Today, the 10th January 2024, marks 20 years since my better half bought this Saxo VTR. Without it, I would not have my kids. I probably wouldn't have my job. I wouldn't have met her, and I wouldn't have been able to chav it up in 2024.

Had my Saxo VTR 13 years, (Pauline I named her after a random name on the numberplate that caused it to fail an Mot) she was my first car, and then I moved to Australia, I left it to a garage that I worked at, as a courtesy car.
My first 2 years insurance was just under £5800 quid, for a car worth 1500. And that was 2008 prices.
The garage added it to their fleet insurance for 12 quid a year...
I returned home, got the saxo back, and had many happy years with her, but she got retired and I bought a PUG 306 dubbed Pauline 2. I then moved to Australia again, and left the saxo back at the garage again.
I moved back from Oz again, got the saxo back a third time and took my Mrs (from NZ) all around the UK in it.
Then I shipped it to NZ.
So I was 3 of the saxo's 6 owners in the UK.
It's driven up the steepest streets in the world, both in Harlech Wales and Dunedin New Zealand BEFORE Mr Hubnut and his falcon!
Then in August 2020, she was written off by some dozy person in a Ford Territory. (small scratch and dent in the Ford)
I had shipped every single part I could think of with me to NZ... bonnet, wings, doors, rear bootlid, bumpers, door glass, brake pads and discs, lights, even a replacement radio, but alas, they said she was too far gone to fix...
So my beloved got written off but it's not the end of her story, I sold her to someone who's turned her into a race car in Auckland.
I miss that Saxo terribly, my wife hated it. (Small, noisy, dripping fluids everywhere, and the Saxo was the same.) and I wanted to keep it for my daughters first car, but unfortunately she'll have to find another shit box.
RIP Pauline. The one and only Mark 2 Saxo in New Zealand.

I left the UK just as this scene was hotting up, and didn't really appreciate them. Now I have an AX GT you can see how these were a development of that platform. Great video and great to see you've kept it this long. I have a VW beetle I purchased in 1994 still sat in my dad's garge in Ireland that was painted tropical green which was a cal look for a while. I use it for a few weeks a year when I go back and visit. I now have 5 cars I have owned over 20 years. Cheers Steve

As an owner of a MK1 Saxo VTS, I think these cars are a little overshadowed by far more 'quirky' Citroen models and often feel that I can't class myself as a true 'french car fan' because I've never had hydropneumatic suspension or yellow fog lamps... So I was delighted to see you do a video on one of these great little cars, great story behind it too!

    • @UPnDOWN
      @UPnDOWN  Před 5 měsíci +1

That's a great comment. There is a fair bit of badge snobbery, even within deeper Citroen circles. I suppose it's generational, but when the brand in question has the SM, DS, 2CV, CX etc in their back catalogue, anything 'mainstream' is going to struggle a bit. The BX was looked down on for years, even at CCC meets. It's only recently starting to float to the surface.
The Saxo isn't the most interesting, technically, so the Citroen crowd won't be too interested, but they're interesting from the POV of sales, marketing and youth culture. Probably Citroen's most mainstream car. But the Saxo is VERY French in its DNA. The suspension; the design under the skin...it's all very 80s Peugeot.

My dad brought a new 1997 red phase 1 Saxo VTS when I was 10, it was a very early one that came without the rear spoiler. Dad never modified it and did nearly 140k miles in it over 12 years but unfortunately he had an accident in 2009 which rote it off. That was our sole family car for many years and would take us (family of four with dog) on holidays with all our camping gear. It obviously left an impression on me as I ended up with a french hot hatch (Peugeot 208 GTi) which I've now had for 6 years and 65k miles.
    Thanks for the video.

Great story and one that I can relate to with the challenges of long term ownership and the way a car can get under the skin - we’ve had our Clio 182 from new, which will be 20 years in October, and in that time it has seen the arrival of kids, and has been written off (and resurrected!) twice! It is one of those things that is now a part of the furniture - it is well looked after, but not pampered and is still in daily duty. Just a brilliant antithesis to modern throwaway culture to keep these things going and not just chuck them away.

This bought back great memories. I had a VTR in the same silver colour as my 2nd car, as an 18/19 year old it was fantastic! I took mine from 65k miles to 125k in just over 3 years and mostly very trouble free, infact, I never changed the rear tyres from those miles either. I was doing 100 miles a day on the M25 in her, and lots of traffic light grand prix's haha. I put the minimal wear down to the fact it weighed so little :')

Really enjoyable video. The fact that the Saxo still looks as it did 20 years ago is brilliant. Love it when people take care of their cars for so long. If my BX wasn't so temperamental, I would probably be trying to do a similar thing with it. Now it is cocooned (very much literally wrapped in a blanket and plastic wrap) until I figure out how to fix it properly.

Brilliant Video Rich, a really nice example of a Saxo, testement to you the wife for looking after it, maintaining and improving it over 20 years. It's a car I need to drive or own in my life at some point as it's a car from my Yoof. I think if I had one in my Yoof it would have been Barry Boyed.... 😂😂
The nearest I got to a Saxo was selling insurance for the Yoof for a well known dealer chain with a yelllow sticker, used to sell insurance for a VTR for a 18 year old for something silly like £295 for a year then come renewal it was £2295.....

I was a young guy around the same time. 2001 I bought my dream car, a 1990 Corrado g-60 (couldn’t afford a Vr6). I absolutely loved that car. The only modification when I got it was lowering springs and adjustable shocks. I later did all the major mods to the supercharger and it was a blast. At the time I hung out with the Tuner crowd and some of them did the same wild and obnoxiously mods that I was seeing in a Max Power magazine at the local newspaper stand. I was kind of surprised that people in England were taking it a bit further than the crowd in the USA.

