Reply to this comment with your ideas for the next hat critique topic - I'm thinking hats at Princess Diana's Wedding? 👒👰Thank you so much for watching! The response to this video has been amazing ❤
I thought Penny Mordaunt looked like an Air Hostess in that outfit, but nevermind.
Oh yes, the hats at Princess Diana's wedding would be fabulous. What about the hats at the Garden Party (Coronation) is there any footage of that I wonder ?
@@medwayhospitalprotest Im Penny, fly me 😂
Oh yes, that would be great
Ooopppps a banana fell off the shelf and fell on to your hat
Penny researched the traditional garb for her position. The colour, style, military braid and fabric were thoughtfully selected. And she was a star!
A superstar! Well deserved too.
Penny looked amazing! Classy and elegant!
There was something almost medieval about her outfit. I thought she looked fabulous although I'd have preferred the dress was floor length.
Penny was dressed superbly
Just wait…….the muppets will call for her to be Prime Minister next.
So lovely to hear someone speaking properly and clearly.
So totally agree
How do people normally sound to you?
I do an all. I love it when people speak proper
@@Jacubamustoff like incomprehensible idiots who don’t enunciate, don’t pronounce words correctly, and talk too fast
@jakki M Like what like do you like mean? Like why is so like confusing? Like you know what I mean? Like totally! Like OMG, this is like soooo stupid! Like, this chick, is just like talking about like hats! Like, they are ammaaaaaaaiiiiiziiiiiing.
Penny Mordant WOWZZZA
The whole ensemble
stole the show!!!
Absolutely Fabulous Dahhhling !!
Seriously!!! Penny took the Internet by storm. Everyone in America was wondering who the beautiful woman in teal with the sword was.
Absolutely Beautiful and Strong! When I heard She a Veteran Certainly understood how that Training came in to play mentally and physically.
The outfit looked like the style of the tudors, it worked,
it really did.
I agree she was amazing looking. Perfect blend of history and militarism.
Fabulous woman - loved the outfit and her military training shone through. So proud - she is a stunner.
Oh my goodness, I could have watched these hat critiques for an hour. Please do more. Loved loved it.
Same! More please
N'abuse pas du non de Dieu
I agree, I loved this.
@@marierobert8882 Elle n'a pas utilisé le nom de Dieu dans son commentaire.
Loved it! Just wish we in the US wore hats.
Hands down, Penny Mordaunt was outstanding in every single detail of everything she wore, She looked absolutely stunning!
Her hat reminds me of the Anne Bolyn look! stunning!
As a retired milliner myself, I was leery of watching a hat review video from a woman with a banana on her head... but, it only goes to show you can’t judge a woman by her hat (at least, not all the time😜)! What a fabulous review! I have never heard or seen any other milliner talk about the style lines of hats matching the lines of the wearer’s garments, or the appropriateness of proportions and materials of hats to outfit, and color choice! BRAVO! Excellent video!
I did like the shape of Princess Beatrice’s hat/headband, too bad if it was “heavy”, but...just as I loved Princess Catherine’s floral headpiece (was my absolute favorite), I thought they both resembled tiaras! Penny’s was also a favorite. Liking, subscribing and looking up your website!💋💋 PS. Please do more hat reviews! So brilliant!
Hello! I totally understand you - the banana may have been a bit much 🤣❤️
I was thinking the same thing about the banana on the hat! LOL - I was blown away by the knowledge and detail of the video. I had no idea so much went into purchasing a hat or headpiece. Well done Ilona! I enjoyed the video and you did an excellent job. Now don't I feel foolish 😳thinking this was not going to be a video the I could learn from? 👏👏👏👏
The banana was bold. I initially questioned whether you had taken leave of your senses.
Never judge someone who is wearing a banana on their head .

Penny's outfit was MAGNIFICENT!!!!!
7:15 I love the Queen of Lesotho's entire outfit! Thanks for highlighting it. The accessories balance the gown quite well.
The sword bearer was absolutely stunning!
Although there were a few great hats on display, Penny stole the show for me. The colour was to die for. Everything just accentuated her beauty!
Decades ago we traveled to London for a wedding. I have fond memories of shopping for a proper hat to wear at Harrods for the occasion. I love your hat critique - you kept it light with concise, intelligent remarks. Encore, please.
