Brahms / Heifetz: Contemplation

The original lyrics by Klaus Groth mention the communicative power of poetry despite the limitations of language to express thoughts. I think of the song as a meditation on the creative process, with the goal of expressing internal thoughts more deeply than language easily can. As with sounds from a good instrument, such thoughts emerge best under holistic considerations after the altar is prepared, without being forced.
Heifetz arranged it in San Clemente, Sept. 20, 1933. The piano part suggests ocean waves and the ubiquitous slides written in the violin part remind me of seagulls. It seems appropriate to the peaceful surroundings of the idyllic seaside town.
