Berseria is definitely my favorite Tales game. I, too, found myself shocked at how quickly I finished the game and I could not put it down. I normally take over a month to finish JRPGs, including Zestiria and even the fan-adored Symphonia. Berseria, on the other hand...I finished it in six days despite working full-time as well. It also gave me the most feels of any Tales game I've played.
Velvet is a awesome character

Motoi Sakuraba has been phoning in the Tales of ost's for years but I can't deny that it just fits.
Magilou's theme though.. that's the real MVP on the OST this time around. One of the only songs that stayed in my mind since launch.
My favourite character is definitely Velvet. I just love a good character going dark for understandable reasons. The scantily clad outfit, the English voice acting and over powered demon arm really make me feel like I'm playing a total bad girl!
YES. Honestly I love the entire cast! But Velvet is on a league of her own!

Coming to Berseria a couple months after beating Arise and I'm loving it in comparison. I'm about 90% of the way through and other than a few dungeons that overstayed their welcome, the game has been pretty solid. Some of the character growth has paid off in satisfying ways and I'd be lying if I said I haven't gotten misty eyed in parts. Tales has never been a mind blowing series but it's still a guilty pleasure of mine and I'd put this one in at least the top 5 (of Tales games). I don't know about the English voice cast but the Japanese one is great, as usual. Velvet's screams when she performs the Discord Break Arte give me good chills and Magilou's chaotic energy is amazing.

Many people only see the dark and vengeance themes on the surface, and even think that Viovet is unchanged. I can only say they were so wrong
I loved Berseria and am glad that Bandai Namco was able to redeem themselves after Zestiria. I agree with your point about lackluster dungeon design. The combat is fun enough to keep the player engaged through dungeons, but more variety and interactive sections would be appreciated.
I will ALWAYS remember the hope vs despair scene with Velvet and Phi. Too good.
Perfect script and characterization, everything in this game can be summed up in one sentence-"The conflict between emotion and reason"

Great job with the entire structure of your videos, specifically the way you begin with a sort of prologue to the game, transition to a summary spliced with your evaluations on plot, characters, gameplay, and music, move to your final thoughts, and then an with an epilogue with some additional comments. I really appreciate this consistent structure. Also, as one who majored in English in college, I really pay attention to your language use, and I have to say that I appreciate your unique use of words to articulate and illustrate your ideas! Overall, I'm saying that you and your channel rock! Keep up the fantastic work!
THIS is my sister's favorite in the Tales games series as she is all things dark and the revenge aspect to this game she really loved it for the wife and I we liked it.... we just did not like it the best in the series..... but was a interesting watch and something my sister will yell and scream with joy when she sees it later herself. Was a treat to see and hear what aspects of the game you liked and loved after not being a huge Tales fan yourself.

Magilou's my favourite videogame character, and i think it's erica lindbeck's strongest work
I liked a lot of this game's tracks though. My favs have to be:
-The Will That Opposes Reason
-Time To Relax
-All the renditions of Velvet's theme
-Daemon's Assault (normal boss theme)
-Chance Meeting With Myself
-Burn/Flow (opening song)
-Burn Your Soul and Fly
-Eleanor's Theme
-Magilou's Theme
Also I agree on the dungeons. Personally, since I play a lot of classic Dragon Quest games with dungeons that are also sort of bland, I didn't mind it much in Berseria. But its definitely an issue. I think the only dungeon that didn't feel super bland was the Underwater Temple. I thought the towns and cities were fun to explore though.
To be fair on the classic Dragon Quest games, they were pretty limited before when technology evolves and makes the other RPG games designs more unique. Doesn't make the bland ones bad. Just not at the right moment. I still love the likes of Dragon Quest 3 & 4. They're some of my favorites of the series. But the dungeons in those games were limited at it's time.
The dungeons in this game detracted from it a lot for me. It would get either a 7 or 8 from me. The story was easily the best thing about the game. Velvet and Magilou have good themes as well, but generally the soundtrack is fairly poor alright.

Hello! I love your reviews, and am so happy that you reviewed this game! I have never played any other Tales of game (besides a tiny bit of Symphonia back in the day), but bought this when it came out to see what all the fuss was about in regards to the series as a whole. I’ve played it a bit since then, but it seems like there are always other games that get in the way. Also, I like the story and characters, but I just can’t seem to get into the battle system all that much. It could be from lack of understanding how best to set up my commands and equipment, tbh. Anyway, thanks for the great review!

