- If you want to create better art or don’t know where to start, this might be your first step.
This week I’m getting loose with some acrylic paints while I start and finish two complete painted papers.
This is an amazing exercise if you’re in a creative rut or are hesitant to get started.
You only learn to create better, more authentic art when you allow yourself days like this to expand your creative language.
Join me for some fun!

⭐Best Viewing Experience for YOU ⭐
Every creative person has different needs. Here are the different ways to enjoy these videos.
- Some enjoy hearing me explain my process. If that’s you, make sure your volume is on.
- Others prefer to read my process through the closed caption subtitles. If that’s you, turn on the CC at the bottom right of the video.
- Some don’t want to hear my voice at all (that’s ok 😀). If that’s you, turn the volume off and watch.
I have had every video electronically translated through close captioned subtitles into 12 different languages to be able to reach and connect with as many people as possible. If your language is not represented, please let me know.
Note: at this time, I do not have the ability to have my emails translated. If you sign up for my mailing list, you will receive mail from me in English.

You really did free me up! I've had my grandsons watch your video too and now we're all painting! Thank you so much...
Oh my gosh, Eileen - how wonderful! I bet you all had a wonderful time painting together. 🥰
Jackie, love listening to your videos. You are enthusiastic about your work and always so into the creative process. Will keep watching! Thanks for posting your work.
Hi Ginger! Thank you so much for watching and understanding that the creative process gets me excited. I love sharing the joy! Thank you for being here!🥰
Thanks for talking about the struggle and reminding me to keep pushing through. Both pieces are inspiring and beautiful.
Thank you very much, Jennifer - keep pushing. 🥰
Bravo! So inspiring! Can't wait for more fun projects!
Thank you, Maureen! More fun is on the way 🥰
I absolutely love your colour choices Jackie! Cohesive is the word i'm looking for. So beautiful ❤
Thank you Sandra - that was a really fun one to work on. 🥰
I love the way you encourage others to play, have fun and experiment with paint, paper, tools and colors. You always inspire me to go to stuff. Thanks so much for sharing. 😍😍😍
Catherine, thank you for always having such lovely things to say. I appreciate you. 🥰
This looks like so much fun! And I love your philosophy about just getting in there & doing it without thinking too much. I’m my own worst enemy & critic, keeping me from just starting…fear of making mistakes or wasting products…looking forward to more of your videos-thank you! Subbed 👍. And I just realized how much I need to make an art bulletin board in my new craft room!
Yes! Get in there and start using those products - they want you to! 😍 And yes, the bulletin board is essential for me. I would love to have one entire wall be a bulletin board. Thank you so much for being here and subscribing. I appreciate you! 🥰
P.S.S The painting turned out so beautifully!! I love the movement of the shapes and colors and the way they move the eye around the painting! Magnifique, Jackie!!
Thank you, Deanna! That medical paper should just be renamed to Wonder-Paper. I can't believe how much weight, pressure and stretching it put up with! Thank you again for sharing it with me! 🥰
Love how you painting and reacting with your brushstrokes. It’s sometimes hard to block out the negativity. Thanks for the encouraging words that I needed today. You’re the BEST! 😍
Thank you very much, Trina. Blocking the negativity is the best gift we can give ourselves. 🥰
now i know what I'm going to do with that canvas in the wardrobe in Spain!
Don't you just love it when you you have a blank canvas waiting for you in a far away place?! Sounds like heaven to me 🥰
Ooh this looks so satisfying and lovely all at once. I love your teaching style ❤
Thank you very much, Anna! 🥰
Glad I found your channel. I enjoy how you show us 🎉
Hi Bonnie! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video. 🥰
What a wonderful exercise in art. I planned to make some flowers but I didn't know what kind of paper I should use. I'm going to try it your way.
Oh Hedda - what a great way to use the papers! 🥰
It always makes me smile to see how much fun you are having. I was worried for the large painting, but it came out amazing, I'm sure any viewer would enjoy staring at it for a while. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Kim, I am so happy you are here again. I was worried for the large painting too, but honestly, that's why I love working large - it's a rollercoaster of emotion. 🥰
Gorgeous !!!!
Thank you, Diane! 🥰
Love this! Forgetting that voice that once (actually several times!) told me that artists are junkies and starving (I wanted to be a fashion designer)... That I had to be better to do better than that. Even though I really was an artist all along... Now in my 50s I am letting go of that voice... Finding my own truth, my own voice and my own passion again! Maybe I could have done it earlier but I like to believe that everything happens when the time is right!
This medical paper is a great idea! Wonder how it would behave in collage and on the gel plate! I always give/sell my stuff mentioning that it is not archival. I don't have the desire for anything to last forever - I obviously adjust my prices accordingly.
I agree, Chloé - I think everything does come in it's own time. So happy you're letting go of that negative nellie voice. 🥰
What a fabulous new dimension - creative endeavors counting as exercise!
Right, Ruth?! Anytime I can make exercise more fun, I'm going to do it 😍
Thank you loved that.
