Hey kids! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller, and on today's video we are going to break down a topic you all have been asking about for years: How to write a GREAT guitar solo!!!
In this lesson, i'm going to take you all with me as i go through the process of writing a guest solo for Eric Hill's song "Silos". In the process, we will talk about the importance of LISTENING, building themes and motifs, call and response phrases, the importance of chord tones, how to choose the right scales to use over tricky chords, phrasing tips, my studio gear setup, and so much more! Its gonna give you everything you see for a creative jumpstart on your own solos for sure.
I'm playing my PRS SE Hollowbody here into the Axe FX 3, and i'm wearing my favorite pineapple shirt.
Thanks so much for watching! Let me know what you want to learn next in the comments section! - Hudba
It just makes me laugh that you’re soloing over exotic tones while wearing an exotic shirt and talking about bringing sand to the beach 😂
Alternate title: How to write solos like a hunk.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Callen Tyler Instablaster =)
@Leonidas Dominic thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Leonidas Dominic It worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Callen Tyler you are welcome =)
Neat. Got my technique good enough to play confidently. Now I need to figure out what the heck I even should play.
When it comes to guitar
You're the only one we can always trust uncle Ben!
Thank you soooooo much
And when in doubt: pinch harmonics+whammy bar!
Imagine being a student of Uncle Ben
In a remote way, I am.
Liquid Swords!!
I was in middle school. Shit changed my life.
- think less about in key and more about in chord
- you wanna develop ideas based on something you've already played (consistency)
- question and answer, take the same lick and end it on two different ways
The SECOND this quarantine is over.... me and you are jello wrastlin’
“Less about in key think more about in chord...”. Great advice 👍
I noticed a shift in improving solos when I focused on all the chords used in a given song and if they change ket kinda weird.
It got easier to track.
Groovy vibes. I love it.
14:00 That little riff reminds me of the end music of 5th Element movie.
That A (6th) harmonizes as the 6th, yet also sneakily kind of resets the tonality to A, making the C chord sound like extensions of A.
Nice Ghost figure in the background! I love them
That song/solo relaxes me.
Very cool lesson!!
Thanks!
Great lesson as always 👍🏽🔥🎸
This lesson is dope, cheers!
This is great Ben, thanks!
Your solos are always great
Great solo Ben! Thanks for sharing your thought process and workflow - super helpful!
Wonderful insight Ben. Thanks for letting us into your process.
absolutely beautiful, really liked the way you laid out the thought process, more of these please!
thanx this was a great lesson!!
perfect just what i need
Ben Eller is one dapper feller!
One of your best lessons
Awesome Uncle Ben!! Love how you give us the deep insight into your thinking and how you’re analyzing and workshopping the solo!! More of this type of video would be amazing!!
This was the best lesson you ever made Ben thanks so much I vibe with this
Outstanding lesson + phenomenal shirt. This is quality content, Uncle Ben.
12:52 "very Vai". It's funny that I was thinking exactly that right from the beginning. Those big interval jumps sliding up and down on one string have a lot to do with it. Lots of folks will start on a specific note and slide up or down to no specific note. But Vai often goes the other way. Especially when he starts at a higher position with no specific note being articulated, and rapidly slides down the the note you hear.
Stellar lesson uncle Ben! Who knew theory could be so much fun and inspiring? Always target those chord tones!
This honestly couldn’t be more timely for me right now, as this is where my focus has been.
Thank you so much for the excellent video Ben.
Thanks for sharing your insight on your thought process.
Very informative !
😎🎸👍
This is very helpful!
Love the PRS Ben!! Great solo!
To hear Uncle Ben break that down for me so my mind can somehow wrap around soloing...thanks Unc
Sick solo and sick backing track
Uncle Ben thank you!!! This really helped!

Awesome video uncle Ben.😉👍
i love your videos Ben you are my favorite online teacher!
great sense of humor & you know what you are talking about!
i have learnt so much from you..thank you!
Nice breakdown on how to construct a lead. You have an excellent way of simply stating complex things. Thanks.
To shred or not to shred...well we know the answer to that in this case. Perfect lesson on "less is more". Well done sir. 👏🏻
Sick! Thanks for sharing your process. This is HUGE for a mere mortal, like myself.
Uncle Ben, this is one of your best videos ever! I'm going to get a lot out of a few repeats of this one. Thanks!
Moo
Juicy tone, Ben!
The shirt plus the sound ... Flashbacks to 90s movies
I'm digging that casual friday shirt man lol keep up the good work!
Always good information... hell yea nonk ben
I been playing lead guitar since August 6 of this year, I'm not a fast player yet so I write my solos similar the one u are playing with more melody that people will remember, Thanks for all your teachings
I loved this one. Thanks, Ben! That PRS SE makes me more than a bit jealous. 🎸✨
Great Job Uncle Ben! Two thumbs up! 👍👍
I finally decided to sit down and learn some music theory, and my god it is making everything seem a lot easier when you explain it, great video dude, helped a lot
This gave some great insight into my sucky soloing, thanks Uncle Ben!!!
ahhhh, goosebumps!
