God’s Shadow: Sultan Selim and his Ottoman Empire

- Join us for a virtual conversation between Alan Mikhail and Adam Hochschild about Mikhail's new book, God's Shadow. Although long neglected in European-centric world histories, the Ottoman Empire was a hub of intellectual fervor, geopolitical power and enlightened pluralistic rule. At the height of their authority in the 16th century, the Ottomans, with military dominance and monopolies over trade routes, controlled more territory and ruled over more people than any other world power of the time, forcing Europeans out of the Mediterranean and to the New World.
Mikhail recasts this Ottoman history by retelling it through the dramatic biography of Sultan Selim I (1470-1520). Born to a concubine, the fourth of his sultan father’s 10 sons, Selim's charisma and military prowess―as well as the guidance of his mother Gülbahar―allowed him to claim power in 1512 and then nearly triple the empire's territory, building a governing structure that lasted into the 20th century. Selim also fostered religious diversity, encouraged learning and philosophy, and penned his own verse.
Drawing on previously unexamined sources, Mikhail’s game-changing account adroitly uses Selim’s life to upend prevailing shibboleths about Islamic history, radically reshaping our understanding of the history of the modern world.

Yavuz Sultan Selim is indeed a very interesting subject because he is not just a conqueror but also a poet. He is the depiction of the Ottoman male of his era. He mates with women to produce worthy heirs, a serious mistake Alexander the Great, Selim's role model, made causing the split of his empire to many competing pieces that eventually led to the domination of the united Roman Empire. But Selim was also in love with his Grand Vizier Hadim Sinan Pasha who was a eunuch (Hadim in Ottoman). In this sense Selim is the picture of Ottoman vitality conquering everything in sight, the same way Alexander the Great behaved. Selim never resists an occasion to display his masculinity even at his own risk and there are several occasions he puts even his life at risk especially during his strugle with the Mamluk Empire. He is not a prolific builder like his son, but he builds the Marble Kiosk on the Bosporus shore inside the Seraglio walls to enjoy privacy for the same reasons Mehmet II built the Cinil Kiosk, keeping his harem miles away in the Eski Sarayi close to the Janissary baracks.
These more personal details are the important ones that define Selim as a human being and if an author bypasses facts like that he is not worth reading, simply because the personal fights of a man with himself (or a woman with herself) are the ones who define greatness. In the case of Selim his sexual preferences are the ones that explain the fact he executed all of his sons except one, Suleiman the Magnificent, who also executed two of his best sons. To any reader who has children these are the facts most difficult to explain. A final serious error the author makes is to refer to Selim in this lecture as a Turk. At the time the Sultans considered themselves as Ottomans not Turks. Selim used to say that a Turk without a horse is worth nothing, and Suleiman said that he speaks in Bosnian when he talks to his military commanders, Venetian when he is trading in a bazaar, Arabic when he reads the Koran and Turkish when he talks to his horse. Genetically speaking when a child is born it shares half of its DNA with his mother. The Selim was the ninth Sultan and Suleiman the Tenth. Since the mothers of the Sultans were slaves on purpose to avoid creating genetic ties with powerful Turkish families, the Turkish protion of the Sultans' DNA declined with each generation by a factor of 2, i.e. in the case of Selim 1/2^9. Therefore, in the case of the Sultans their "Turkish" blood is an illusion. Illusions are poweful ingredients of a person's character, but have no place in a book by a scholar from a renowned American university.
Hadim Sinan Pasha was his best friend not his lover, there is a misinformation that Sinan Pasha being a eunuch married a daughter of Bayezid II (r. 1481-1512), and this error is caused by the fact that the husband of Ayşe Sultan is named Damat Guveyi Sinan Pasha who beget three children with Ayşe and died in 12 January 1504.

Islam mean > submission < to God
( The above verse saying is that God will not accept a religion from the "MUSLIM" and the Non-Muslims but total > submission < to God.)

* No one can force you to become a good human being.
* You MUST work HARD to become a good human being.
* Why should ''YOU'' do good deeds and avoid bad deeds?
* Do Good - it's for You. Do Bad - It's against you.
* '' YOUR'' life is a TEST from God that you will choose to do either Good or Bad.
* Find the excuse to help others and forgive others NOT the other way around.
* '' YOUR '' final destination is either Hell or Heaven.
* So work HARD toward choice of YOUR destination.