Oh thankyou for agreeing on the colour of Penny's dress, it was Teal! so many males said it was 'blue', was beginning to think I was colour blind. Love the banana!!
Males have higher incidences of colorblindness.
I'm female and not color blind, and I called it blue, too. I also thought CP Mary's dress was purple. Some of us just have larger (or different) groupings to our colors. But also, the screen you use, and the angle, shadow, and lighting of the photograph, all impact your perception of color.
I followed the coronation and it was clearly teal. Later I saw a photo of her from the coronation and I was so surprised that her dress looked deep blue. Lighting and settings on a camera can play such tricks. I suspect the guys who claimed it was blue didn't actually watch the coronation, they're going off some photo from a news story.
@@odileelido8407 I did watch it, and it looked like a medium blue to me, maybe with just a hint of green. I call that blue rather than teal, which for me has more green in it. But perhaps I'm misremembering. It was a striking ensemble either way. Perfect for her role - it had presence, but not so much as to take away from the king and queen.
@@jonesnori Another possibility is that people might be watching on different types of screens. Laptop screens generally have a slightly bluer hue than a TV screen or mobile sceen. It's some technical reason that has to do with the display technology used (LCD vs AMOLED etc).
This was awesome! As an Anglophile in the USA,and a lover of hats, I love to see the UK ladies in their hats. This was so informative and well presented. PLEASE DO MORE!!
Me too! I really wish people here would re-embrace hats. It’s so hard to even find a store here that carries anything even remotely stylish. When I visited my dear friends in London, we just crossed the street.
I'm in the US as well. The extravagant hats at events in the UK have always interested and kind of confused me. But hearing Ilona explain these dos and don'ts makes them make much more sense. I don't know if I would ever be comfortable wearing hats like the ones in this video. But the ones that worked looked great on the people wearing them!
I’m in the US and in a women’s vintage group ages 20s through 60s. We all wear hats, mostly vintage or vintage reproduction. Same for clothing. I’d say about half of us wear vintage full time, the others only for events. But always a hat! Even if just a simple beret 😊
Really enjoyed this review. I grew up wearing a hat and gloves to church every Sunday and also whenever we went to "town". I was always told that the most important consideration for a hat which is to be worn at a seated indoor event (like church) was that it did not block the view of people sitting behind - so small hats only inside. However "town", garden parties, race meetings etc - large hats were fine. So I thought the ladies who wore smaller hats or headwear at the Coronation showed good manners and consideration of others.
Absolutely! (Which is why we knew that Princess Anne didn't come to play!)
@@skontheroadPrincess Anne's hat had a very important function at this event.😉 🪶
@@NothIng-bd9ci Even her hat is a bad a**!
I so agree. As a courtesy to those seated behind me, I would never wear a big hat to an event like this. They are fine for outdoor events where everyone is moving around, but who wants to be stuck in a seat for two hours trying to see around a big hat? A small hat or headpiece is much more appropriate for an event like this. I’m probably from the same generation as you, when I was a child, our mothers did wear, mostly white, gloves to go out, and hats. But, my Mom adamantly refused to ever wear a hat.
Lady Helen Taylor, bun with white and black outfit and hat. My favorite.
Wasn't she fabulous! A low bun is one of my personal favourite go to hairstyles. 👒😊
I see I'm not alone in thinking Penny Mordaunt looked stunning. My immediate impression was, wow....a Wagnerian valkyrie.
By far the most iconic look of the coronation ceremony, imo. ⚔🛡
Interesting! As a German, I had rather thought it represented Britannia ruling the waves.;)
I really loved Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, always a very elegant dresser. Thank you for the information re a soft veil on the hat to soften small eye lines, I will be keeping a note of that tip. Loved the teal outfit too.❤
Right, she and Penny Mordaunt were the best dressed women at this coronation ( the royal women with their were in their own category)
This video was so fun! 😊. I LOVED your suggestion of changing the orange hat to blue, with matching accessories. That would have been a show-stopping outfit!
Agree -and such a simple thing to do… if only she’d given it more thought
@@EH23831 It's Liz Truss - I don't think any type of thought is a possibility!
