- Today on Buckle Up, Jasper reviews the freshly updated Hyundai i20. With refreshed styling and updating of the trim levels, does the i20 still pack some big punches in the ever-competitive supermini segment?
How does the facelifted model hold up against its competition in the form of the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208, Kia Rio, Toyota Yaris, Citroen C3, Renault Clio, Nissan Micra, Volkswagen Polo, Mini Hatch, Audi A1, Honda Jazz, Alfa Romeo Mito, Skoda Fabia, Dacia Sandero, Fiat 500, MG 3, Suzuki Swift, Mazda 2 and Seat Ibiza?

This is the first time that I've come across your channel. Straightforward, clear and interesting review. Its a bit like Top Gear back in the 1970's with William Woollard &Co. Thank you.
Wow, thanks! Hopefully you'll stick around for more where that came from? 😊
@@BuckleUpShow certainly will👍
DEAR God why don't they sell in USA? The world complains about large american cars but international car companies want us to buy them for big bucks, we cant get subcompact cars here anymore... the only thing i want is a practical smart little hatchback... none.
It is such a shame that small cars like this just don't exist in the USA! I guess a combination of consumer habits and different road styles just mean that cars like this won't sell in the required numbers 😭
They don't really sell here. I would love a small hatch too. I would get the K4 hatch when/if it comes to the US if Hyundai doesn't bring the Elantra GT back
vw golf…
Is the size class above the i20.
Hyundai Venue is the same size, just taller
also Elantra is much better and costs the same witout EU penalties
Thank You for this review. May I ask you, are You preparing review of facelifted Hyundai i20 N-LINE?
We’ll try and get one when they’re available. Thanks for watching!
Great and clear review! I am ready to buy an i20, it looks great and is very well equipped. Do you still think the i20 is better than the Toyota Yaris and the Suzuki Swift?
It's definitely better than the Suzuki Swift (nicer interior), but it's a very different proposition to the Yaris which is a sturdy hybrid. The i20 is a car you can have more fun in, but won't be as economical.
im buying this car as my first car cant wait and awesome review man
Thanks for watching, and hope it was useful!
Good review😊
Thank you! Subscribe for more where that came from!
Love the colour!
It’s greeeeeeeeennnn

A month ago I test drove the latest i20 in this colour - Lucid Lime Metallic.
Driving around the centre of Bradford it certainly felt I was making a statement.
Decided to go with the mid-spec Premium manual which has just about everything you would want.
But chickened out when it came to the colour.
Decided on the Meta Blue Pearl which is actually terrific - the body creases and different sunlight conditions giving it a constantly changing multi-hue effect.
@@BuckleUpShow Lucid Lime
How do you find the front driver's seat in the standard 120 vs the 120n ?
Seats in the i20N are bucket-stype sports seats, which hug you really well and offer loads of support. The seats in the regular i20 are very comfy and adjustable, but don't offer as much support, for obvious reasons.
@@BuckleUpShow
Actually, you open the front door on the driver's side and in both the i20 and i20N there it is!
Funny
I have an Ioniq and have been impressed with it. The i20 is a good looking small car. Shame they've dropped the hybrid, but it wasn't a full hybrid system, and it's less needed on an A/B sector car, i suppose. Excellent review.
The i20 is brilliant all round! The hybrid was only a mild one, with a small 48V battery and a starter/generator. It had a small positive impact on your urban fuel economy, but like you say - not massive in this segment of car. Thanks for watching, and we hope you enjoyed!
@@BuckleUpShow Hyundai have an impressive array of hybrids and EVs, as you know, so the i20 is about value and simplicity, I guess. I've been impressed with the reliability of mine.
Can you override the sat nav to use Apple Maps through CarPlay instead? I like how the directions come through on Apple Maps
Yes, that's how carplay works in all cars
Well presented video, still think the rear end is fugly as well, though.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc. etc.
I am wondering as I have not catched it during the review, how does new I20 stands compared to new versions of Clio or Fabia or other cars from the category?
Renault won't give us a Clio, so this is much better
Good development work at Hyundai.
