  • What will US farmers do without immigrants?
Farming uses a higher number of undocumented workers than any other US industry, and that's sparking concern about what will happen if the Trump administration presses ahead with its immigration policies.
Al Jazeera's Andy Gallacher reports from Clanton, Alabama.

There is two sides of the coin : so there is bunch of jobs that nobody else want to do, except the immigrants and we really want and need them there. In the 70's, I traveled around the country and Canada mostly the Northwest. I worked side by side with these migrant farm workers. The days were long and the work was backbreaking. These gracious people out worked me ten to one. They got paid half of what I did and did double the work. I quit a few farms because if this unfair practice. These beautiful people busted their butts and sent most of their small earnings back home to help support their families. In spite of all that, they gave unselfishly to me of their food when I had little to none and of their warm blankets and firewood on the cold September nights to help keep me warm. I never asked they just knew. Like angles one by one they would softly approach me and lay their blankets upon me and some wood on my small fire and a plate of food to wake up to. I will never forget their heart warming love and I swore right there all those years ago I would always pay it forward and so I have and still do. This is what makes not only America great, but the whole of humanity. We are eachother, like it or not. Great good is in front of us when we are open to receive and give and have compassion for eachother. It's the lack of the willingness to understand that separates us from eachother and closes the heart. Whatever happens, keep the heart open...

    A nation:
    built by immigrants.
    sustained & fed by immigrants.
A nation that uses immigrants for it's political whims.
A nation whose identity and origin is immigrants CANNOT survive without immigrants!
Farming under the blazing sun or in the bitting cold is an almost impossible challenge for those who are accustomed to fast-food and spend hours watching television.
It's one thing to watch the super games. And other, to be training, training & bleeding sweat.
The same, eating a nice Sunday meal with potatoes, tomatoes and all farmed picked vegetables that to be surrounded(picking) with all this food on a farm!
I respect the fact that every country has the right to make and enforce its national polices in favor of its citizens.
However, no one should give a blind-eye to the valuable contributions of the immigrant population.
Once, there were black slaves, Slavery. No one 'kicked up dust' that they were immigrants(from the Africa).
Now, it's paid Latin slaves are immigrants.

One farmer said he doesn't pay hourly but for each box filled with a certain product( oranges, tomatoes, etc) the worker would get 1$. Yeah, some workers get paid legit nothing for extreme manual labor. But at the same time, the farmers have to give out low wages since they ain't getting sheet to profit themselves and the big food companies like Tyson, Nestle, etc run the whole joint and force farmers into huge debt traps and they also control the market. So I understand why they want to have low-wage workers especially in Cali where housing costs and taxes are high.

Those are menial jobs that are suited for desperate migrant workers and it's the reason why our food is relatively cheap. We start forcing farmers to hire Americans and we start getting 10 dollar per pound food items because these new workers are going to demand benefits and higher pay.

Pay and follow the law to hire foreign workers like Canada does. Many farm workers come from the Caribbean to work every year to earn a living. These farmers are cheap and unfair. They want workers that they only have to pay a paltry sum and provide inadequate food and shelter for. They are running their workers like animals so that’s why the Americans won’t stay. Truthfully, when I was a boy everyone went & work in the fields at harvest time. That was the reason for summer vacation in school. The white peoples, the black, Mexicanos como yo, like me. We all worked together. The white people could work very hard, I remember my grandfather from Mexico always remarking how gringos worked harder than everybody else. Now a days it's about conditioning. People live in air condition go to school & work in air condition, no one is comfortable anymore outside. Not whites, not blacks not even Mexican Americans. So we bring immigrants in that are used to it. It's that simple. The pay is low, if they pay more the price of food would be to high, no one would buy it. We need each other. God made us to work together not to fight each other. Everyone likes to point out about white prejudice but I see it also in my people as well as the blacks. We are all the same. As Jesus said ' why do you tell your brother come that I may remove the speck in your eye. Hypocrite! Remove the spec from
Your own eye then you will see clear enough'. We need to work together to keep this a wonderful nation. That is why the Middle East is a mess, the people there never can forgive each other of sins of their forefathers. They constantly war. Let us show the world what America always has been. A place where people who are different can cooperate & work together to accomplish goals no one before dared even dream of. We are a great nation because we worked together & tolerated each other. The reason our food is good price and in abundance is because of these workers, who work for less than minimum wage in hot field conditions.

An immigrant is not an "illegal alien".
An immigrant petitions the host nation for permission to enter, reside, and seek employment within the borders of the host nation.
A Visa, a ballpoint pen, and approval = no problems.
It is the non-citizen foreign national who must meet the requirements, qualifications, and standards set forth by the host nation… not Vis Versa.
You are to knock on someone's door and ask their approval and permission to enter their home and dwelling. If they say no … then you do not enter.
    It is that simple.
Immigration is a special privilege granted by the host, it is not a human right.
    PERIOD

They were LEGAL QUEST WORKERS they didnt flood usa by the millions. didnt take jobs wanted by americans. didnt live off our social services etc let them do it legally now..great for them and their family back home..great for americas agriculture and our food cost. making it a WIN WIN for all concerned IMO🤗

"soooo u think only illegal workers will do it?"
Anybody can do this job, giving that there is not a serious disability...
      The challenges are:
      1. finding someone who is willing to kill himself for a couple of months until the body starts to get used to the work.
      2. That farmer does not seems to have any patience, or will to build a new workforce, he much rather want the one that used to be to come back.
      3. Highly educated youth think they can do better in other jobs. This job is just no sexy.
The young man at the grocery store have the right idea... you can kick out all the illegals if you want to... but you can't expect to kick out millions of people and not create a hole in the system... To kick them out you need to plan for it, lest say 100k at the time, replacing man per man on the work-field, very methodical and steady, you can archive the goal in few years... and not creating this disturbance on the economy.
I have less tolerance for stupid than for racist... but Trump and his supporters are both.

In Florida the farmers filed H-2A temporary agricultural workers to bring foreign nationals as agricultural workers, with US citizenship and Immigration services. They have been doing this for the past 35 years, and they dont have any issues. The workers are legally in the states for the period of times they are working here. I have seen big families, and even spoke with them. Something is not right with this interview, I guess the idea is to mislead people.

the farmers should never had access to low-wage illegal immigrants in the first place. it was like having free cocaine, and then you're hooked. you do it like generations of Europeans have done it -- have more kids who'll help out or you start hiring teens and young people. and if you can't pay them a living wage, then obviously your farm isn't being managed right, and you need to go out of business and find another job you're good at.

read a book on economics that should be interesting or maybe history considering instances such as the brasero program or Reagan's pardon. Also there are a bunch of subsidies for agriculture, you cant just pick and choose facts, this is issue is far more complicated than what most people think...

      Your comment makes no sense.
Are you just angry I made it, and got 5 thumbs up, and you have none? Jealous?
It's called market economics. You obviously have no understanding of it.
The market is unforgiving. If you can't provide living wages to your employees, you aren't doing something right. Either charge more, or you have to manage better.
If I opened up a taco stand, and I paid my employees 10 cents an hour because I had easy access to illegal labor and I was able to turn a profit, and then the government puts an end to that illegal labor, then that's my problem if my business can't survive when I have to pay employees a living wage or the minimum wage. That is not the governments problem. And I shouldn't whine like a baby I want my cheap illegal immigrant labor back.
