  • Zadok the Priest, HWV 258, is a coronation anthem composed by George Frideric Handel using texts from the King James Bible. It is one of the four Coronation Anthems that Handel composed for the coronation of George II of Great Britain in 1727, and has been sung at every subsequent British coronation service. It is traditionally performed during the sovereign's anointing.
On this occasion it is sung by the choir of Westminster Abbey and the choristers of the Chapel Royal at the Royal Maundy Service at Westminster, in 2011.

The organ accompaniment is beautiful - I like it much better than the orchestral versions I have heard. The narrator said "So, lets enjoy it". I would have enjoyed it more without his talking over the beginning. Then he does the same to the following organ interlude.

Handel dropped the German umlaut and pronunciation of his name when he moved to England from Italy, having spent several years there after he left Germany as a very young man; he spent most of his life in England.
Handel spelled his name in the English fashion as you can see on every single extant signature on his manuscripts, letters and his will, and the case is exactly the same as the ‘French’ composer Lully who abandoned Lulli and all his Italian background after he moved to Paris.
Its odd how some people seem to still use the German form of Handel, but never the Italian form of Lully.
UK’s fine today, but you need to be careful about backdating it as there are was the Union of the crowns of Scotland and England in 1603, various Acts of Union particularly in 1707 and 1801, changes of name, and the secession of part of Ireland in 1922.
(Some people can be a bit touchy though about how they define themselves, though probably not more or less so than can be found in most other countries).

I think it's because it's the choir of the abbey..so it's religious and so there's no women

Tradition. It is the Abbey. A Royal "peculiar" meaning it is outside the Diocese and within the control of the Monarch, not the Bishop of London. The boys attend a boarding school on the Abbey grounds. Do you grouse about the Sistine Chapel choir of boys and men at the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome?

The monarchy actually generates a significant amount of money for the British economy, far more than it costs the taxpayer to maintain it.

The British, not just the English people, contribute something like 80p a year towards the monarchy. However, look at the tourism it brings, and the thousands of jobs it creates, and the income.

Nobody expects you to accept that the different countries in the world (especially those with origins way more ancient compared to yours) do have completely different cultures compared to the country in wich you live.
      Americans sure are self centered.
May you pardon me for my poor english, uk friends, i' m your italian neighboor.

Why doesn't she go around with an ermine cloak? She ruins the pageantry by dressing like that.