Yes, this was the Title I had to basically finish before I started Arise. I liked the Easter eggs from Tales of Xillia that I actually stumbled upon before going on to finish.
Wow!! Wasn't expecting a 9/10 from you. I definitely agree with what you said about the graphics and music. I did like "Will and Reason" and "Velvet's Theme" from the game and Also bringing back Zaveid's Theme was nice. As for my favorite Tales of Character, I'll have to say its between Eizen, Jade or Kratos.
I honestly wasn't expecting a 9/10 from me either to be honest. But the story and characters is what I put the most points in and it succeeded in that regard with flying colors. The BIGGEST issue was the exploration. Touch that up and it would have been solid. Oooh, I do love me some Kratos... even though he hurt me deeply. ;n; Thanks for watching!!

Been waiting for this review! I agree with much of your complaints, the dungeons were dull and the music was a bit lackluster aside from a few tracks. I didn't like the intro at first, but it actually grew on me, where I now watch it every time i load the game up! But the best part about the game was its story and characters, such a rich narrative that is definitely up there as one of my favorite PS4 game!

Eleanor was one of those characters that I absolutely hated at first but I like a lot near the end

I have actually not played Tales of Zestiria yet. I will, eventually. I did a poll on Twitter a couple weeks afo about which game I should play next from this series, and Vesperia won. But from what I hear, I probably won't like Zestiria.

Know it had its flaws but glad you like one of my favorite games. The cast is so likeable especially pre-Therion Velvet, Magilou and Eleanor; what a peach. Been loving the stuff you’ve been putting out like always especially this and parasite eve.
Agree about the dungeons and music although I kinda like the OP theme. Bien this was just so magikazam. Also for most battles you want op? Like a shooting star all the way haha. What’s your favorite part? Laphi’s speech made the game for me.

Laphi's speech was great, but I really like when Velvet was loosing it, or the ending. It was depressing and wholesome. Or any part with Rokurou, >w>
Same, I don't like overly good characters but I can appreciate them if they're genuinely good people especially if they've been through hell or have every right to be an asshole but aren't. I prefer villains, antiheroes or heroes with flaws but that aren't edgy but willing to do what it takes to get shit done.
Man when I first started playing I saw vids on youtube of this really pro Rokurou player; he made it look so stylish and clean. Question, what are we fans of yours called collectively? Fucking gremlins haha because I'm more of an ogre or orc stature wise.

Awesome video and fantastic review! Not really played a lot of the Tales games. I think I've only played Xillia nad Zesteria. This game looks really fun though. Definitley gonna give this game a go! I also love the animated cut scenes. Always love animated cut scenes ina game, Its one of the things I love about Persona 4 and 5!
Thinking of trying this game, looking for a co op RPG game. Looks very interesting. The story looks pretty influenced by the manga/anime Berserk, maybe thats what the title of the game was inspired by. I highly recommend it.

This game really got my JRPG juices flowing. 😇It was a great story-based game to experience! I really enjoyed the combat of the game, but at the same time i wanted to test out my skill sets without being in the heat of combat. So one thing i really wish the game had was a training area where you can freely fight and test out your skills and combos. Yes i believe there is a Katz mini game within the Town areas where you fight a dummy to score the most amount of points with limited time, but i won't consider it as a training area. Also with the music in this game the only ones that truly stand out for me are the individual theme songs for each character. Velvet's theme is the most memorable and has been composed multiple times each with a different vibe to it. Overall it is definitely one of my favorite Tales games alongside Tales Of Xillia! 😃

That is a GREAT point about the pirate ship stuff. When Laphi was talking about "one day we can explore the world and go to the ends of the earth" and i thought that was some sort of foreshadowing. So yeah, I was also disappointed that we couldn't actually SEE those far off islands that we sent the ship to.
I never really stopped to criticize the game. Maybe it's just because it was leaps and bounds better than Zestiria, which I played first.
Oh yes, and great point about the music. I liked Zestiria's soundtrack WAY better than Berseria. (i'm only comparing the 2 because those are the only 2 tales games i've played)
I think when you're just playing a game to play you don't stop to think to criticize every nook and cranny of it. As a reviewer kind of what I do. LOL but the pirate ship was very disappointing. And Berseria was so much better than Zestiria. Hope you play more Talea of gamea and thank you for watching!!

