Remember the series was based on a hugely popular movie (which was based on a novel), so a lot of people watching the original broadcast would have seen the movie and/or read the book and would already know the characters very well. The show’s writers needed for this opening sequence to hook those viewers right away. For example, a viewer who loved Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye would need to accept Alan Alda in the same role, or else that viewer would be lost right from the start. What the writers needed to do was not only get those viewers to accept Alan Alda, but also make them like Alda enough they would want to keep watching. And of course they had to do this with each character, since almost all of them were played by different actors than in the movie.
This intro to the TV series really could not have been more perfect in doing the job it needed to do.

    • @mlbrooks4066
      @mlbrooks4066 Před 8 měsíci

Yes, but the characters started to all blend together and turn into clones of Hawkeye as the series wore on. That tends to happen on TV series as they go on - the characters lose their distinctiveness. Even Major Winchester, who came in later as a snob, started to turn into Hawkeye. The show was still watchable, but I wish they had kept the characters separate.

The Vietnam war was still ticking away. Then coincidentally during the end of Vietnam, Nixon was on his way of getting DXed. If I'm not mistaken Nixon was ousted before the last helicopter left Vietnam.
Anyways, yeah it wasn't a good idea to produce a TV series about war then. Especially after _'Hogan's Heroes'_ and _'Gomer Pyle USMC'_ both successfully treaded around the subject in a careful manner.
Edit: yeah, I forgot about _'McHale's Navy'_ and _'SGT Bilko'_ ... as they were really the pioneers of sit-com military/war entertainment.

South Vietnam was secured with a DMZ just like S Korea. The US was to intervene or at least replace equipment if the NVA crossed the neutral zone.
Then the Democrat controlled 94th Congress passed the War Powers Act...remember it was LBJ and a Democrat congress that had authorized the beginnings of the war for the US in 1964.
Nixon resigned over WG. Ford took over. That was seen as an opportunity by the NVA. They restarted the war by crossing the DMZ. Congress refused to let Ford replace lost hardware or intervene as the treaty had called for. The SVA couldn't stand up to them. The remaining US observers, Saigon airport troops and embassy troops finally pulled out chaotically with SV civilians and SVA trying desperately to get a ride to the US fleet and Tokyo. Then SV civilians started fleeing by overloaded fishing boats. That was 75 if i recall.

Altman’s only previous film credit had been a critical and commercial failure, so directing MASH was kind of a Hail Mary pass for him. Due to its use on the TV series, the theme music wound up netting Michael Altman over $1 million in residual payments over the years.

I'm with you, I prefer "Funny 'MASH'". While I appreciate it for having a lot of great drama and stuff, I always preferred to leave the TV with a smile on my face. Plus, the Korean War lasted only a few years, anyway.
I'm one of those weirdos who pretend there are two different MASH continuities. I cut off the last couple of minutes of "Abyssinia, Henry" so the whole 3 season series of lighthearted, zany, goofy 'MASH' ends with Blake happily going home and the war ending soon after.
"Funny 'MASH'" is the "prime" continuity while the rest of the shows run takes place in an alternate universe where the Korean War lasted over a decade and the decade was a weird hybrid of the Fifties and Seventies.
This "Two Universes" concept can also explain away continuity errors concerning characters, their backgrounds, etc. I mean, how can an adorkable nerdy psychic kid regain his virginity (I think it was implied somewhere that Radar did 'do it' at one point in his life but in the seasons after 3, he's a complete ingenue who knew nothing of sex)?
I also like the idea of people being goofy as a means of warding off stuff like PSTD... and succeeding ... instead of succumbing with stuff about a dead baby being a chicken.
While I appreciate the show's entire run (even the silly first 3 seasons) for its message of "War is Hell" and how it messes you up, I confess to being a pushover for happy endings and hope. "MASH" caters to all temperaments.
I prefer "Funny MASH" because it shows people overcoming the darkness. It still states that war is hell, but it also shows people responding to the malefic darkness by laughing in its face. It's a nice, positive message.
I like seeing Hawkeye being a silly lovable but kind-hearted scamp and Klinger the silly weirdo who's always cooking up some zany scheme to get Section 8 (while being a fabulous proud crossdressing icon!). I like Burns being an annoying "ferret face" and Radar being a combo of innocent but naughty with genuine psychic powers. I like Henry as the befuddled head guy with the fisherman's hat.

My favorite show of all-time! I have the complete series on DVD and my kids wanted to watch it all the time. We used to play MASH trivia - and they would win!

I remember this show only by the theme music as i was too young to watch and understand it at the time. Grew up in the 80s and 90s and now as a grown man i come back to rediscover it for what it really was.

Fun fact: M*A*S*H was nearly cancelled after its first season due to poor ratings. It ranked 46th out of 85 shows during the 1972-73 season, with a 17.5 household rating and a 27 percent audience share, ranking third in its timeslot behind ABC's The F.B.I. (#29, 19.2 rating), and NBC's The Wonderful World of Disney (#9, 23.5 rating).

If you notice the closeup shot of the choppers when the MASH logo appears on screen, I think that's an unused shot from the film....the soldier's arm is dangling from the stretcher just like in the movie opening.

I recommend watching it online because a lot of cable TV channels that show M.A.S.H show the episodes cut.
For example the pilot episode if you watch it on TVland it does not have this intro it starts right at the choppers coming in.

thanks for showing, in 1972 i was 11, and a lot of us missed the opening. we didnt get to record and watch again untill the late 70's to the 80 when we got our first VHS recorder. with the r-runs that show today, they have started to play the t.v. show fully, with the parts cut for commercials, back in the way it was first aired. thanks for posting

I wasn't ever assigned to a CSH but I was assigned to the medical company of a FSB.
When we had wounded inbound the Dr.s (actually P.A.s) were at the treatment tent and the UNIT DENTIST was the triage officer. The 91Bs (medics) served as EMTs and transported patients to treatment as the Dentist directed.