Thank makes me very happy, June! 🥰
Amazing... I am looking forward to giving this a try ❤❤❤
Do it Melissa - you'll have so much fun with it. 🥰
Wonderful! What's not to love about art when it's even increasing our body fitness level 😍😉?And along with the encouragement we're provided on your channel that feels so nourishing for the heart and mind: what should stop us from just having fun and play with the colours we love and exploring those that we might fear a little? We can only win ... fascinating insights, joyful discoveries and inspiration for the next playtime session! Thank you for this video and your words, Jackie!
Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💜
And thank you for your kind words, Queen. I'm off to the studio for today's "workout."😂🥰
Thank you so much I am going to have a go.❤
I love hearing that, Maria! 🥰
Well done, Jackie. I had a great time watching you PLAY. And I want to say, that the German translation here is totally consistent. The word "austoben" is exactly what I would choose for your action. Your comments also are so encouraging: concerning materials, tools or attitude. I love to visit your channel, because it´s learning with so much fun! 🥰 Thank you, Britta
Britta, thank you - always. I am thrilled to hear that the translation is fairly accurate. I have the videos translated into 17 different languages, and I don't speak any of them to know if they are accurate or not. Thanks for letting me know. Now, get back to whatever beautiful piece you are working on. 🥰
I love this 🙏🏻
Thank you very much, Mark! 🥰
love your work! awesome!
Thank you Maureen! 🥰
Soooo kewl❤
Thank you, Mary! 🥰
Beautiful!
Thank you, Peggy!
I really love this session, my kind of art!
Thank you Fran - it's just plain fun! 😍
Well after a couple weeks of watching CZcams videos, most of them your videos, I can’t stop painting paper. I have paintings on the go, deadlines and pottery to finish and all I can do is paint paper!
I haven’t even started with my gel plate. I’ve watched your course, thank you very much, ordered a few needed things and I can get started anytime. But I’m not nearly finished with hand painting paper. This is dangerous stuff but oh so much fun!! Thanks for all the great instruction and inspiration. It’s greatly appreciated 😊
"This is dangerous stuff" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Are you saying my videos should come with a warning lable?! 😂 I am so happy that you're enjoying the videos and that you got the gel plate class - you'll have fun with it for sure, but in the meantime, enjoy the heck out of those papers! 🥰
A really lovely peace !! I do love it. Thanks so much to encourage us.💖🙏
Thank you, Evelyne - I just love sharing. 😊
Incredible! What lovely colours. I thought to begin with, there may have been too many colours but the way you have blended them and the techniques used have brought them all together. Love it.
For a minute I thought I had too many colors too 😂 But that's why I love painting papers - I can test my limits. Thank you for always having such nice things to say, Julie. 🥰
As always I thoroughly enjoyed watching you create and the results were breathtaking. Thank you for sharing your time and talent. ♥♥♥
Thank you very much, Paul! 🥰
Love this!
Thank you, Donna! 🥰
Love this thank you
You're welcome, Jane. Thank YOU for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. 🥰
Thank you Jackie for the encouraging talk, just love both paintings, will be trying this.
Hi Christie! Thank you for your kind words. I hope you have as much fun doing it as I did. 🥰
Hi Jackie, thank you for this video, it was just what I needed today. I have been doing a pet portrait for my daughter and was so fed up as it had to be quite precise and fiddly, then you came online. So portrait finished, newspaper out and with great abandon I started to put what was left on my palette any way I felt liked onto the newspaper and it was such a wonderful awakening experience. Great joy no thinking just do it.! I am sure some parts will be useful sometime. Thanks again x
Oh my goodness - perfect timing! I have an image of you painting papers fast and furiously while the pet looks on 😂😍🥰
👏👏👏
Thank you 🥰
Luv the colors you choose! Just received some new Golden colors Ive been wanting to play with. I also see you have Sarah Renae Clarke & marimekko boxes. (Great minds think alike.) I use both for color inspiration. I also like to ‘walk’ through the MOMA COLLECTION POSTCARDS.
Some days the only creativity I have time for is the color cube. I'm going to create some videos using them for inspiration - and yes, great minds 😍
Great video - many thanks 😊
You're welcome - thank you for taking the time to watch and leave a comment. 🥰
Another fun session Jackie 😍 🙏🏻
I noticed that most of the layers are thin which builds a beautiful and coherent depth over multiple applications. I think I’ve been to heavy on my applications of acrylic and watercolour and wonder why they always look a total mess.
Can’t wait for your workshop to be released, I would be very interested 😊
Thank you for another wonderful video 😊🙏🏻🤗
Thank you, Andrea! I feel like I have a pretty heavy hand when I use brushes, that's why you'll usually see me start with some type of tool (brayer or catalyst wedge). They force the paint to go on fairly thin so I can see how the colors will (or won't) work together. So glad you liked this session. 🥰
I’m thinking spiral macaroni would make some beautiful marks.
