    6:25 i still pick volunteer potato shoots from the beds i had potatoes planted in 2018... Lesson learned, I now have dedicated raised beds for my potatoes and I grow them on a perpetual basis. It is just sooo much more efficient: I dont have to plant them, only harvest when and as much as I need, don't have to store them as they stay in the ground all year round. I'm in Co Cavan by the way, and this winter I'm gonna be honest, I wasn't very confident about my potato growing method as we had hard freezing for a solid 2 weeks, below -10C at nights. But to my biggest surprise they all survived and now all have came up and growing fine. I grow red duke of york, charlotte, purple majesty and sarpo mira. I really recommend everyone to give this method a try, don't have to waste time on planting, don't have to harvest it all at the same time, don't have store it, every early spring I top them up with a bit of compost and some bone meal and that's it. I have also noticed that over the years as they're settling in, they are getting even more resistant to disease and pests, probably as they're adopting to their environment. And no more volunteers all around the garden. Except for those from 2018 I still haven't been able to get rid of... 🤣

This could be a very interesting experiment and particularly since you’re so close to me. Really positive to hear that they made it though the cold before Christmas. Thanks so much for sharing this!! Awesome!

    Hello! I had a slow start this spring, when I should've been planting I just felt overwhelmed with it all! Like what should go where, how much to plant, etc. Its a new garden for us that we have dug from grass and weeds and tons of rocks! So I've finally been planting away, today it was kales and I too have kalettes and purple sprouting broccoli. I'm not sure yet what areas of our garden to plant directly in so I'm starting most in cells right on the dirt of the garden; no greenhouse yet. Lovely channel!

    Niall, you are doing a grest job,whoohoo oinions galore, great to store for winter, ive planted lettuce in between mine, great coverage for the lettuce in the heat. Love your fruit tree beds, they have come on so well. I took the cover off my psb too, easier for me to have a nibble as i pass by. Re beans, someone said to me that we have successes but also for no reason some that donymt work, every season is different. Delighted you will have your paths sorted, will be beautiful to sit amongst, a few solar lights, and beautiful evenings to relax in. Great video Niall as always. Thank you.

    Hi Niall: Actually, i was not in favor of you destroying the grass, but I've changed my mind. One, it looks great, but two, you may well have far few slugs in your veg beds because they won't want to crawl across the gravel as easily as they do the grass. I would love to hear a report from you about your experience with slugs and snails after it's all spread. Take care and stay safe up there. DA

    • @niallgardens

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  Před rokem

      I shell the beans then with a sharp knife put a small nick into each bean, about 1cm long, then bag them and freeze them. That way, when you cook them, it's easy to pop the tasty green inner bean out of the bitter outer shell

    Garden beds really looking good this year. Check the first turnips you showed. You can cook the greens and you want the turnips small. Hi Niall! Lovely to see your garden progress! I was wondering what shoes you're wearing in this video... I have been looking for a lightweight/flexible pair of garden boots (à la duckboots style) for my own forest gardening ventures, and right now I only have a pair of heavy/stiff and clunky rubber boots with lining (they do the job well for some areas I'm working in, but are not practical for all areas of the property). I wasn't sure if the ones you wear are a brand name or what type of shoe they're called! Many Canadian thanks!

    Any company in Ireland selling the hoops and netting? As Gardening Naturally now only deliver within the UK only. I've grown potatoes on top of the ground covered with hay and leaves. No digging at harvest time, only push back the grass and leaves and pick what you need. Plant your Rocket later in the year. The cooler weather will prevent it from bolting or plant it in the shade.