The 2024 facelift Hyundai i20 does look very stylish!.👍🏼👌🏼😉😎
Yes it does!
The boot floor space, can hold a spare tyre?
Potentially, but it's not offered - instead, you get a tyre inflation kit.
Yes but only a space saver, which you will need to order as an extra via your Dealer (or aftermarket). I have one fitted in my i20N
Thanks for the reply. Having a spare its much better, IMO.
i love the fact that this dude actually says “hyundai” and not “hunday” or “hayunday”
It's the little things 😅 Hope the video was useful!
So many variants and so little time... My local Dealer claims it's "hyunday". I've given up caring
Have this car since February, all good, some differences in countries, for exampe mine is Hybrid and in Spain you can not have Bose sound + bigger display for media and "window in the roof" and some other features, but the car is pretty good
No sunroof for Spain, that feels like a missed opportunity
@@BuckleUpShow not agree, it’s really hot during the summer. So it’s not big problem :)
Ah, this is probably a cultural difference, but we like to expose ourselves to as much sun as possible (what even is skin cancer anyways?)
Ive just ordered this car in Lucid lime with a black roof and theres no option to have a 120ps engine , please let me know where you got that info from, At the moment i have a 2022 n-line i20 and the mild hybrid is garbage even the hyundai salesman told me that , my car is nothing but trouble with the 12volt battery charging
The lime colour is excellent. It seems that since I filmed the video, Hyundai have tweaked the engine options available and removed the 120 PS engine, as it used to be an option on the configurator. Shame that there seem to have been issues with the 48V MHEV system, as it did make the car quite punchy to drive!
@@BuckleUpShow I dont think there was never an option for a 120ps engine, only the n-line has that and i think that bit more power is helped by the mild hybrid, i must admit my n-line is quite quick when you red line it , sorry know i never got 1600 n , there going to worth a few quid in time to come
I've just had another look at their website, which does (in the write-up of the Performance section www.hyundai.com/uk/en/models/new-i20/features.html) mention 120PS, but the configurator does not show any options other than the 100PS. How bizarre!
@@BuckleUpShow I think what they mean there is there talking about the n-line has the 120ps , the extra power is either the electric motor or the mapping is different
Stunning looking and gorgeous colour. Lost faith in hyundai locally when my daughters i10 went in for clutch problem.dealer changed clutch and said needed bleeding and was a pain. I declined to pay as guy was service manager and showed him the cable clutch. Reported them to hyundai as no doubt they were claiming warranty. Hyundai dis interested.
It's unfortunate that dealers are usually detached from the brand of car they sell and therefore can't be held as accountable as would be ideal.
So the ultimate is same price as I paid for my brand new black i20n last year, madness, cannot compare the two
You can no longer buy the i20N new though, and it's also surprisingly easy to compare them!
Is it better than Mini ? Which one would you honestly pick if money is no issue
Money no issue the mini, there is a reason it is so much more expensive
@@BuckleUpShow what is the reason
It's a premium hatchback
Kommt ein Nline Version?
Ja
I wish they could’ve made an i20N like the GR Yaris, 3 door and a lot closer to their rally car
Unfortunately, they can’t even make the normal flavour now due to fleet emission restrictions.
I've owned my i20N for a month now and I think they hit the "sweet spot". It genuinely is a 'do eveyrthing' car. I wanted the 5-door specifically for easier access to the rear seats. Having had a 3-door beforehand, it was always a pain resetting the Driver's seat after accessing the rear. Making it more like a GR Yaris would also have pushed the price up and compromised the i30N's position as their highest performance model. I appreciate the engineering that has gone into the GR Yaris but it's not required for daily use...
After having this car for just over 6 months now, (pre-facelift version), I do have a couple of niggles…
1) The DCT gearbox can be quite hesitant at times, especially when trying to pull away from a junction quickly. I know it’s a quirk of all DCT’s but there’s been a couple of hair raising moments in this when the car has taken a second or two to decide what gear it wants to be in. I’d much prefer a normal torque converter auto transmission rather than a DCT. But that’s just personal preference.
