I just plant the nuts in the garden about 3 inches deep in the fall. I also plant some garlic cloves to mark the row. The garlic comes up early in the spring but the hazel may not sprout until late spring or even later. The garlic shows where the hazels will eventually come up. I am in zone 5a Canada which is 6a in the USA.
That is a genius idea and thank you for sharing! We are fairly new to propagating and starting fruit/nut trees. We will definitely be giving the fall planting into the ground a try with the garlic for makers:). Thanks again for the info and Happy Gardening!
