  • EV-olution Quickies Episode 003 shows you how the AliExpress Niro gas hood struts have held up after 8 months of use, including a winter. They are good, but not perfect, and I corrected the issues in less than 30 minutes. Watch this video to find out the good and the bad about the Xiang-Chang hood struts I bought on AliExpress in December 2020.
    Please feel free to share this video in EV forums and Facebook groups!

    Thanks for the original video and this one. Thanks to your instructions I fitted them effortlessly today. I had prepped the parts beforehand by giving them a layer of rust protection paint, greased the joints and placed tape on the strategic areas of the hood. The clips are now of a different design: you don't need to take them off, just pull on them a bit before, then push them back in after fitting. In English for the benefit of all mais suis Francais :-) A bientot!

      Thank you very much. The nice thing is that it forces me to really examine what I have bought and use. I had really not noticed what was causing the issue for the struts until I made this video. It's a good thing as I was able to correct it before the winter where even more corrosion would have happened. Thanks again.

      I bet you are going to like it. I got it recently and had an amazing first long distance (3400kms) road trip across Hwy-1. City range has been very consistent close to 470 and highway driving could end up yielding 400kms with AC on during summer time.

      @@nikhilvibhu Well I finally got it and you’re right I absolutely love it. I got the 2020 Niro EV Platnum edition. I get about 4.5 Kw per mile on the highway. After a month and a half of ownership I really enjoy it. We’re taking a road trip in September and I’m looking forward to the experience.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety +3

      I strongly suggest putting a thin rubber strip under the hood, at the 2 contact points, which will prevent it from happening in the future. I did it and it is perfect now.

      @@EV-olution Good that you have made the video. The spots on the washers were also rusted at my car. I now have dismantled them, painted and reinstalled.
      What I do not have is that at the contact points on the dampers themselves abrasion is evident, so for the time being I do not yet need the rubber strips. But keeping it in mind.

    I just bought a 2020 Niro EV today and can't stop binge watching your videos! The one thing I really wish it had though was a power liftgate. I love it on the Subaru when carrying ski gear to the car and thought of being without one is quite disappointing. Is that an aftermarket modification you have thought about or considered?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for watching my videos 😎. There is an aftermarket power lift gate kit on AliExpress. You can learn more about it on the Facebook group called ”What did you do to your Kia Niro EV today?” I was also disappointed that the Niro did not have it, but I never had it before so decided to live with it as it was.

    Thanks so much for sharing all the informative videos. As usual, the bloopers at the end always put up a huge smile on the face of viewers.
    Quick question unrelated to this video regarding EV brakes. I noticed in one of the recent videos where you had your tires changed at 43K. Wondering if you can share some updates on the brakes, if you had them changed recently or how many kms usually they can go before wearing out for a replacement? I am more keen from regeneration point of view, as I have set them to level-3, so with that I have to use the brake paddle rarely while on road. Does using regenerative braking help in preserving/extending the life of brake pads or they need to be changed just like for any ICE car depending on the usage? Thanks!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety +1

      It is my pleasure and thanks for watching. I am glad my videos are helpful and entertaining 😎.
      The Hyundai/Kia EVs use a hybrid braking system that uses regen even when you use the brake pedal. The friction brakes are only used when needed, like in a panic stop situation, or to hold the car in Auto Hold, etc. For this reason brakes in these cars are not used very much, like with most EVs, and require an annual brake service to make sure things remain lubricates and rust free. Both of our EVs still have the original brakes, which are pretty much like new (some wear), and require nothing other than the annual servicing. A real brake service takes between 1.5 and 2 hours and costs about 200$ CDN (180$ + tax at my local garage). With that being done you should have no issues with your brakes for years, and require no replacement for a long time.

      @@EV-olution thanks so much for your detailed response. I really appreciate you taking time to respond to follower’s questions/comments. 👍
      I didn’t know that the braking system in an EV is totally different from ICE vehicle.
      Another question related to the service schedule Kia follows. When I bought the EV, dealer put a sticker on the windshield regarding the EV service and set it as 8000kms or 1 year whichever hits first. I am into 2nd month of ownership and have already hit 5500kms, so I am curious about the service schedules. Do I need to get back to dealer after my EV hits 8K kms? If I choose to skip this marker and say plan to get the service done after 1 year, would that generally affects the warranty Kia provides on various vehicle components? Thanks!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety

      You should show the owner's manual of the Niro EV to your dealer because there are no service items, or liquids to change at all, for the life of the car. All maintenance points listed are inspection points; in other words they look at the car to see if anything is wrong, or if a fluid is low. The only replacement item is the cabin filter and you can do that yourself by following the details in the video I made about it. It takes 5 minutes and costs 20$. I have had my Niro EV for 2 years and 4 months, I brought it to the dealer once at the 1 year mark for the general visual inspection and the annual brake maintenance, which cost me about 200$. Then at the 24 month mark I had a brake service done at my local garage ClickTire that you saw in the video I made about the new tires I bought. Sorry for the delay in response, CZcams Studio on PC does not show comments in threads that I have already replied to. I saw this because of your message on Instagram.

    Have you unscrewed to unscrew the rubber dots a little to lift the bonnet away from the arms. Maybe just 1 / 4-1 / 2 rotation. At least I can do that on my Kona. It gets a little hard to close, but not something that does anything. The rubber-dot I think of, is that just beside the marks on the bonnet / hood

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety

      I could, but my hood is properly aligned with the nose of the car and I don't want to change the alignment and have the hood sticking up. Also to note, the Niro EV has a rubber seal trim between the nose and the hood that keeps things under the hood clean and helps with aerodynamics and raising the hood would open a gap. The solution I mention in the video works perfectly.

  • @patduggan5825

    I have installed the hood struts but I find it puts upwards pressure on hood as it popped up after going over sharp edge on the road where they were starting to pave. The hood seems to be slightly higher then side fenders.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 2 lety

      Either you have the incorrect struts, or they are installed incorrectly. Did you use the struts from the original video about this subject? I had no issues with mine, they were a perfect fit, and there were no issues at all. Original Video: czcams.com/video/i_oL_JgIUsU/video.html

    Dans la vidéo, à votre droite prêt de l'encrage hood struts , que signifie l'étiquette jaune qu'il dise de couper. Pourquoi et c'est quoi au juste?. Merci . excellents vidéos comme toujours.

      Merci beaucoup, j'apprécie.
      Le fil avec l'étiquette est le coupe courant pour les pompiers, en cas d'accident. En coupant le fil ça coupe le haut voltage.
      Pour des pneus d'hiver je suggère fortement les Nokian R3. Voici la vidéo que j'ai fait sur le sujet; la partie sur les pneus est à environ 8 minutes: czcams.com/video/fepat58rgIQ/video.html
      Pour les roues j'ai utilisé les roues d'origines pour l'hiver et des mags EV01+ l'été. Voici une des 2 vidéos que j'ai fait sur le sujet: czcams.com/video/faGZSImDxAU/video.html

    How are you now FULLY closing the bonnet, do you have to press down on the bonnet? Before the struts were fitted the bonnet would fully close by dropping it from about 6" away from the catch

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 2 lety +2

      I just replied to your other post with this question... I have always brought the bonnet down gently, then pressed to click it shut, like I do in my videos. The difference with the struts is that there is a bit more resistance when pressing, but nothing terrible. I have also tried the "slam" test; I can "drop" the bonnet and it will close even with the struts installed, it just takes more effort, hence the reason I use the gentle press instead.

    I'm not 100% sure about safety in a frontal crash. In that position wouldn't the hood struts be pushed inside the passenger compartment in a heavy crash?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 2 lety +1

      The hood struts are flimsy things in the overall scheme of the car. They would crush, or disconnect from the mounting points and are nowhere near being strong enough to penetrate into the car. That plus the fact that they are angled outwards, towards the sides, so even if they were strong enough to stay straight on impact they would deflect outwards.

      They are a great benefit and just simple to install. As you could see it will be easy to renew thrm if there should be some rost. So why not installing them???

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety

      They are very useful and I would not remove them. I have fixed the issue and they are perfect now. You should consider installing them because they really make it more convenient if you open the hood more frequently like I do.
      The rubber strips that I applied to the 2 locations under the hood fix the issue I show in the video.

      @@EV-olution Do you have no rost at the hood? There were screws exchanged.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 3 lety +1

      @@thomassommer7643 the hood strut bracket that was included with the kit, and that attaches to the hood, uses the original Kia hood bolts so they are still fine. The hood strut brackets are still in pretty good condition, but do show a little rust at the edges. If I were starting the installation from new I would give the brackets a coat of paint for added protection before installing them. I will probably remove the brackets next year to clean and paint them since they are still very nice.