2) The basic stereo system whilst sounds decent enough upfront, is non existent in the back. I don’t even know why they’ve bothered putting speakers in the rear as hardly any noise comes out of them. Even changing the position of the speakers makes no difference. I only noticed this when I had rear passengers in the back and they asked for the radio to be turned up as they couldn’t hear anything!
3) The Infotainment system, whilst on the whole is brilliant for this class of car, can be quite sluggish at times when pressing the screen. Can sometimes take 2 or 3 seconds to catch up. Even after a recent software update it’s no better. Apple CarPlay works fine though. Just a shame it’s not wireless on the top end models with the bigger screens, yet in the 8” screen it is?! Go figure!
Overall I’m still happy with it. It’s economical, nippy when it gets going and has more than enough space for your day to day needs. Seats are reasonably comfy and it had no issues keeping up with motorway speeds with car full to London and back to the North East. Would I recommend it? Yes I would… but it will be interesting to see how the new MG3 compares to this when that comes out, especially with the hybrid engine that the MG will have for much cheaper than the i20 is.
Interesting insight from a longer-term owner!
With the DCT quirk, is it possibly the case that it takes off a little quicker if you stomp your foot down? It is frustrating that DCTs are still not quite as good at reading the road ahead as a human instinctively would be!
We've found the Bose Stereo system to be pretty decent, though that is only standard fitment on the Ultimate specification, so Advance and Premium may well be lacking in punch?
Internal car Infotainment is a difficult thing to get right - to the point where some manufacturers should probably not bother with further investment as people tend to just plug their phones in if they have the option to do so. Unfortunately, the reality is that in-car systems will never feel quite as smooth or natural to use as a mobile phone does. Some tech-heavy manufacturers, like BYD and Tesla are close, though.
We are also interested to see what the MG3 will be like when the new model comes out, as it should be a bit of a unicorn in this segment!
A very comprehensive review. Lots of good info. 👍
If I could offer a suggestion, I'd say try and make your delivery a bit more relaxed and flowing - as it can come across a bit stilted and 'preachy'. As others have mentioned, it's reminiscent of 70's Top Gear - which I think we've happily 'moved on' from.
You drove that poor car down some shockingly bad condition farm/country roads. I'll bet it was filthy afterwards... 😁
If we don't preach how will we ever convince anybody to join our cult (CZcams membership)? 😅
Influenced by SEAT Ibiza?
We don’t think so, and anyway we reckon this looks better!
Let's hope the engine is better. as the one in the Kia xceed 1ltr is rubbish loads problems with it.
The engine may or may not be the same, as there are two families of engines with some overlapping in dates used across both models. In the i20, though, there is less weight to move so the engine will be less stressed than in the larger Xceed
why do you not review the entry level? Nobody is reviewing the entry level for some reason
Because this is the press car that Hyundai supplied us with. Why not go and sit in one at your local dealer? The rest of the review will still be relevant.
A real pity that there won’t be an N version.
A shame, but a necessary change to the model line up to hit ever-tightening fleet emissions/EV targets 😭
@@BuckleUpShow still a shame though. My partner has a black i20N and it is by far the most engaging car that I have driven, which includes 2 Golf GTIs and a present RS3.
@@davidhayes4814keep calm, something tells me that the regulations get pulled back when 70+% of the ppl cant afford a small car
So glad I've just bagged a red i20N. Love it!
We're a smidge jealous - we loved it when we all drove it! czcams.com/video/XKGbHs13CW4/video.htmlsi=1T7QuQRe9GmTowek
Car looks great on the outside but looks boring inside. Wish they could’ve made more of an effort in the interior.
The interior is not the funkiest in this class, but it's certainly not the most dull hathback inside.
The mild hybrid system was plagued with faulty mechanics and software errors. Good riddance
It was very punchy to drive though.
@@BuckleUpShow that might be true but it's not much use if the car spends more time out of commission due to faulty mechanics and software errors...
Occupants not occupiers - that would suggest they were unwelcome squatters rather than passengers.
You must be fun at dinner parties, occupier just means someone using or utilising a space but it doesn't define if that person is there rightfully or not
The iconic i20 which is being destroyed interms of design year after year.
