Chuck Berry is nicknamed the "Father of Rock & Roll". "Johnny B. Goode" is one of his most famous songs from 1958. He had a lot of hits in the 50's-60's such as "Maybellene", "Roll Over Beethoven", "Rock & Roll Music", "No Particular Place To Go", "You Never Can Tell", "Nadine" etc. He was known for his guitar solos, duckwalk & showmanship.

I know this is 5 months old but I can’t help but comment! There would be no rock and roll without this man! There would be no Elvis without this man! The way he moved on stage while playing is classic!!

There's a difference between the father of something and the king of it. A father creates, a king dominates. Chuck helped create rock and roll. Elvis dominated. See the difference?

He was the first person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was inducted on the day it opened. He is regarded as being the primary inventor of rock music.
You're right. Before the Beatles, it was exceptionally unusual for a performer to write his own music. To the songs mentioned in the Wikipedia, I would add "Sweet Little Sixteen."

Yup, Back to the Future. That's the whole thing about the scene where, while Marty is singing Johnny B. Goode, the other guy from the band (Marvin Berry) is back stage, on the phone, calling his cousin, Chuck and saying, "Remember that new sound you was looking for? Well, listen to this!" Then he holds the phone up so Chuck can hear the music. Hence, Chuck goes on to record the song, takes all the credit for it and.... well, as they say.... the rest is history. I always wondered if the writer of Forest Gump got this "future foreshadowing" idea from Back to the Future.

Back to the Future is probably my favorite movie ever. Interesting fact about the movie, but the band playing at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance is The Penguins, and they sing "Earth Angel." That is actually the name of the band that originally sang that song, and their lead singer was in face Marvin Berry, the cousin of Chuck Berry. So, when he picks up the phone and says, "Chuck, this is Marvin...your cousin, Marvin Berry. You know that new sound you're looking for, well listen to this," it's actually correct in their relationship and all of that, and it implies that Marty McFly playing that song is what gave Chuck Berry the idea for it. Great part of the movie for music nerds.

Roll over Beethoven was a big hit for the Beatles in the mid sixties. Both versions are very good. Although it is hard to compete with Chuck Berry.

I'll hardly be the first to say it but it bears repeating: While no single artist can ever claim to be the sole inventor of any genre of music, the case of Chuck Berry and rock & roll comes about as close as any case ever has to fulfilling that description.
He was the great funnel in the history of that genre. Every type of rhythm & blues, jump blues, boogie-woogie, country swing, etc. that came before him, somehow passed through him, and every single variety of Rock & Roll that came after him, descends from him, either directly or indirectly.
Probably only Little Richard has a fully paid up competing claim here, and, given the overwhelmingly central role of guitar in rock history, I still think Mr. Berry comes out every so slightly ahead. He is the closest thing to a father that rock & roll has, and, in 1958, that baby, though only a few years old, was already dancing up a storm.

I was only three months old when this was recorded. Chuck definitely was the man. He was excellent, attractive, showman, and is the only person that should be called king of rock. Elvis was good as well. But Chuck was the trailblazer.

Chuck Berry wrote so many hit songs. He had an album called the Great 28 but it was missing about 5 or 6 hits. If you've seen Pulp Fiction, that's him and his song You Never Can Tell used in the dance contest scene. The studio version of Johnny B Goode is so much better. Roll Over Beethoven is a classic. His best video is You Can't Catch Me. It's the studio song with him moving and lip syncing to it. But he does all his classic moves, including the duck walk. If you've seen AC/DC, you'll see where Angus got his moves.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is who actually created Rock N Roll; Ike Turner made it a bit better; Chuck Berry made it relatable to the masses and upped the guitar playing element beyond what anyone had seen back then.
