I discovered Dave about a year ago. I got on board right away with gazelle intensity. Today, for the first time since at least 2012, I'm debt-free and beginning Baby Step 3 with great enthusiasm. Praise the Lord Jesus and thanks to Dave and his team for your teaching and motivation.

We are done with Baby Step 3! We are on Baby Step 3B now... have a little bit of cold feet about homeowning, but we are still plowing away at this step.

Once you get finished with Baby Step 3, how you view life changes.
Btw, Rachel, I loved your advice (video) on paying off the mortgage once extra every three months! Everyone should watch that.

What are some of the best options for where the money should be kept? We have ours in a savings account at our bank that earns minimal interest.

Is there a video like this for Baby Step 6?

I think there needs to be more information/discussion about what specifically “operating expenses” means. I agree....Food on the table and electricity, but what about debt payments or contributions that are made. During a job loss or a huge emergency should one stop making retirement contributions or paying for internet etc? A little more specificity and examples would be helpful. I realize at baby step 3 you shouldn’t have any more debt, but I know some people who achieved baby step number three first and then focused on paying off some of their debt because it was interest free and they wanted to have the security of an emergency fund first since they were not really losing anything as far as interest payments on their debt

last year I kept track of every single bill I paid over the entire year... even bills paid only once or twice a year. I averaged all those bills over 12 months like I was paying every bill every month (for once a year bills I divided them by 12 months, twice a year bills I divided by six months and so on). I also kept track of every thing I spent in gas and groceries and averaged them to get a monthly expense. I found my monthly expenses for gas groceries and bills to be $3000 a month. That is my monthly operating expense.

also I'm combining baby step 3 and 2. I only owe on my car and my house and I pay extra on the principal for both, but the company I work for hasn't been doing well financially so my goal this year is to keep 3 months of expenses in my savings in case I lose my job, but I plan on paying the car off when the amount I owe on my car is low enough and my savings is high enough that I can pay off the car while still keeping at least my 3 months expenses in the bank. then I'm going to divide my monthly car payment up between my mortgage payments and my 401k contributions and work on saving up 6 months expenses.
