I just finished packing for my first Plein Air outing this weekend. I watched many similar YT videos on how to pack to build my list of things to take. Thanks for posting. I like the quick close extensions on the tripod and appreciate the attachment to the tripod for a light diffuser or umbrella. Thanks for the details on the panel holder.

Great Video! SO many good ideas. I would also add S hooks and keep in mind that bugs are attracked to very dark clothing, medium shades are better, never black or navy or brown.

oh my GOOOOOOOOOOOSH! it's a TON to go through if you just want inexpensive and easy in case you don't LIKE PLEIN air...
Hey Lisa...yes....there are simpler options for sure. You can just get a light weight easel (aluminum by Dick Blick), a $10 camping stool to hold your palette, don't use an umbrella and paint in the shade, carry your panel in a pizza box with doubled over duck tape to hold it on there so it won't touch anything, throw your paints and brushes in a tote bag with your brush cleaner in there etc...and off you go. No backpack, expensive pochade box etc... You can do that for sure. I recommend that until you think you like it. You'll spend more like $50. I hope that helps. 🙂
@@mccampbellartstudio yes, it does...i think it's worth all that $ IF you've done this enough to know you want to continue. I'm just experimenting, still not comfortable in the past 50 years to paint outdoors, stresses me out with light changing but i have to get out of my perfectionistic realism and loosen up ON THE FLY! 10 months later i have ordered one. :)
You forgot your chainsaw in case you need to build a log cabin but I am impressed how you got the table in your backpack.
Hahaha....that made me laugh out loud. Well, if I'd packed a whole big roll of Duck tape, there's no telling what I could build with that!

Thanks for this video. I’ve just recently seen a couple videos showing this pochade box up close and was surprised by a couple things. I’m wondering it is will close with the panel holders in place? (I know one would likely extend outward, but would the palette side and panel side still fully close, with no obstruction, so you could transport those panel holders in place rather than loose?) I was also surprised to see that the metal holders for the side shelves are separate from the shelves, resulting in even more loose individual parts. Can you see a reason for this? Are there other side accessories which would be sold without the metal magnetic piece, so that you would want to keep the metal piece separate, able to be used with multiple accessories? I also noticed another artist using large elastic bands (from New Wave) to hold all the parts together in careful stack for transportation. It seemed to work alright.
You know what, that has been an issue for me too--the loose parts. I happen to have a zippered bag that went with an old laptop computer and so I use that to hold all the metal parts. But no, you cannot close the box with the metal panel holders in it. You remove them as you do the side panel holders too. I got used to it but it does make for more "parts". The rubber bands can work but that seems a little strange to me. I think New Wave needs to come up with a solution to that. Thanks for bringing that up! And happy painting.
Thank you for an Incredibly helpful video. I recently purchased a u.go pochade box set-up that will probably be used more in my studio than outdoors as I'm not as mobile as I used to be! I'm interested in having holders for stretched canvases as well as boards and possibly for the magnetic extension for larger works. Who does one contact to get these options? Actually used the "board holders" on a 1/2-inch canvas that held pretty well, but would like the option. There were a number of things you showed that I would be interested in, even if primarily for a home setting.

No, I don't carry a table. I just had that for the video to make it easy to show what I had in my backpack.
Do you still use the guerilla painter umbrella with this box? It's been hard to find and has terrible reviews, but I'm looking for something to use with this box.
Hi there, I now use this umbrella by Artwork Essentials. It can extend very high which is nice and is broad. I love it. My only complaint is that if a strong wind comes along, it can pull your entire kit over. So I tied a rope to it and attached it in a way that it cannot do that. Balsa wood is a fragile wood it would be broken before you arrived.. Bass wood would be more likely. Too much time is spent on the assembly of everything. Is it not the point to be ready to paint upon arrival? Not to have to put your everything together from scratch. Too much is needed just to begin. The box needs a bit more design if you are using rubber bands.
Hello Tina and thanks for commenting. They are made from Baltic Birch wood and very light weight. If I said balsa, I misspoke.I love the light weight aspect of this box--feels like a MacBook laptop computer in that way. I don't think the assembly time takes more than about a minute to do. The only thing I think they need to improve is that there needs to be a system for carrying the small parts--some sort of bag or way to attach them to the outside of the pochade box.
Tripod is so wobbly, too many pieces to potentially lose. IMO an extreme expense for something you can make for under 20 bucks
Yes, there are simpler ways to do this. It's just the one I use. There are many choices out there. If you can make this for under 20 bucks, then I salute you.
Do also you carry a microwave with you. Way to much stuff. You're taking the fun out of it. Oh wait you need a kawasaki mule...lol
Hey there. Thanks for commenting. I would much rather present a fully packed plein air kit than not. Everyone who goes out in the field will soon figure out what they need, and what they feel comfortable lugging around. Since I teach plein air workshops, I carry everything but the kitchen sink or microwave as you said. That way I'm not left flat footed when there's an issue and someone has left their stuff in the car. I like to be prepared. But to your point, there are probably lots of videos on plein air equipment and packing in a minimal way--this is not that video. My advice is to take the best and leave the rest. Too many parts and too much fiddling with the U-go’s. Alla Prima Pochade boxes….functional, simple to set up and comfortable to use. Also built in wet panel storage in the box.

@@mccampbellartstudio I tried the U-go . Trim for sure but just too many parts, too much fiddling to set up and kind of like a sail with not much wind. The Alla Prima Pochade boxes by Ben Hagget are much better and more practically designed and set up in the time it takes you to attach it to a tripod. Both full box and Lite (like the U-go). And can carry 2-4 wet panels internally.
@@trappedindc8678 I haven't tried the Alla Prima Pochade box. I agree that the parts are loose and I end up using a large ziplock bag to hold them which feels unorganized and messy. But I do like other things about it. I will have to check out the one you like. That's what makes these videos so great is seeing what resonates with artists and learning about other products. @@mccampbellartstudio for sure. I wanted to see what all the hullabaloo I was hearing about the U-go boxes so picked one up. Didn’t take to it. I have 2 older model AllaPrima boxes, the Yellowstone and Yellowstone Lite with the Panel Piggyback that fits both. Ben was the first to use the friction hinges seen on lots of boxes now and incorporate the magnets seen everywhere. He has made huge upgrades to the boxes since I got my early ones. And I now have 2 more on the way. A Belly River Lite and a regular size Blackfoot. Based on the U-go you have the new Yellowstone Lite is about that size.
