Rams head hook - Blacksmithing for beginners

- As the holiday season fast approaches I thought we would look at forging a rams head. In this case the forged rams head will become a wall hook, but they are also good for poker handles, letter openers and a variety of other projects that make good holiday gift ideas.

I do thank you for your videos,,I'm a VM disable combat vet, and it took me about 6 years to build my small but wounderful blacksmith shop down at my small Rancho in tejas,,your videos has been a blessing on my tinkering...65 yrs ago I hung out with a old REAL Smith and when he past I've never found a real smithy so thank you for showing us..bless you

Great video as alway! Two of those, with felt lining or even leather, would make an awesome hook for a flintlock in a rustic home or cabin! So many great ideas packed into one little item. Thanks for sharing!

Really nice approach to this project ,I liked the idea of drawing the horns out to shap as one ,then splitting and shaping I've seen others where they draw each horn out separate .thanks for showing us can't wait yo have a go .from Ant in Wales UK .👍

I watch Daryl Nelson the other day and wow his animal heads look real. Also made a bunch of tool for figure carving hoping to do a few different heads this week so this video was perfect timing like always. Had some round w1 left over from other projects I hope they hold up. Also made an angle block for the vise to hold the work piece. I’ll let everyone know how they turn out when there finished. nice nice work.I did a few from a railroad spike head and split where it over hanged at then drawn out the steel and was so much work.But surprised on how much steel can be drawn from such a tiny piece of area.This is far simple and ill go this route on my next projects to come.

I really enjoy your figure heads! You make everything seem so easy. You are really skilled and a great inspiration. It would be really cool if you could make a video on making a eagle head.

Hey John have you ever thought about a ramshorn head flint striker? I'd buy one of those off you in a hearts beat.
You could twist the horns together and make a unicorn. Lol

Its amazing what a difference a few feet makes
John, you could have split the hook, and ended up with a double coat hook. Could have then twisted those hooks to mimic the rams horns. Those are my thoughts. Great looking hook.

Thank you so much for the amazing tutorial and video! But I have a question why did you only punch one hole and not two?
Mostly because I only punched one hole. If the mounting bolt is tight the hook will be stable, but there wouldn't be any problem with two holes
When you rolled the bar back on itself after forming the horns, did you fire weld the 2 pieces together or did you just leave the groove running down each side?
It is just folded back on itself with no welding
Can you make a rams head with round stock?
How much preparation time is involved in making one of your videos? Everything always seem to be just in the right place when you need it.
There really isn't a lot of preparation ahead of time. I do try to stage tools while stock is heating so i have what need. But mostly My tools are close at hand anyway. Having the time to go through each project ahead of time would be great, but It can be tough enough to just find the time for a video.
Where did you purchase the Round Nose Pliers? I ordered a pair from Peihl Tools, however; they are smaller than I wanted. I'd like a good heavy pair like you used on the rams horns. I'd appreciate an assist on locating them. Thank you.