I remember driving an early Saxo as my then girlfriend had one new and I was very impressed with how it drove even for a base model
I was a Vauxhall fan back then and had a Corsa B which I loved after a Renault 5 but then I had a Citroen c3 new and I loved driving that car and always found it so comfortable on the commute I did back then!

I had an all but dead Allegro (1500) at the beginning of the 90's, no car (lived near Manchester and couldn't afford the insurance!) until 95, then had a 2l n.a. diesel Maestro until I wrote it off in 98, then bought a new 1.9 diesel Skoda Felicia estate - which needed a new gearbox within 5 years ...
I guess I missed the hot hatch / car modding scene!
My wife got a 97 Xsara 1.4 in 2002. I got an L reg Xantia 2l petrol hatchback in 2003 for £750 - it had about 140k miles and the suspension sank over a couple of hours, but otherwise worked - as it was the most knackered car when we moved in with my wife's parents in 2004, we didn't need a forth car and after fitting new discs and pads one pad with a tiny drop of brake fluid on it ruined a disc within a couple of months, it was disposed of. We traded in the Xsara (after it's power steering popped - damn heavy steering without assistance!) for a 1998 Volvo V70XC in 2005 ... After spinning it on a roundabout after a sudden downpour I realised that car had more power than I had talent so I traded it in for a Y reg Freelander in 2009. The 18mpg was hurting a bit too! 4wd petrol auto - who would have thought!
The auto gearbox on the Freelander gave up in 2012. After a 3 month fling with a high mileage 2005 55 plate 1.6 LX C5 estate (which spent half that time off the road and would cut out and refuse to start for 15 mins if you accelerated too quickly when it didn't feel loved - shame as it was a lovely car otherwise - apart from the glass tailgate hatch being bolted shut rather than have a catch, because LX spec!) I returned it and got a 58 reg Mazda 5. By the end of 2014 (having forgotten to service the car as it was hardly used whilst I commuted by train, then started driving to a new job) it needed a replacement engine (whoops!). 30k miles later around Easter 2017 the recon engine threw a piston after 3 hours at motorway speeds damaging the gearbox and aircon ... I've not had a Citroën since (though I keep looking at the C5 estates - I'm not greatly keen on the 2008+ shape, although I did see a 2016 Euro 6 diesel for sale recently ... If I had anything close to the 12k requested I might have been tempted!
The only cars since have been a 2006 Honda CRV (please don't hate me, I was looking a C4 Grand Picasso's and saw it ... this needed replacement suspension parts every MOT, then suffered from a dodgy injector so got sold to a friendly garage in 2021. After a couple of months this was replaced by my current car, a 58 reg Seat Altea XL, which is OK (140hp, 6 speed DSG), but just a bit boring.
Not boring is the 97 P reg RAV4 3 door auto my daughter bought for £800 in early 21, passed her test in it before finding 19mpg isn't great! My wife inherited it when her 02 reg RAV4's auto gearbox died for a second time. It's engine could do with some work as some of its horses have escaped. It has some dents / patches touched up with the wrong colour (could be a purple rust killer?). It also clunks when manoeuvring near full lock - I suspect the mechanism to unlock the 4wd has failed. Only ~63k miles, so both the oldest and the lowest mileage car we have!

At 17:00 you reminded me of my father's Ford Zodiac, which had features showing it was a transition model from the 1970 facelift: it had an earlier cooling system but it had the walnut dash of the 1970 facelift - but externally, it didn't have the trim strip along the waist that the facelifted cars did.

What a great video - The dealers round where i used to live had bodykit options and free insurance on the 1.1 Saxos around 97 or so to attract the young working lads and lassies into the dealerships - And it worked ! Every town had them - when the VTR and VTS came out the young had them in droves as well - They were light, nimble and fun - Now very few survive - that scrappage scheme in 09 culled a lot of them
Great video and it takes me back to good times with good friends, no social media, no worries and we were all free to tour the country ! Great wee cars !

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
      John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Great video, I had an AX Elation 1.5d and decided to part ex it for a VTR back in 1998. I had a Nova SR that I sold previously so wanted another warm hatch. I had planned on a 2nd hand one, but the deal was better to buy new with the free insurance etc. My first new car was a red S reg VTR. I loved that car, my dad had it off me and was an old boy racer for a while. Sadly got sold and then written off a few weeks later. Great car, I recently found an old wheel that I kerbed going sideways off a roundabout that we swapped out for a new one in 1999!

Unfortunately, I lost it after less than 2 years on a silly crash... then I made my biggest (automotive) mistake: getting a Xsara VTS HDi😭. Awful, clumsy and troublesome, 2 years later (March 2002) I swapped it for an R50 Mini Cooper -- still my daily driver.

@@UPnDOWN Right... probably not on purpose or consciously. But it being located under the passengers seat (EU) it will be in the way of spillage both from the passenger and from leaking cans or bottles on the floor in the back. The signs were there, brown/blackish and very sticky with a sweet taste 😝.
I actually washed the boards in lukewarm soap water and let it dry for a couple of days. It worked for some time but finally a had to purchase a refurbished ECU from the UK. You are soo much better at providing that kind of services than we are here in Sweden. It ran perfectly untill I sold it at 210000 miles. It was a 1987 EU spec without catalytic converter and produced around 170 hp on a rolling road test with a modified stainless exhaust. It passed 100 km/h on the clock in second gear. Very nice!