@@decodolly1535 😂😂 isn’t she the one who lasted only a couple weeks as PM? (Asking from Aus)
@@EH23831 That's the dozy bint! One of the tabloid newspapers put a blonde wig on a lettuce and livestreamed "Who will last longer? Liz or the lettuce?" The lettuce won.
@@decodolly1535 lol
This was really interesting. We used to wear hats when I was young in the 50s, mostly to church where I lived in the country.
I think anyone willl agree that the teal and gold ensemble worn by the sword bearer was beyond stunning. Im still going to make one of those headbands. My fave is still the vintage brown felt hat with the brown bow at the back in your background, I can't not look at it constantly. LOL. On the opposite end, there is nothing about a watermelon colour i can like. Liz Truss entire ensemble proved me right - it was all kinds of wrong. I was surprised at how unvaried the hats were. And with Princess Charlene I agree, her head piece did not balance her bust and the pleats of her dress made her shoulders look more top heavy with no counterbalance on her head, but still quite elegant. It was nice to see more headbands than traditional hhats thho. very nice change.
I felt that Princess Charlene 's outfit was so totally off .....she didn't look well 😢
@@donnabittner69 Shes not well, she hasnt been for a long time. Theyve not exactly said, but Prince Albert has stated publically, what its not. Going by what he said, it appears to to be profound ongoing emotional, mental and physical exhaustion. Invisible illness and fatigue hits anyone and everyone. and I applaud her ability to even go. Ive been following her situation as closely as possible, she is inspiring for me, as I relate so so much.
Great, really informative & helpful for those of us who have great difficulty in choosing a hat. I miss the days of old when men & women wore hats. I'm in my 70's & recall in the 1950's my father mother uncle & aunts e.t.c. all stepping out in hats. Those were the days.❤
As children we would never enter into church on Sunday without a hat.
They were indeed.
ARIES here! Baby Boomer ! I love wearing hats! Aries dies rule the head so I guess that makes sense! 🤔🥰🤗🇩🇪🇨🇭🇺🇲💙
Lol! DOES!
You can you know, wear hats.
Just remove them indoors as your generation taught us.
Lady Ann’s hat worked overtime. It had several roles. 😂
Do you mean Princess Anne?
Very cheeky, Believe123, my coffee nearly choked me! And......agreed!
@@amyw6808 Sorry. Yes Princess Ann.
Watching the Coronation, my sister says Penny Mordaunt's hat will be repeated at the Melbourne Cup in November this year, it was spectacular.
What a charming and informative video!
I love the way the British have preserved the custom of wearing hats, at least for special occasions. It seems that in the US you never see them except in old movies.
Maybe that's why Dr. Jill wore a bow.
Or at the Kentucky Derby!
And in the Black church.
@@cynn3367 I wondered about that. You would think an advisor would have counseled her about the custom of mature women wearing hats on more formal occasions.
@@vbrown6445a lot of those have gotten away from hats unless it’s certain denominations and First Ladies
Oh my! Please give us more hat critiques along with everything we love! X
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your "banana hat"! Penny Mordaunt's teal ensemble (& especially that glorious matching halo style hat) gives me life! I always love the hats Princess Beatrice chooses - even her quirkier selections.
if anyone can be considered a "seasoned hat wearer" I am sure Princess Beatrice of York is on the list
Princess Beatrice is famous for her hats especially because of the "unusual" hat she wore to Prince William and Catherine's wedding. I loved that she auctioned the hat for charity. I was the lead bidder at one stage ($10k) but was soon outbid 😢
I love Princess Beatrice's quirkier hats. I just wish she would receive some training in proper facial expressions. She doesn't seem to know how to contain her odd features.
Penny Mordaunt's outfit is my favourite of the whole coronation. It was the perfect choice for her role in the coronation.
I was agog. Her outfit and comportment worked together to make for a stunning woman.
Yes! Very Masonic!
Totally agree. I love the Halo headband!
So much technical detail in styling a hat perfectly. I really enjoyed this insight. ❤
Crown Princess Marie of Denmark was gorgeous. Well put together style and flawless makeup! I love blues, but everyone looked so chic! Your descriptions are so professional Ilona!
