ROSSINI The Barber of Seville overture | Nicolas BALDEYROU and friends

  • Dear Friends, I hope you’re well ! Today’s video was composed by a composer like no other, who can instantly bring so much joy and hope, the one and only Gioachino Rossini !
Composed in 1816 and premiered in Rome, The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini established several records:it was composed in only two weeks, by a 24-year old who had already written 16 operas! The music flows forth with breathtaking limpidity. Serenades, duets and ensembles brighten the comedy with vocal flourishes and verbal antics. And yet, the genius of Rossini resides in mastering the physical crescendo, designed to increase tension until the audience is boiling with impatience and ready to explode. The overture immediately offers a surprise: a tutti warns the audience that the show has started and then a delightful melody takes over, is repeated and swells to the breaking point...Laughter and rhythms burst forth and overflow. All the insolence of Beaumarchais’s play is captured in the madcap universe created by Rossini.
In this arrangement, I used all my set of period of the early XIXth century, 2 clarinets in A, 2 clarinets in C, one basset clarinet and one basset horn and of course a beautiful natural horn 🔥 I would like to thank all my super nice and talented friends bringing their period instruments at home to complete the piece: Alexis Kossenko, Gabriel Pidoux, David Douçot d’Ortega, Yann Dubost, Javier Rossetto and Antoine Ganaye 🙏🏼😍✨
I hope you'll like it and don't hesitate to give me ideas 😁
Take care and stay safe! ❤️

    Dude. How....
Last video when you told me this was going to be the next one, I'm always excited for whatever your next arrangement will be, but honestly I was kind of like "Oh ok, Barber of Seville, cool.", thinking I've heard it so many times and there was not too much more to get out of it.
You totally and utterly shut me down and showed me the fool that I am, and thank you for it. This was SO GOOD! What the hell?!?! It was like hearing it for the first time! Once again your audio quality and mixing is spot on, the arrangement is phenomenal (I really liked how the bass part became WAY more interesting and intense), like... I can keep going on. And will!
I am rhetorically asking why do you all play on freaking period instruments. The sound from them is so good. Is it for authenticity sake? Are you all just so goddamn good on modern instruments that you just want the challenge of making it sound good on old-ass equipment? Are you all a period ensemble? Are you all just wacky and think music in 2021 is played on these relics and don't know they evolved into a modern form? This rhetorical question kind of became several actual questions, pardon me, but please feel free to not answer any of them; I enjoy the instruments greatly.
Your natural horn chops are disgusting, please stop. And for clarification sake, by that I mean keep doing that and incorporate it more. But you know there's also like, a modern horn that is probably WAY easier to play, right?
I'm never going to suggest another piece to you ever again. Let the master work and do your thing, I can't express how much I enjoy everything you do. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your comment and happy you enjoyed the video ! I mostly play period instruments for authenticity, getting the original sound of the wind section composers were looking for, also because in my opinion, their sound is mixing better than modern and the balance is much easier and natural, especially for the brass instruments. And it’s also a refreshing challenge for practicing 😁 and last but not least, nobody did that kind of arrangements on period instruments to my knowledge, so I’m happy to explore a new path 🙏🏼😊✨

    Dear Nicolas,
I discovered you a couple of weeks ago, looking for a recording of the Gade pieces. Actually it was quite frustrating until I found yours.
Meanwhile I'm just more then deeply impressed by your easyness and your musicality, including the recordings with your class.
If I'd be young I would try very hard to be accepted in your class. I'm a decend clarinetplayer and solo-clarinettist in a middle sized german opera orchestra, but what you are doing with all kind of clarinets (and I don't want to mention the Horn, especially in the Barber) is just incredible and I would not have thought possible. You are finally somebody who can hold on with Louis Cahuzac.
What you do is, what I call clarinetplaying. I bow deeply before you. Please go on.

Hi Nicolas, excellent as usual! (an euphemism...)
One of the location is the 'Teatro Farnese' in the Palazzo Pilotta in Parma? ....astonishing Teatro, that I visited years ago, and which could inspire you to an arrangement of Monteverdi or music of the Seventeenth Century...(at any rate you could play any baroque instruments...😁😁) see you soon!

Absolutely Giuseppe, this is the treatro Farnese ! I went there last summer and I loved the place. I love Monteverdi but I should find the adequate instruments then 😓😁

    Lovely.
    Outstanding.
The bass viol looked different -- more cello-like.
Nice to see the baroque instruments.

@@nicolasbaldeyrou1 I'll look at the video again and again to discover other details - and to enjoy Rossini music and the beautiful way you play it. Merci.

The quality is even better than so many Orchestras I have heard! Bravo, Maestro! Do you think you will one day do the full Rossini Introduction, Theme, and Variations? I think you did the last variation on the channel and it was so exquisite, and this video reminded me of that. Also, how is the period clarinet to play? Is the embouchre different?

    • @nicolasbaldeyrou1
      @nicolasbaldeyrou1  Před 3 lety

Thank you ! Doing the whole Rossini would be a very good idea indeed ! Normally the embouchure was completely different, double lip and mouthpiece inverted with the reed up. But I’m not ready for such a big change 😅😁

@@nicolasbaldeyrou1 wow, reed facing up? I can't imagine how to play that 😂.