I just learned more in five minutes than I have in the past 50yrs as a working musician. Thank you.
I can sooo hear the wonderful Satriani influence in your soloing...THAT is meant as a compliment!
Hairfarm thank you!!!
so effing cool. super valuable.
Coolest instructor ever.....dig it!
uncle ben looking snazzy in that hawaiin shirt
Sick bro!!!
Love me some Uncle Ben, dude! Great vid here! And I'm digging the pineapples :)
Thanks for showing how to work some call & response phrasing to build dramatic tension and then resolving it with a splashy but not jarring finish. Just what I was looking for!
That shirt it off the chain and man do I dig it. 🤘🏻
that was nice! tasty solo
8:09: "Let's see what we can come up with"....Nah, you don't want my "help" on this Uncle Ben.
Like the solo build. Had an Eric Johnson feel to me.
Thanks Uncle Ben. It would be cool if you can do a video like this, but for a metal/shreddy solo!
Very satriani like super cool thanks uncle Ben!
well I learnt more in 20 mins then I have the last 2 years watching how to solo videos thx Uncle Ben
My first reaction to seeing that shirt is to look at your ear. You never disappoint.
Duuuuuudddddddddddeeeeeeeeeeeee.... (like in Shoogagoogagunga)... best lesson ever! That saying a LOT. Really. Great. Channel. But this lesson is chock full of goodness. Humor, guitar chops... but most important, HOW TO WRITE GREAT SOLOS, step-by-step. I have my own approach. But I learned a great deal in this lesson. Please do more lessons like this. I am up'ing my Patreon support b/c of this lesson. Correction - I just updated it (I am related to you in some weirder way than before). Well done! BOOM! Off to watch again... lots to learn. Thank you. Stay safe!
I realized we have almost an identical approach to solo writing. Only difference being my guitar skill haha. Good stuff.
This gives me some giggles. It took WAY too long...like seriously, it took 20 years, but I can finally write solos that sound as good as what you played without even thinking about it. It makes playing so much fun.
Just little insane chunks chasing the flavor of the tune with some killer phrasing and 100 ways to deliver each note. If only I could have done it like that 16 years ago.
I don't think there is a shortcut here other than thousands upon thousands of hours of trial and error.
Damn Ben, you finally look like step-dad.
very nice prs
Nice as always - another idea I have from watching is also record video of jamming over it and build on ideas that get the head nod of approval after a phrase 8 > ) - It has kind of a Steven Wilsony chord progression vibe
looking like steven seagal
Josh hahaha so true
But can he run as fast?
So true, think chord always. Unless your live and improvising
Great video man!,I'd really love to see a tutorial vid of Brent Hind's live solo from aqua dementia🤘
So, secretly your last name is Rice. Descendant of uncle ben's rice founder.
No applause needed, but thank you. 😊
You are a great teacher. Your content is appreciated.
I love that shirt.
Your dad is gonna be so proud when he listens this solo!
Love the proud boys shirt.
Hi hi on en a pleins dans le jardin.... Par contre ce que je n'ai pas, c'est ton talent ! Thx Ben
thanks man really helpfull
Music go's great with the shirt!... Very evening beach tiki bar with a new girl on a date. 😂
I learn something new from you every time you post to your channel. Thank you!👍🏼
Aloha Ben. Enough said!
Nice Weird Al shirt Ben.. Good lesson.
Really, really, really enjoy your vids #UncleBen! I'm signing up on #Patreon TODAY! Funny enough, I find my solo tendencies to be melodic and didn't fully comprehend I was chord chasing. Thanks yet again for opening my eyes! #somuchtolearn
I dig this vid. I am getting to the point in my search to be a stand alone lead player that I find myself doing just this. Unfortunately I didn't spend enough time in the past learning wth it was I was playing just relied on my ear-holes and hand-fingers to make a good sound. Thankfully this song is done over Chords and in the major scale. You didn't go all modes, and how to use them, on us.
Thanks Ben for a timely lesson at step dad speed on solo writing. I'm currently working on this aspect of my playing where a lot of times it seems overwhelming with all the "modes" to choose from, but your lesson just reaffirms that one must always break things down into bite sized chunks.
BTW I love pineapples (I have a similar shirt) and I eat them a lot because they are yummy, but also because they contain bromelain which is a great anti-inflammatory enzyme terrific for joint problems and arthritis. Got to keep those aging finger joints healthy and limber for more jamming and Uncle Ben lessons. Stay safe!
I wish CZcams was around in the 1980's I'd be a GOLDEN GOD on guitar, thanks to uncle Ben!
These videos keep me young I swear!
$100 says you're not wearing pants in this. Either way, another great lesson Unc!
Surf's up!
Unfortunately I can only give this one thumb up, it definitely deserves two.
Reminds me of the doo some lf these frases
quite the Satriani vibe. Nice!
Awesome as always, thanks for sharing, have you seen a guy called Cinematar ?
YUSSSSS
"JUST CUZ ITS IN KEY ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH, IT HAS TO BE IN CHORD AS WELL" ...my takeaway from this entire lesson! tx ben