I REALLY hope they will expand on the geo board mechanic in their next game and add fun platforming while traversing the world. Good point about the dungeons and music. My biggest gripe was the dungeons, especially the prison in particular. All that said, the characters and even the npc interactions put this game right up there for me :) Have you played Trails in the Sky yet?
I do too! The geo board is a WELCOMED edition. I really need better dungeons in these games. That's been a consistent problem with Tales of games as of late. Boring exploration and dungeon design. Nope, and I probably won't. I have a long list of games already. Until that list is dented I'm not looking into recommendations. You know how it is, so many games and not enough time to play them all.
The Geoboard came way too late in the story.
I'm kinda partial to some of the cast of Symphonia, since it was my first Tales game, though I'd have to play more of the games to pick a favorite or anything. great review!

Tales of Berseria is now among my top 5 RPGs of all time. While I adore the game for its story and characters I agree with its MANY flaws. I'm hard pressed to score this more than an 8/10 when even a 7/10 feels appropriate. The game is 'meh' and flawed with only that one element truly raising the bar and making it something special.

Last Tales game I played was Xillia 1. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Haven;t played Xillia 2 yet. Only other Tales games I've played were Symphonia and Vesperia. How would you say Beseria compares to them?
Agreed with everything you said! Such a great story and battle system, but the visuals, dungeons and music all fall short. And crafting could have been better. I also though Berseria somehow made Zestiria better in hindsight- I didn't finish Zestiria before but now I want to go back and try again. What do you think of the trailer for Tales of Arise?

I finished this recently after putting it aside for a few years, had to start over because i completely forgot how to play, the combat can be randomly difficult, or incredibly easy (playing or hard or more)
Aside from the presentation, this is a great game I agree. At least it runs very well, and it's pretty fast paced. I don't like the character designs that much, other than Eleanor and Aizen, I found the other characters to be too flashy. This is also a game where I spent most of my time not playing the main protagonist, I really liked the gameplay of Aizen after setting him up with some awesome teleport knock down combos. He's probably the strongest single character I've ever used in a Tales game, If you thought Velvet was OP, you are right, but Aizen is where it's at.
Shout out to Rokurou having the hardest 3rd Mystic arte to pull off ever of any modern Tales of game, it's pretty satisfying to pull off though. It was interesting hearing you say having lower HP makes you do more damage, i never noticed that, not that I never got low on HP, but on average there isn't really much healing or anything going on in this game, it's all equipment based.
Probably the worst thing about this game was mastering equipment, it took such an awful long time to do that, especially when you would pick up an armor piece with 600 or 800 points to go, you would have it on for a whole dungeon or possibly 2, and then you would pick up so many more things. Also, the lack of an airship, or actual non-menu sea exploration shows the rushed factors of this game. It's leagues better than Zesteria because of the gameplay and story, but it didn't get upgraded anywhere else.
The early Tales games had amazing soundtracks. But at some point they just started pushing Sakuraba to fart out sound alikes of old songs on a short schedule rather than having him more involved in the music direction.

I wanna start getting into the tales games…I’m playing thru the .hack last recode games on PS4 and I find jrpgs to be almost like the game equivalent of comfort food…I know they’re not always that great but I just love the numbers, colorful attacks, and characters…fun stuff.

Well, if you haven't already heard, it's mostly worth it for the awesome soundtrack by Go Shiina (IMO the only Tales soundtrack that matters!) - guess it's good thing you can just listen to it without having to play the game. The Little Sonic Honestly I thought I'd like him but he was kinda meh to me. Normally I love flirty men.
Favorite character is easily Gaius from Xillia :) can't say no to how commanding he is in Xillia and then how much more there is to his character in Xillia 2 plus just absolute favorite character to play as in Xillia 2 any chance I get!
I definitely agree with Berseria dungeons being way to hollow and generic and well empty to say the least. The last time I enjoyed a Tales dungeon was in either Xillia's games, Grace's F, or Vesperia. I'm excited for the Vesperia re-release since it was my favorite :) Have you played Vesperia?
I do love King Gaius I cannot tell a lie. It was a tosss up between him, Jade and King Richard. I haven't played Graces F in a while but I know I loved the hell outta that game. I wonder what I'd think if I played it now. I haven't played but I'm going too. ;D

