We are six years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled with animals and joy. We plan to have a variety of miniature critters on our pastures, raise free-range chickens, grow fish in our pond, garden, plant fruit and nut trees, and harvest wild game. Our goal is
to escape the stresses of corporate life and embrace all that country living
has to offer as we enter the next chapter of our lives. Follow along on our

With about 1/2 of Piney Grove in silviculture (planted pine trees), we have an endless supply of brush to control. If you enjoy thick grass and brush mowing, here's a previous video to check out: czcams.com/video/DHTmCIYRmyw/video.html
Just bought a L3902 and a 5 foot brush hog. This video gave me the confidence that I can work my property myself with the right gear. Take your time you wont mow down things too big. Just move slow and safe and have fun!
We've done SO MUCH with this tractor. Over 100 videos here: czcams.com/play/PLG5yS75HLzo3RVqEuA0f6IioXV6FtFhHW.html
Wow, this is an informative video. Thanks for Really helpful information
Glad it was helpful! Here a playlist of our tractor videos: czcams.com/play/PLG5yS75HLzo3RVqEuA0f6IioXV6FtFhHW.html
Great info Brad, I’m always impressed at what a brush hog can get done 👍🏻. Have a great week 🙂🙋🏼♂️👍🏻
Luc, beats the heck out of a chainsaw and pruning shears, right?!! 💪
Did it just like that the other day was worried I was to rough but it went good. Been 43 years but I guess it is like riding a bike. Thank for giving us good and useful information
That brush hog is still kicking! Used it recently in this video! czcams.com/video/oMMntSEruYY/video.html
Brad, that was impressive. You really took care of the Privet. I like that your a Git-er-done kind of man. Thanks for the informative video.
If that brush hog could talk, the stories it would tell! Thanks for watching
Nice seeing the tractor in action
We keep it pretty busy! Thanks for watching. Brad&Deb
This was some pretty good info Brad. I have always used the brush hog in a forward direction because of the rear discharge. When I do use it in reverse, it is because of brush or thistle growing on a ditch bank where I can't get to it any other way. I always leave me loader on and bull doze the brush before I hit it with the mower. That method has served me well in the past.
I have an old I.H. pull behind chopper. My Dad used to mow over brush that was higher than his head standing up on the platform of the 520 John Deere tractor. I don't want anyone around when I mow with that. It will throw some sizable chunks over 100 feet. I don't mow when the cattle are around either. Good way to kill something or somebody.
Thanks for sharing this info Brad. Great job on the demonstration as well. See you for the next one.
Thanks Gary. Our goal with this video was to demonstrate that brush hogs are probably more "durable" than a lot of new tractor owners are willing to try. After 40+ years on a tractor, they still amaze me!! Take care. Brad&Deb
Thank you again for another great learning experience for me being new into all of this. Love the channel, love the videos!
Thanks for watching! Here's our tractor playlist: czcams.com/play/PLG5yS75HLzo3RVqEuA0f6IioXV6FtFhHW.html
Great video showing capability of brush hog in FL flat woods. NWFL local here!
It is so thick down here!
Great lesson!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Great rundown of your setup and pre checks. Good information! My light duty Land Pride don’t want stuff as thick as what yours was eating. I can hit stuff up to about an inch…
That's our oldest and most used (abused) brush hog and it's a BEAST!! Thanks for watching, Lucas!! 👍
I'm new to this so really good tips
Thanks for watching. We have a tractor playlist with some other videos you might like: czcams.com/play/PLG5yS75HLzo3RVqEuA0f6IioXV6FtFhHW.html
I have several acres of heavy briers, brush, and cedars on my land. I have a Yanmar 223 and recently bought a 48" King Kutter. Thank goodness I didn't hire a forestry mulcher cause I am eating right through it. I am amazed at how quickly I can clear an area and reclaim my land. I do find myself leaning over some of the taller, thicker stuff with my front bucket before backing into it. I feel it puts less pressure on the 3 point area.
Brush cutters are more durable than most people are willing to push them!
Nicely done.
Thanks for watching!
That’s what old tractors are good for. They don’t have much on the bottom side for brush to tear up. Newer tractor I ram the brush with front end loader like a bull dozer. Most of it will uproot or snap apart
Nice work
I'm surprised at what that gearbox can handle! Thanks for watching.
You should consider putting up wire mess on your ROPs to catch debris. I've had debris hit my cab like a bullet. Nice video.
That's a good idea. I always wear safety glasses when I brush hog for that reason.
I've got the exact same king kutter bushog, way more holes in it than yours. I bought a gently used name brand "bush hog" to use and I've kept my older king kutter just to use it in the woods to clear the under brush. I'm going to beef that one up soon but its nice to see someone else who is using one that I have in the same manner I intend to.
They can take a lot of abuse.....this one is still going strong!
$6k for a week for my guy to brush hog 8 acres. Still had to go back with my brush hog a bit. 👊🏻
I need to live closer to you, Chad! I'll take some of that work!
Will the brush hog cut brush stumps low enough that you don't worry about flat tires ? Great video
It tends to shred them rather than leave them sharp and pointy. I've never gotten a flat from them, but it could happen. Thanks for watching.
@@PineyGroveHomestead that for your reply, love the idea of beefing up the deck,, dó you have option on model brush hog to get for Kubota bx25d that would handle 1 to 2 Inch red cedar trees and brush,, thanks
@@jimg8218 4' wide is probably the best width for a BX. As far as types of cutter, there are rotary like mine and flail. I don't have a flail mower, but they can handle brush too. Cedar is a pretty tough wood to cut....I can run over a 2" pine and shred it, but a cedar trunk usually stays whole. Brands : King Kutter and Land Pride...Frontier (by John Deere) is good too. Here's me working some cedar with a rotary cutter. czcams.com/video/oDH87Lv75Dc/video.html
Another and probably safer option is push them over with bucket first then back up and mulch it up. It will be a lot less stressful on the equipment. Although I do it both ways , and have a bent up bush hog show for it. Lol
For those tight areas, having the loader off is a game changer. But yes, we've knocked over some big stuff with the loader to get it down where the King Kutter can chew it up. Thanks for watching.
@@PineyGroveHomestead I really haven't done that with a loader off but we'll give it a try. I have 6 acres in the back of my property that I want to clean up and it's hard to navigate in those tight spaces with the loader
@@deerrudy YES, definitely take the loader off and at least try it. I need to find some space in the shop where I can do it all the time because it's not as easy to put back on on un-level ground. 🙃
How sharp do you sharpen your blades? To the point where it slices paper, shaves hair?
I try to maintain the factory edge.
One look at all the hydraulic hoses running under the tractor easily explains why you want to cut heavy brush in reverse.
Protect that underbelly! Thanks for watching. Brad&Deb
I do same type projects with mine tho it needs to be beefed up more and possibly soon
How this things holds together is anyone's guess!
@@PineyGroveHomestead yours is on steroids'
I just drive forward...but I also have a loader
I take the loader off to get in between the trees!
A hydraulic top link could make a difference as well.
Our tractor doesn't have rear remotes, but if it did, a hyd top link would be so awesome for box blading. Thanks for watching! Brad&Deb
Doesn’t your neck hurt from twisting around so much?
yes!
I'm in my 60s, the neck gives out, Looking back is my biggest problem.
Need the automatic transmission
if you mean hydro, it is.
A brush hog is not a land clearing tool. Every time do this type clearing I end up with regrets. Flat tires, wrecked gears, broken u joints , muffler damage, electrical lines damage are just a few things that result.
Agree that it's hard on equipment, but we've not had any issues like that.