Dos and don'ts surely prompt a search for something more. Honestly, some humans will always color outside the lines. Some create absolute magic ❤
I actually heard one person critical of Penny Mordant. I think she wore the most beautiful dress and hat. I thought the color was perfect for her role in the service. She looked good from her comfortable, stylish shoes to her hat. I'm an American and I didn't know who she was until later.
Who was that?? I'll fight them!!
The only problem with Penny Mordant was her wearing heels on the 13th century Cosmati pavement (mosaic).
For a middle aged man with little daily interest in matters millinery, this was surprisingly engaging - and I don't think it's a bad thing to understand many obscure and esoteric areas since one just never knows when the knowledge of something apparently minor might well save the day: people do notice when things are absolutely right and conversely, tend to let mistakes or errors of judgement become the takeaway......
By the way, I feel hat advice when it pertains to military uniforms is surely superfluous? I expect there are very specific regulation headgear, appropriate to the Service, rank, formality etc - the magnificently Nelsonian bicorn is of course the requisite item as Anne was wearing her ceremonial uniform as Colonel of the Blues and Royals in her capacity as Gold Stick which is nowadays entirely honorary but, as I believe she herself said, one of the reasons she was delighted to accept the role when offered it was because it avoided needing to give what to wear at the Coronation even a moment's thought!!🙂
"Well, there's my dress sorted!"
I really enjoyed the fact how kind you were about the not so spot on fashions. 🇺🇸😉
Just loved Zara’s outfit and hat ❤️
She DID have the coolest hat.
Wow. Fabulous review. Too many lovely hats and outfits to pick but if I had to, Pippa Middleton looked positively fantastic.
I loved your commentary on the hats, feel a bit cheated that nobody gave such a good commentary as yourself on what people are wearing on the day This moved my understanding of hats and outfits by the bit. Well done, and I hope to see you talk again about our hats.❤❤
Love your passion for hats, which makes you such a trustworthy commentator! I never wore a hat myself, but just love you comments and your subjects as well. Please comment Lady Louise's hat, which I personally found beautiful on her. Please also kindly comment the Princess of Wales and Charlotte's head pieces and other ones (such as Kate Perry's) that we missed to spot during the wonderful coronation ceremony. Congratulations on your great videos! 😍
Fantastic! Such good guidelines for pairing your hat to your ensemble.
Thank you! I hope you can find them useful 😊👗
Princess Anne's hat and cape stole the show for me. I know that bicorns aren't exactly typical formal wear, but my goodness what I wouldn't give to sweep into a cathedral looking like a cross between Horatio Lord Nelson and Miranda Priestly 😍
Yes, wasn't it fun seeing her sweep out the side door with her cape all aflow? I was quite disappointed when off it came for her to ride behind the King's carriage.
Yes, more hat selections, do's and dont's.
Hi, Thank you for your critiquing the hats of the coronation. I would gladly have spent more time with you on the topic, with you so clearly showing the details that I have missed. I also enjoyed your Carmen Miranda moment with your fruit embellished percher. I'm looking forward to the content of your next broadcast. Yours, Ann
Hi Ann, thank you so much! I always enjoy reading your comments 👒😊
I really appreciate the basics on good hat selection. Very helpful!
My favorite hat was the one worn by Queen Letizia of Spain. Gorgeous all around (no pun intended) 😊
La unica pareja, matrimonio guapos de toda la coronacio❤
Pippa never fails to disappoint on occasions like these, she like her sister & mother wear's a hat beautifully.
Zara as always looks perfect in the colour & the style of her outfit & hat.
Samantha Cameron looked lovely, both the outfit & hat added some warmth to the drab grey day.
Penny Mordant was spot on, hat, outfit, shoes everything was pure class & completely appropriate for the role she was given to preform
The one that accompagnied Pippa was her brother James, not her husband
Your hat in this video brought a smile to me face after a very trying day. Thank you.
Yes, I loved the British Parliamentarian outfit.
I love your commentary and critique in wearing hats. I've learn something, for I love to wear hats.
Zara is always on point!
Only the great Lady C has discussed matching the “weight” of your hat to your garments. Delightful video and with your perfect diction and lack of distracting background music, I can safely share it with a hard of hearing person who will also enjoy it.
