastic can. Good luck.
FloridaJoe3 do you have list of which type of bulbs I need. Would be much appreciated
I'm sorry I don't have that. I just took the bulbs to the auto parts store and made sure I got the same kind. They may have markings right on the bulb.
no screw driver! use a pry tool, you can damage the interior
Um...1997 Camry...I don't buy special tools for cars older than 15 years. But thank you for the comment. I agree that a pry tool would be the ticket for this job.
If you open cars on the reg you might as well get some pry tools they're like $8 on ebay for a set
I guess Harbor Freight would have then too. OK, I'll try to get then next time I do one of these interior jobs. Thanks for the comments.
Does the regular dash have an auxillary port?
I'm not sure but I don't think so. I can't remember since I sold the car several years back.
What about the lights for the brake and drive handle, my lights went out or is it all connected to the same lights from the dashboard??? Thanks
+Lucci Luciano I have heard that when all your dash light go out, it indicates a bad taillight. Either that or your panel dimmer switch is turned all the way down. I'm not sure what you mean by brake and drive handle lights. Please elaborate.
+FloridaJoe3 the gear lever, gear shift , the lights on there it went all dark
This is how you blow the motherboard! Never press a live wire to a motherboard. Motherboards take predesigned grounds and amps. The amps from a battery are straight, conductive, current. The amps from a battery, applied over and over can fry the motherboard. From any position. Test the bulbs individually, or relpace all bulbs, and work from there.
Yes, I have demonstrated an effective technique for "blowing a motherboard" here and if I were working with a motherboard I would be much more careful. The instrument cluster in this car is a simple printed circuit board with no ESD sensitive components. If you somehow got a dead short across the traces, you could burn a trace so caution is still advised. Thank you for commenting.
@@FloridaJoe3 Then why did you switch to individual bulb testing midway through the video? It's not because someone told you the same thing I'm saying right?
@@ricky-sanchez No, I think I was trying to show both methods. After a bulb is found defective in the socket, I want to test it individually to make sure the problem is not on the circuit board.
Where did you get the replacement bulbs?
They had them at my local auto parts store. (Can't remember which one.)
1:07 i don't if it's because i don't have a screw driver but getting that part off on the right is difficult.
Hmm... I don't remember if it was difficult. It's hard to know when to lightly jiggle it and when just give it a good yank. I've broken a few plastic parts because I guessed wrong. Good luck with yours.
@@FloridaJoe3 I was able to get it off next time ima change the color for the lights. 😎💯
will this work for a 1999?
Sorry I just now saw your comment (1 month later). I can't say for sure but I would bet my lunch money that the 1999 is very similar. Try it. Good luck.
I can confirm the panel removal is the same on a 1999 Camry CE. Looks like there's a metal clip holding the left side that wants to be pulled straight out (towards your right eyebrow when sitting in the driver seat).
4 cylinder or V6 cylinder?
6 cylinder. Sorry for the late reply.
Using metal against plastic trim is the easiest way to damage it.
So true. I have since purchased a plastic set of panel pry bars and I highly recommend them.
NEVER check lamps this way! Voltage can feedback into the circuits and damage other components! ALWAYS remove the lamp from the circuit and test with a meter or continuity tester!
That seems like good advice to me but I'm not sure what circuits you are worried about feeding back into. This is just a circuit board and it's traces, no semiconductor chips or anything.
YOU MAY WANT TO REOPEN IT AGAIN ,YOU LEFT THE UPPER RIGHT SCREW LOSE ON THE INSTRUMENT GROUP.
No way! You truly have an eye for detail. I hope that whoever I sold the car to will see this comment and fix his console. Thanks for watching (so closely, too)!
actually i saw a few of your other videos and I to say they were very helpful so thank you very much for taking the time to film then...my wife have a 97 camry and I like working on it so thanks and keep up the good work, GOD bless....
Thank you so much for the kind words. So glad that you found my videos helpful. God bless you.
Can anyone tell me how many bulbs of each type is held by this panel? I figure watching this video 5-9 big (194-type?) bulbs and 19-22 of the small (74-type) bulbs. Any thoughts?
+abbottim Actually - are there bulbs behind the ventilation panel and shifter panels as well?
+abbottim Pause at 5:56 and you can count the bulbs by their black sockets. It looks like 5 big ones and 20 little ones.
+abbottim From your questions, it sounds like you're not seeing any lights at all. Is your dashboard dimmer turned all the way down or do you have a fuse blown maybe? Just a thought.
how do I remove the center console, where there heat and cold controls?
+KING CED That is a larger undertaking. I can't really give you any advice on that one since I've sold my Camry. I hope you find your answer. Try ToyotaNation forum. Good luck.
this cluster uses TOSHIBA V-2 bulb available here - www.speedometerbulbs.com/collections/toshiba
speedometer bulbs Thank you for the additional info. It looks like you can actually buy the sockets at this sight. That's cool in case some one has lost or broken a socket. Thanks for watching and happy motoring.
Why waste time trying to figure out which ones need to be replaced when you should just replace all of them they aren’t expensive at all 🤣
Ha ha. Good point. Just assuming that DIYers are trying to save money.
I’m here to learn but he’s also hot 👩🏽🦯 I’m sorry I’ll go now
Maybe have your vision checked. Good luck with that.
hahaha automatic braking system....