I hope you play the PS4 remake of Tales of Vesperia coming out in December. It's considered to be one of the best games in the Tales of series with it's diverse cast, great battle system, and GORGEOUS graphics... that for some reason... never came to games later in the series.... how odd. In any case though I hope you enjoy it when it comes out, also have you heard the music in Tales of Legendia? THE BEST soundtrack in the series!
Oh I absolutely do. But not right away. First Kingdom Hearts III which is due in January. So I won't be playing any JRPGS after Suikoden III (maybe) before then. And Legendia is also on my list...eventually. x.x; So many games.
I played Berseria and loved the plot but major issue for me was the size and boringness of dungeons and open world areas. Only now when I play Tales of Zestiria I see that somehow I like its gameplay and exploration more

happyknappy14 i am SO sorry that Zestirira was your first one. That is one of the WORST entries in the entire series. Please, please, please give Berseria, Graces F, or Abyss a go! And word is Vesperia is the best which is coming out this year - but I haven't played it....yet.

Ooh. My favorite Tales of character? Hmm. I haven't played nearly as many Tales of games as I want (Graces f, Arise, Berseria, Symphonia, Hearts R are all). Probably Zealos (sp?) or Pascal. Hard to say.

Ahhh man I haven’t played a Tales game since I finished Xillia 2 last year. I don’t necessarily feel turned off by the series as a whole but while I’m having my Persona marathon and juggling FFXII and Octopath I don’t think I need to squeeze in another JRPG
But as mentioned in the video, the environments, art style, and music kinda makes me not wanna play the game. Maybe I should go back and play an older game like Graces or the Vesperia remaster before I jump into Zestiria and Berseria

Graces f must have sold you entirely on the Gameplay (which I admit is FUN AS HELL! Played through the whole game with 2-3 friends which is a rare treat), but man...that story and music was some of the worst. I heard it gets better after the main story, but all 4 of us were ready to be done, despite the game being a blast to play.
They need to put Go Shiina back on a Tales of game though. Legendia ranks as one of my personal favorites almost entirely on the strength of the soundtrack alone. The character designs being changed up for once in like, the entire series was refreshing as well. The biggest problem I have with the Tales of series is just that each game is so similar. Same character designer (though the actual designs are nice and varied) and same composer across every game since Symphonia excluding Legendia exhausts both the eyes and ears.
I have NEVER played a Tales game and after this review I am now ready to take the leap... Afffter, I beat, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War...

I personally really like the game but it has a lot of problems that make it difficult to recommend like:
-the movement: it’s kind of really bad, especially in older games (everything is kind of slow) it is a little bit better in MH:world and the newest game MH:rise is going to try to solve it with the new wirebug
-It gets reeeeally grindy (seriously I HATE the drop rates of everything they are ridiculous)
-The hit-boxes are kinda bs the older the game gets
If you decide to try it out I recommend either waiting for Monster Hunter:Rise for the switch or get Monster Hunter:world for the PS4
[some tips I would give are:
1.-don’t feel like you have to craft every single thing, grab an armor that you like and stick to it till you find another one you like (although ALLWAYS remember to upgrade it as much as you can), same with weapons, choose 1 or 2 types of weapon and make the elemental variants of each one.
And 2.- don’t be ashamed to go to the wiki if don’t know something, it’s actually encouraged by the community. If you need a certain item google the name of the game and the item you want and the first result (probably “kiranico”) should be good and also search the elemental weaknesses, they’re on the wiki and a lot of them are not that intuitive. There’s no need to suffer c: ; after all, you are a Hunter and as such you have to learn about your prey in order to prepare for the hunt.]
Ps: sorry for the info dump 😅 it’s just that I really like the game but it’s hard to approach if you don’t already love the series, because there’s a lot to learn :’D

This game was really fun. I like the easter eggs of fighting other Tales members. Velvet is fine but i Prefer the other cast members. Zaveid steals the show whenever he appears
I really like this game, and do consider it to be my favorite Tales of that I've played. It was so good to see Bandai Namco redeem themselves after they laid the turd that is Zestiria. On a side note, I played the PC version of Berseria and it is so clean looking and colorful. This PS4 version shown here looks yucky.
I liked the game a lot when it first came out, but i'm not sure its one of the better tales games the more I look back. The story was pretty weak at times and the gameplay was pretty good but also took some of the previous control the other games gave you. I wonder how other fans feel now that the smoke has cleared.