Hello, Thank you so much for your lovely comment ❤️ I have just added some subtitles, so that the hard of hearing person you want to share this with also has the option to see the words on screen 😊
One thing sorry! If you flip a photo PLEASE say so. Penny Mordaunt's gold fern embroidery was actually on the right.
This video was informative and direct without being mean to the wearers. Also, the viewer is reminded of the study and detail of fashion and design. The hat follows the lines of the dress/garment, ingenious. Thanks, I learnt so much.
Well done young lady, very enjoyable AND informative.
My favorite outfit was Zara's Loved her hat! Would love to see her husbands outfit. They are usually matching
I love a touch of humor in a hat, like a banana.
I thought the banana piece indicated boldness with a touch of humor, and irreverence. I liked it!
Queen Mohato nailed it. I love that little piece
Loved this! Who knew. Wish hats and gloves would become stylish for the masses again. I grew up with them but by the time I was old enough poof nobody was being stylish anymore. 😞
Your video is charming and interesting to watch and my first time viewing you. There were so many other hats at the coronation I hope you will do a sequel to include them with your remarks. Queen Leticia of Spain and Lady Louise Windsor wore creations that really caught my eye.
Brilliant - what fun this was to watch. Thank you for this delightful post.❤❤🇨🇦
What a pleasant surprise, well done young lady!

❤️LOVED this video!💕 I agreed with all of your assessments. I'm sure I will watch this over and over again, as I cannot decide which look was my favorite. Keep the videos coming and happy hat wearing. Looking forward to your next live stream. Cheers!☺️
Doesn't Zara always look absolutely & dependably perfect? Not too much, not too little, noticeable but understated... which shows so much confidence and elegance in her character.
There were so many beautiful ones here. I am so glad to find your channel! I will be watching often.
That was a beautiful hats lesson...i love when royals are in their hats tiaras and gowns.they look exquisite
I'm so happy your video was on my recommendation list. I never knew how interesting hats could be. Thanks to you, I now have a basic idea of how hats should work with the rest of one's outfit.
The Queen of Spain!!! That was a beautiful hat.
This was fascinating👒 Thank You for sharing your expertise with us!!!
I loved this video. Please produce more content especially about major royal events.
Loved your comments and advice. So glad I found your channel!
Pippa looked perfect! 👍 I create my own unique hats, these rules are so useful! I loved Zara's, maybe a bit high, but she's tall! Some of the pale pinks were completely washed out, and looked awful! (Charlene looked much bigger her hat was too small!) Black hats are unflattering and harsh, except at funerals! Red and Orange are ok at parties! Definitely mens ties to match! Crown Princess Mary is extraordinary (tired eyes)! The Middletons were all elegant! Katy Perry's, too big! 👍
Thank you so very much for the education. Penny was absolutely stunning. Being an American I did not know who she was. I found her to be excellent in her actions. She stole the whole show. ❤❤❤
Wonderful video. I love hats and come from a family of women who always wore hats. I had an aunt who was a milliner and we all had hats made by her.
What a wonderful review. The articulate descriptions, information about design, style and detail were so helpful and educational. I would love to see a part 2 video of more guests and their hats at the coronation. Thank you.
Fascinating! TU for sharing this info and your knowledge.
So refreshing to listen to someone who actually is very knowledgeable about their subject!
Excellent critique of the hats, very informative and useful when choosing a hat or headpiece.
This was so interesting, and i think your feedback on the hats good and not so good was done in a really positive way.

Absolutely love Pippa Middleton's entire outfit, such an attractive color.
Princess Anne's look was by far my favorite; the sweep of her cloak swinging open as she walked down the aisle was one of my favorite moments of the whole shebang.
Excellent video. Did not expect THAT much useful info in a short time. Thank you
Excellent! And thank you for sharing observations from a trained and gifted eye. All the best to you!

Beautiful analysis. I enjoyed it so much.
Love this video! Too many good hats to choose from, although I’m partial to Princess Anne’s bicorne and the teal one with gold leaves.
I think the teal with gold leaves is turning out to be the favorite in the UK!
Also I love the 🍌! Reminds me of hats by Bes-Ben but with a contemporary flair!
