    IF ONLY
    Steam Input was Open Source, we could have DIY open source controller like the Alpakka fully utilize the on-board side of Steam Input rather than having to essentially engineer their own version of it but more importantly:
    We could have a system wide Steam Input translation running on the OS itself and changing the profiles of input based on whichever window or application is currently in-focus, working for any game in or outside of Steam and any program outside of gaming too.

      I had a 1U 1 TB drive in the past. It took forever to download and patch games due to the slow write speeds. Storage couldn't keep up with the gigabit network connection supplying it with data resulting in massive slowdowns. Overall, it provided a very uneven experience with great read speeds and terrible write speeds. I ended up retiring the card after the constant patch cycles of certain games burned through the write cycle count which resulted in in a read only card with half complete data.

    Steam audio covering software compatibility with FMOD might do good things for the stability problems seen with games using FMOD in proton. In 2022, some FMOD games would just have really buggy audio no matter what you did.

    Valve has been the single greatest driver towards open source technology. They've had a larger and more positive influence than GNU.

    • @themedleb
      @themedleb Před 3 měsíci +12

      GNU is focusing on Libre which is a little better (philosophically) than just open source.
      Valve is focused on gaming software (even though some of the non-gaming aspects benefits from it).
      GNU's software focus is much broader.
      We can't just easily compare different institutions that easily, they both benefited/benefiting the Linux and open source world in their own way.

    • @anon_y_mousse
      @anon_y_mousse Před 3 měsíci +5

      @@themedleb And I will continue to maintain that GNU's philosophy has hurt open source and the adoption of open source software. Disagree all you want, but Google dumped all the GNU elements in making their own Linux distribution, Android, and desktop market share is maybe 3 to 5% in reality, regardless of the collected stats saying 1.5% or whatever they're saying now. Desktop market share should be significantly higher 25 years on having things like GNOME and KDE. Some people will even argue that such things aren't important, but Microsoft with their monopoly have hurt consumers and civilization at large in various ways, that had we all adopted open source would not have happened.

    • @themedleb
      @themedleb Před 3 měsíci

      @@anon_y_mousse
      You mentioned Google/Android, Gnome, KDE, desktop market ...which implies you're focusing on GUI and desktop related stuff, of course you'll find that Valve did more in this regard, but I was talking about Linux and open source as a whole server included (since that's what you talked about in your first comment).
      And honestly, this hollowing out and denial of how much we have the FSF/RMS/GNU to thank for is getting silly. Without GNU there would be no Linux, end of story. The fact that the hard work of those pioneers that made Linux and everything else we can now take for granted and the projects we now can use to replace what used to be irreplaceable possible does not change that fact.
      Nitpicking over how much GNU there still is is pathetic, oh GNOME is no longer a GNU project? Big deal, I still count it, without GNU there would not have been a Gnome and without the constant bickering between Gnome and KDE, KDE wouldn't be where it is today (and vice versa, obviously).
      Without gcc/glibc there wouldn't have been a Linux and most of us would be using some commercial OS, the rest of us (a vast minority) would still be trying to get HURD to run on their hardware.
      Bottom line: show some respect for the man and the project, you have a lot to thank both of them for, and how much actual GNU parts there still are in your average distribution is irrelevant.

    Gamescope is more about displaying than a desktop environment (it is called a microcompositor). But it is used for the game mode desktop environment on Steam Deck (which is basically big picture mode) along with any game running on the Deck (at least in game mode, maybe it doesn't use it in desktop mode).
    I think it lacks support for multi windows which is why nobody uses it for a more regular desktop environment (probably also a lot of other things missing compared to X11 and Wayland) but it has more features relevant for gaming (at least more so in the past, Wayland has gotten more things added).

    steam audio is great and all, but can we just enable game pausing on the steam deck when it sleeps so the audio doesnt break all the time? ive basically abandoned the preview and beta update channels because i CANNOT use my deck without the "pause before suspend" decky plugin. nothing else has fixed the audio crackle caused by sleeping the deck, and this issue has been around since DAY ONE. 1:53, that's great and all. But i wont buy SanDisk. I've had their SD Cards and Flash drives. They all have failed on me within a year. Even my cheap Chinese drives that cost $12 for six of them are still working. While every SanDisk drive i own is a brick. My preference is Kingston. I've been using Kingston products for 20 years, and never had one fail. Not one time. Maybe i'm just lucky. But that's impressive either way.

    I wish either Valve would open-source SteamVR or get on with the process of fixing up SteamVR for Linux so it is on-par with their Windows product. So far SteamVR for Linux trails behind, it is often broken upon a release, stutters far more and has less FPS than their Windows version.

    Why is not expected a USB + BT Steam Controller 2 with the shape of the Steam Deck?
    Why not other vendors offer it using those upgraded sticks that some people change on their Steam Decks?
    Why not even a kickstarter project to see if it would sell 10.000 units that is the minimum to mass produce?
    Not only for Steam desktops for Steam Machines, it would be great for Android games, Steam Link on TVs and phones, and even for MS WOS gaming, and a way of making it a standard that every game will have to adapt to, including future handhelds where everybody misses the 2 Steam Deck touchpads, that I think have to become a standard.

    • @AndersHass
      @AndersHass Před 3 měsíci

      @@lepatenteux592 the big similarity is why I did think there wasn't Crossover for Linux because of Proton's prevalence in Linux, where Proton was dropped for MacOS therefore I thought that was why Crossover existed on MacOS.
      Wine is a project of its own but CodeWeavers is their main corporate sponsor and hires developers who do 2/3 of the commits to the project.
      Crossover is CodeWeavers commercial Wine product. Then Valve hired CodeWeavers to make Proton where its improvements to Wine gets added to Wine.

    Given how Manjaro has a history of a big mess up every few months, I wouldn't buy the handheld. I remember that I install Spotify on it and it destroyed my whole desktop environment a few years ago. Add to that that their repos go out of sync with Arch which leads to all kinds of problems.
    I prefer Garuda for an Arch like Linux distribution as it has lots of things for gaming and management of the OS and BTRFS snapshots by default.
    SteamOS is pretty good so I would not install anything else on it OS wise if I could buy one in my country. Besides, you could probably install that BPM game manager software via a Flatpak or with distrobox.