Really? The previous generation of the car wasn't exactly a looker...
@@BuckleUpShow i20 was know for its beautiful designs.. if we take 2009 i20 , ,2012 facelift i20 ,2015 elite i20 ,2018 elite i20,, all of these were loved by large numbers of audience for their beautiful fluidic design language..but after 2020 things havnt been same after they introduced Senseous sportiness.. these designs are polarising, have love or hate kinda things and especially i20’ rear profile looks like drawn by a 10 year old child. Iam not one who is saying this you’ll hardly find any positive comment for their new “ seanseious sportiness design language “
We would not describe any of the previous generations of i20 as beautiful.
The spray on pants are back then?

Which of this cars direct rivals would you have instead? Good luck finding one with your criteria.
Btw, you need a handbrake for handbrake turns!
@@BuckleUpShow I'll give you one good example, Honda City Hatchback RS boom!
You can’t be serious 🤣
Apart from the fact it’s not sold in Europe, it has a CVT gearbox!
1.0 litre and 3 cylinders - no thanks
Why not?
The fact they have discontinued the i20n shows that this company has no interest in their customers. I'm putting my money elsewhere
They do have interest in their customers. Unfortunately though, to continue existing as a company they have to hit certain emissions and fleet BEV targets, necessitating the axing of some of the more polluting models. It is a crying shame, but an important step as we move towards greener transportation. The fact that Hyundai have developed the Ioniq 5 N also would heavily suggest they do have an interest in their customers 😊
@@BuckleUpShow It's exactly the same emissions everybody else has to live up to. They are only doing this to make more money and they don't care about customers. What greener transportation? Hopefully you are not suggesting EV's are greener now that every serious study shows the opposite. That Ioniq 5 SUV is just one big ugly joke. It's a big heavy kids toy pretending to be a real car 🤡
Please list ‘everybody else’ selling a hot hatchback in this size class of car. We’ll give you a clue, if you include the stipulation of a manual gearbox, the list halves and the price doubles.
The rest of your comment isn’t even worth responding to and shows your complete lack of understanding, and knowledge about the industry, or indeed, cars in general.
@@BuckleUpShow My comment is about this brand specifically. Not a list of who else is abandoning their costumers. You wrote you didn't want to comment about the rest but then proceeded commenting about it anyway. Volvo has made a thorough study which shows how much pollution is generated from developing Lithium batteries for cars. This study shows you have to drive about 80.000 miles before it is break even compared to a petrol powered car. Just because you move emission of co2 from one place to another doesn't make it go way. Then you should consider how batteries are disposed of in countries like China and India and what that is doing to the climate. Then you have to take into consideration that only half of the electricity used for charging EV's comes from green energy world wide. You can also take into consideration that carbon dioxide generated from private cars world wide is about 6.5 % a year compared to industry which is about 70 %
We’ve read the same reports as you. As you admit, the report shows that over the lifetime of a vehicle, it has lower emissions. That is unless you expect to scrap your car at 80,000 miles?
Auto manufacturing plants are much greener than they used to be. It’s a journey that takes time. We’ve only been making proper EVs since 2010 and look at how far they’ve come. I don’t suppose the petrol cars of 1900 were particularly great, but they’ve enjoyed 125 years of refinement since then. We live in the North East of England where all our electricity is very green.
You can choose to find problems if that’s your prerogative. It sounds like you’ve never driven an EV for an extended amount of time and you’ve got all your ideas from the Daily Mail.
The screen looks cheap.
As very important motoring journalists, we can confidently say this is one of the better in-car infotainment systems in this class of car.
Ooh snot green.
It is!
It'snot green 🤣
I think it’s got a super ugly interior. There’s too much going on.
Which bits is it that you don't like?
@@BuckleUpShow the weird bumpy fake air vents, the sticking out climate controls, and the same size displays at two different heights. It’s a very competent car though.
I guess we have seen better integrations of multiple screens, but the interior is all very functional, which is something you can't necessarily say about some of its rivals 🤣
@@BuckleUpShow bring back the F56 MINI 😅
Exactly what i thought when i saw the interior, it will look old in no time and will age very badly.