Ms. Chigger - you are a girl after my own heart! I think spiral macaroni for mark making is a genius idea 🥰
These are fabulous outcomes! So inspired to try it out!
I'm so happy to hear that, Annette! I hope you do give it a try. 🥰
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing. Will definitely try it.
Go Patricia! I hope you do try it - it feels so good to just let go. 🥰
Yeah I just signed up 😊
YAY🎉
Love, love, love this loose painting session! The line work with the Posca pens really works for me. Off topic…I noticed the color cube behind you…I just got both of these cubes and haven’t used them yet. How do you use them? Do you have any videos where you used the color cube cards!
Hi Robin! The squiggles I get out of the Posca pens makes me so happy - I'm glad you like them too. I am working on some upcoming color cube inspired videos 😃 so please stay tuned 🥰
You made me want to paint again just for fun! Thank you so much and you made me laugh when you mentioned pulling of tape is like"art porn"😂😂😂 !! Love Do from paris🗼
Hi Do! I can get a bit cheeky with my references sometimes, but I wouldn't have another phrase to express the excitement I feel while pulling tape. 😂😂😂 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave me a note. 🥰
I heard somewhere that if you put gel medium on before the tape, it will peal off no problem. I haven't tried it yet.
Interesting, I'll try it next time, Myrna 🥰
Also.... Forgot to mention, tried gelli printing on dried baby wipes - unexpected surface to paint on! And the results are quite interesting!!!
I bet it's interesting - please post it on IG so I can see 😍
Doing it tomorrow. I did something similar today so I have a setup. Tomorrow it will be watercolor paper and acrylics.
Excellent, Beverly! No set up time means more exploring time - have a blast tomorrow! 🥰
Beautiful painterly fun ❤❤❤
Indeed, Cindy - so happy to see you 🥰
I have used beet juice in my artjournal which was fun, dried pretty sticky though so ended up using foil to cover it🤣
This is really good information, and nice pivot Isis! Did the foil stick to the beet juice itself, or did you add an adhesive? I've had problems before using instant coffee in my journals - so sticky! I had good luck using Dorland's wax over it to stop the "stick." Thank you so much for being here. 🥰
No adhesive Jackie, just the juice. we don't do instant coffee but I can just imagine; have used coffee bags though and coffee grounds as well as teabags, turmeric, ginger; most of it gives a nice soft wash🥰; thank you for your video's as well, very helpful for channeling my creativity into a different direction!!@@PaintedPaperStudio
Ready set go! Thanks for letting me know your new post was up. Yesterday a long time friend told me one of my me pieces was "cute"! OH no. It was like a stab in my heart. I know she didn't mean anything cruel so have just moved on. Your comment in this video was perfect timing. Thank you. Susan
It’s the littlest things, isn’t it Susan. Here we toil away, sometimes bravely, sometimes fearfully - only to be told it’s “cute.“ * sigh * I hope you know, in your heart, that yours is a masterpiece! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio I think somewhere between cute and masterpiece will work! I am just fortune to have close to masterpiece during my many years. I have received recognition on many occasions starting soon after I graduated from the University of Maryland. I stopped exhibiting and entering shows about 10 years ago after i received First Place/Blue Ribbon in a state wide exhibit for professional artists in NC and First Place and People's Choice in another show in NC. The work i did at that time was in oils and highly realist. Now i have returned to my true love...non representational. I go between pen/ink with colored pencil which is very structured and collage, gelli printing and mixed media. I can do the drawing while listening to audiobooks in the evening and the painting collage messy work in the studio during the day. This way i get both sides of my brain exercised! Thank goodness i have art in my life. Now i am extra fortunate to have found you on CZcams. Life is good. 🎨
WOW, Susan - what wonderful accomplishments! And what courage to return to your true love. I'm so happy you're here @@SleepyCatCottage 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio i have worked hard and getting recognition is always rewarding. Glad i found you and we share some of the same joys in our art worlds. See you soon. Susan
So delicious 😮❤
Thank you, Suzi! 🥰
P.S. I notice you received your Color Cube, yeah!! I was waiting forever to get mine!!
The wait was worth it 🥰
Very nice❤❤ new subscriber here
Thank you for your support, Rain Cloud 🥰
this is a great idea! thanks! btw, what paper are you using in your wet palette tray? Please help!
Hello Madame! It is a sheet of glassine paper (I just put it at the bottom of the supply list in the description). I just put paper towels underneath and my acrylics stay wet a lot longer. 🥰
How do you not get mud when using all those different colors?
Hi Dharla! The trick is to use super thin layers that dry fast. Also, if you keep the mixed colors on your palette clean (not muddy), they generally stay "clean" on the paper. 🥰
Is the airbrush medium you were using similar to a poring medium⁉️
Hi Reni - great question! No, airbrush medium is really thin, almost like water. It's designed to make heavy body acrylics and fluid acrylics thinner so ithey can pass through the tip of an airbrush. The reason I love it is that it protects the strength of the pigment, and the integrity of the binders that hold it together. Hope that helps. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio thank you 🤩
