    Hey Tristan 👋 I just purchased you ebook on SUV RVing from Amazon. I’m eagerly consuming the information with details I would have never thought of! I highly recommend this book to your viewers. I’m converting my Jeep 🚙 Compass into a weekend camper. Cheers! 🤗

    Excellent video, great how you stay organized in your small space. One thing that worked well for me was to cut a piece of a 3/8" thick foam sleeping pad the size of the inside of my cooler and lay it on top of my food. It added at least another 24 hours to the life of my ice. I'm thinking of gluing it to the underside of the lid, and maybe glue pieces to all the sides of the cooler on the outside. Happy travels.

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 6 lety +2

      Huh, interesting. I've used sleeping pad foam to insulate crappy coolers in the past, but I never though of adding some to the cooler I currently have (and like). I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

    I really liked this video. For those of us who are planning on doing more car camping it really helps us and gives us ideas to be better organized. I have alway’s struggled with the ice chest and just how to put the ice. Or get a better cooler. Great idea you just gave me with that plastic thing with legs. Now I won’t drown all my food when the ice melts. The shower looks interesting. Loved this last campsite. Great views. I hope you climbed that mountain way out there. I think it was calling you’re name. Ha! Ha!

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 6 lety +3

      I'll be doing a video on the plastic tray thing with legs at some point. It works really well. It eats into how much food you can fit in your cooler, but that doesn't matter too much to me. And I actually had already climbed that mountain on a previous trip ☺️

    In April, my 28 year old son just bought a 3 acre ranch in Maricopa about 20 minutes across the rr tracks to the south. We shop at that Bashas and Walmart all the time. I actually live in Phoenix, but go help him on his ranch a couple times a month. I know exactly where that hill with the flag is.

    I love the Sonoran Desert... and even more around Organ Pipe NP, Ajo Mountain. (Bull Pasture Trail is awesome) the vegetation is so much more dense there... and the wildflowers in late May are awesome. I enjoyed climbing Picacho Peak way back in the 80's... I can't wait to get back there now, even though I won't be signing the book this time. But also, this time I will not be gouging my gas tank from a rock in the parking lot! I now have a vehicle with much better and needed ground clearance!

    Cooler tips - a layer of Reflectix ON TOP of your food makes a big difference. Lift only the side where the desired item lives; grab it. The warmer air then is limited to only one side of your stash of food. If the sun shines directly on your cooler, a white shag rug on top reflects a huge amount of sunlight. If there is car heat coming up where the cooler is on the floor, yet another layer of Reflectix UNDER the cooler helps a bit.
    Powder-coated racks to keep food out of the ice melt worked well, coupled with secure containers for all foods.
    We did Four Corners in late August and early September in an unairconditioned VW Westfalia quite successfully using these methods. The red Chinle dust was the biggest problem.
    Clean up was second only to the pollen burst near Stanley, Idaho, one year. Not having ever experienced such a thing, we were wondering if there was some sort of aerial warfare going on!

    So many think of the desert as being “dead”. It is VERY MUCH alive, even in dry times. Throw a little water in the mix and it EXPLODES with color almost instantly. A variety of greens that is hard to imagine, even harder to forget. First time I saw Death Valley was just days after a “thousand year” flood there. The display of flowers was breathtaking.
    Shame on you for not filming the drive from N AZ to S AZ! SUCH a beautiful trip, even if only on the interstates! 😎😄
    Have you ever run into invasive species boat inspection issues with the kayak?

    Welcome to AZ! That cactus in your shoe is a 'jumping cholla' and are by far the nastiest plant in the desert. The spines have barbs that will actually dig deeper into you the more you move around - been known to rip out bits of flesh if removed improperly! Your comb tip is one of the best methods.

    You’re in my neck of the woods!! The desert has a beauty unique unto itself. Maybe next time you come through some of the bigger cities, you could schedule a subscriber meet up. I would love to take a look at some of your gear. Also, perhaps sometime you could put together a little booklet of some of your better free campsites along with directions and a few pics. I would definitely be interested in buying those! I know you can find the info online, but for those of us who are just getting started at this it would be valuable information that would come a little easier!! Just a suggestion.... The target-shooting trash is so annoying. Always find more the closer you are to a town. I've made it a habit to bring an extra plastic bag with me on each excursion for the sole purpose of picking up other people's trash. It's impossible for one person to completely clean up a given spot, but I figure if at least some of us pick up after the selfish jerks who can't be bothered to clean up after themselves, at least that keeps it down somewhat and hopefully prevents closures...some areas of BLM lands near my city have been gated off for this very reason. 8^( Anyway, great episode as always, thanks for continuing to churn them out for us!

      That's a good idea to take an extra trash bag with you. I do what I can, but I couldn't have even put a dent into this place. Really terrible stuff. But yeah, that cacti are super cool :) I never get tired of seeing them.

    Many thanks for sharing the details on your setup. Have been incorporating some of your ideas/tips/tricks to improve my 2007 Rav4 setup for weekend desert camping and weekend urban stealth camping to SoCal. Algodones and Tuscon are on my list when temps cool so greatly appreciate the most recent insights that you're already sharing. If your travels take you in or around LV or if you run into an emergency and need help or a place to rest and recharge around LV, please reach out. Stay Awesome!

    I really enjoyed this video, especially when you were naming the different plants that you were showing. I have two questions, do you have a book that tells you the different plant life for the area you were going into and if you were stuck by one of the cactus needles in your foot, what do you carry for a first aid kit?

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 6 lety

      I knew most of those plants just from being familiar with the area. Not from a book. But I do have and use a book called National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Southwestern States. As far as first aid, basically just tweezers, antibiotic ointment, and bandages.

    Greetings Tristan from the pacific Northwest😊, I really liked the Cactus, and different varieties you mentioned are there in The Sonoran Desert. Did you see any wildlife while there ? At a distance of mile or better I am put to sleep from trains rolling down the tracks , or hearing their train horns, comforting to me. 😊. I enjoyed you showing you're tips, & tricks in camping. You and I have great coolers Tristan, ( identical one's). Thanks for you're interesting video A+ I say ! Also! I agree with you! If people pack stuff in!, they need to pack their garbage back out, makes me wonder if they live at home in that fashion?

    I live just north of there in Mesa, AZ. I've camped in that area many times. Not a good place to camp if you have dogs. That Cholla is EVERYWHERE. Your mutts will come back with a bunch of presents for ya. Otherwise, that area is so beautiful.

    Lots of info on your vid. I don't think I've seen cinnamon chocolate pudding here in Canada...maybe I'll make my own :b
    Clever using the bottle cap for the shower head. Cheap, effective and easily modified/changed.
    About your j-rack kayak carrier...I think I have the identical model. I have mine mounted so that the lower part of the "j" is facing the leading side of the suv so that I don't have a high liftover when placing kayak on top. Is there a specific reason why u mounted it the way u did? Not judging just always willing to learn a better way of doing things.
    Stunning landscape. I've always been drawn to Arizona so I need to visit sometime soon but in the meantime, I've gotta go eat my generic brand pop tarts. Thanks for the vid

      I've actually made cinnamon chocolate pudding before. It's good! Give it a shot. Yes, my kayak brackets are on backwards because otherwise the kayak would cast too much of a shadow over my solar panel. The way I have it also means that I can open the cargo box up more.
