This is such an underrated film, thanks for covering it
Being an airplane buff, this is one of my all time favorites. It flared my imagination as a kid and I played many games based on it in my childhood. I guarantee you are NOT going to get the theme song out of you head!
When I twisted my ankle several years ago I passed the time by watching this film over and over again. It's so quick that despite being the same length as a modern blockbuster you feel like you could watch it two or three times over the course of one of those, then boom, there's your afternoon gone and your ankle that much closer to being better. I still cite it as my favorite film when asked. I even got to see Ponticelli's plane in the Southward Car Museum the following year, so that was fun.
Absolutely brilliant movie. Gert Frobe and the Prussian training manual and Sarah Miles and her skirts.

One of the best movies ever. No sex, no profanity, and no violence. Think we saw it at the Hollywood theater in East Orange, NJ

In my top 5 films of all time. A classic where everyone is lampooned! It also has my favourite quote in any film....Lord Rawnsley in summing up the race: 'The trouble with these international affairs is they attract foreigners ' 😅
The part with Terry-Thomas on the top of the train was filmed on the line that ran past (and quite near to) our house when I was a kid. Now you need to watch the sequel “Monte Carlo Or Bust!” which is at least as good or better. And Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because why not. The 6 jets are ‘Lightning’ quick-reaction Cold War fighters made by English Electric. It’s worth looking into them, not for your excellent reviews but just general interest. They could vertical climb like just nothing else.
9:53 - lets be honest, if you know film from across the globe, EVERYONE did stereotypes of others (using actors from their own countries).
In MMITFM, you see 'loving' steriotypes. And everyone (including all the British characters) are stereotypes too :)
A great comedy movie.
What is genius about this film by any comedy standards is how it justifies its messages. Aside the acknowledged casting of genuine foreigners in international roles, it deviates from perceived stereotypes without it ever being profoundly stated, despite the general cliché of stereotypes in humour. Each national representative has an arc, and we get sufficient segmented time devoted to them without detracting from the main narrative. The lady-of-the-piece shows she can cope with chaos; the American is an all-out respectful guy, and the young British lead is only really bothered by the American hitting on his potential partner with no idea of the latter's sincerity. The undoing of the villain is also a nice contrast from the norm; he simply falls an incidental victim like the others and we don't see him again.

One of the things I like about the outlandish stereotypes is that everyone is equally outlandishly stereotyped; the Italian is overly dramatic, the Frenchman is a complete womanizer (and the different roles Irina Demick played each time we see her), the Germans are overly militaristic -- goose-stepping while pushing their plane out of the hanger, despite the fact that Germans didn't goose-step until the early 1930's -- the Young Englishman is very proper and pleased with the way his life goes, and Lord Rawnsley is everything the pompous British Empire has ever said or done to try to maintain an air of dignity. Terry-Thomas' character is so easy to hate, and makes "Those Daring Young Men in their Jaunty Jalopies" feel like a natural sequel. It's such a fun movie!
From what I recall, them playing into their stereotypes was actually a deliberate part of the comedy. It's the same reason that they desynched Yamamoto's mouth to his words, like an old-school Godzilla film. And its obvious, at least imo, that the actors are all having a good time playing those stereotypes to the utter hilt.
I grew up watching this film in the evenings at fly-ins. Everyone loved it. It also contains one of my favorite movie mistakes. If you look in the distance while Terry Thomas is running on top of the train, you will see the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant. Once you see it, you'll never miss seeing it again.
