      @@PaintedPaperStudio Thanks for the fun video…just a tip for new people, best not to lay it on any textured paper. If you want to use both sides keep them on a flat surface.. and not the acetate it comes with. This can create bubbles that are hard to remove. I use a piece of heavy smooth paper on both sides. It is easy to keep it smooth. To condition a new or old plate… I use about a tablespoon or a bit more to cover plate of Baby oil, and massage it gently with hands into the plate and then leave it to soak in approx 30mins to 1hr till not shiny. Now Use a plain piece of Printer paper (80gsm) to pull up as your first pull to get off any excess oil but won’t be any if left to dry. I have been using my 12 x 14 for about 8yrs still perfect! Such fun! Cheers

    One day I put an order in with Amazon for an 8x10/5x7 gel plate combo special they offered. They accidentally sent me a 12x12. At first I was mad because I needed the small sizes, but then I realized the cost difference and Amazon’s screw up turned out to be a happy accident. I love the 12x12 and I’ve since bought some beautiful 12x12 stencils. I would have had to pay waaaay more for a 12x12, but didn’t have to 😉😁

    Oh Jackie, wish I had seen this and your tutorial over three years ago when I started using a gel plate! Never washed or conditioned it - just started using it and for a whole month (good thing I am really pig headed 😅) I used it several hours a week and was really upset at how "not good it was and how I wasted money" until it was broken in and I started getting amazing prints! Thinking leaning about the amount of paint needed and proper drying time also helped!! I will one day invest in a 12x12! It's a dream of mine! p.s. being away for a while was great in that I get to watch you work twice in a week! 😊

    Wow! Gorgeous prints!! They were definitely speaking my color language. Funny, I got a Gel Press 12x12 years ago. Prior to that, I'd been working on a Gelli Arts 5x5. I'd never broken in the Gelli Arts plates (because those plates do multiply!) because I didn't know to do that at the time. Anyway, I couldn't get paints to stop beading up on the Gel Press plate to save my life and I thought I'd made a huge mistake in buying it. I went on to other artistic endeavors and came back to printing a couple of months ago. Now that Gel Press plate works great! The moral of the story... if you don't want to break in your plate, just leave it for a few years. ;-)

    What I love about gel prints is that the quick, blended chuck-it-on pieces look like finished pieces of abstract art 😍 It takes me weeks in my art journal to create textured, layered abstract art and you manage it within minutes on the gel plate. It’s alchemy 😍.

    Great advice, Jackie. I just had a gelli session a few days ago and got a few prints. Then, everything started sticking to the plate. The wet strength tissue tore, wouldn't come up, so I put the whole thing in warm soapy water. I got a little paint and tissue up with a wet paper towel, a little more with mineral oil, but what really worked was Goo Gone. I figured the plate needed conditioning anyway as it has been a while. I will try your texturing to get the plate going again as I never considered this as part of the process.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone wash or condition their plate first - is that something that's recommended by Gel Press or is that something you just discovered on your own? I love the giant gel plate as well. The prints you pulled from that one are really awesome. I had no idea to use medical exam paper or tea paper for pulling prints, but guess what - I know now. I love the weight of the papers and how translucent they are. I thought you weren't gonna be able to pull any of those prints after leaving the papers suctioning to them all night, but was pleasantly surprised you were able to pull both successfully. I've never seen anyone leave the papers overnight. When paints have dried on the plate I've seen people spritz with a light layer of water or go over with some other kind of translucent medium or just more paint and wait a few secs then get a successful pull. Anyway - you got lots of great backgrounds - I can imagine them as wall paintings, end papers for handmade books, designs for like cardstock papers, cards and more. I particularly like the effects of the silicone molds on the plates and I might have to get me some of those. Just lots of creative ideas flowing here so thanks. Before I got my gel plate I actually used just a regular silicone mat as my ghetto gel plate and pulled some decent prints, but I'm glad I was able to finally afford the real thing. I haven't used it yet because I'm sort of into miniatures and journals and stuff atm, but can't wait to dive into the plate at some point and start making cool prints. I think I might have to get that 16 x 20, too!

      Hi Pia, I'm so happy you're here! Washing the plate is recommended prior to first use, conditioning is a "Jackie" thing. I do it because I know, at some point, I will wash and condition my plate and I want to know exactly how this plate/this brand responds to the treatment in terms of new pulls. Like you, I was nervous about leaving the medical exam paper on the giant gel plate overnight, but I am very happy with the results. I love that you experimented with the silicone mat - when I got my first gel plate and saw what it could do - my mind went into overdrive with the possibilities. I even considered trying to pull prints off a mouse pad 😂😂😂 Thank you for watching and for taking the time to write. 🥰

    Great video, thank you! I've never washed a gel plate. With my 1st plate, I was using fluid paint which separated on the plate creating webby-like texture and I really like this effect. Just bought a larger plate but haven't used it yet. Is not washing it a bad thing - will it not last as long?

    • @PaintedPaperStudio
      @PaintedPaperStudio  Před měsícem

      No, not washing it won’t hurt the plate, it will just take longer to get clean pulls. It’s always a better idea to wash it first (unless you’re too excited like me).

    love your channel for the everything of it. just colour palette alone is such a joy, let alone your actual art.
    do u have any advice for lacing? when the paint pits and separates, kinda like when using fluids, even tho it's heavy body. i have 3 plates, n 2 of them didn't have an issue at the beginning, but the third one started w this issue as well. which leads me to think it might be my paint, but i cant see anything wrong w my supplies.
    is there a way to condition the surface or add a medium to keep the spread of paint uniform and firmly adhered to the plate so it wouldn't move or lace...

    • @PaintedPaperStudio
      @PaintedPaperStudio  Před měsícem +1

      Hi SJ - this is a great question. I would probably try experimenting with a few things, like mixing a heavy body with gloss or matte medium and then spreading it on in smaller sections. Keep doing that until you've gone over the plate several times that way. The only way I have ever been able to get the lacing to go away is to keep working the gel plate with more paint and pulls. Another thing you could try is to put a layer onto your plate, let it dry, then go over it with another layer of paint, put some paper on the wet layer, and leave it overnight (like the last pull of the video.) The next day, pull the print and then try layering and printing again - you may find that the lacing has stopped. I hope this helps! 🥰

      @@PaintedPaperStudio tysm. ill troubleshoot more and if/when i find a reliable solution ill leave a comment here. I'm an immunobiochemist and im taking this troubleshooting personally. my knowledge of chemistry of art supplies is extensive so it's driving me nuts that my preliminary chemistry-related solutions have not worked. n tbh, it's v hard to find the exact raw materials sometimes cz they're proprietary. I'm 100% convinced that if gesso wasn't a historical art supply we'd never know what's in it. i can make 1L of vegan high quality gesso for $15 because i know exactly what to use and substitute (acrylic resin instead of rabbit skin glue).

Is it correct to assume we want to get the smooth versions? And... do you also have a video on the several ways you use this paper? Thanks so much!

      Hi Bob! If you are watching the videos on a TV, it's nearly impossible to get to the supply list. However, if you are on a computer, tablet or phone, you can find it right below the video where you see the view count ...and more. Click the "and more" and the entire description will open - the supplies are listed there, but you'll have to scroll down. To answer your medical exam paper question - it's actually the crepe-style paper that goes transparent. Isn't that counterintuitive?! Here is a direct link to the paper I use amzn.to/3vnBstG 🥰
