so damn good, the ending with the ost made it so fucking epic.
Fun fact: The OST here was made before the anime. The director was so moved by it they made every effort to create a scene worthy of the music.
You could say Betelgeuse woke Subaru up from his depression/broken mindset.
Because if a person is already mind broken, and he gets traumatized even further and further, yet cannot even die (to escape all the trauma and his broken self), then literally what other option do they have than to heal, or rather fix their self up.
As in, the quote *"If you're rock bottom there's only one way to go and that's up"* , normally this quote is false because even if you're rock bottom you could break the floor and take your own life.
But in Subaru's case there, it's actually 100% true because he can't even take his own life permanently meaning there really is only one way to go from there.

That being said, subaru's face at the end doesn't really depict what one would call "Healthy determination", but more like "Determination of Madness".
I have to disagree. Subaru's mind wasnt broken. In shock, maybe. But betelguese had truth to his words. Subaru was hiding behind the facade of a broken mind, albeit probably subconsciously. And when Betelguese dragged him out, that's when he became broken. "The outside of madness." At the end of the episode, that isn't simply determination. It's madness.

I love the early confusion in regards to the plot.
The best way to conceptualize it is to think of it like one of those 1000+ piece puzzles. The first arcs(season 1) is basically just about pouring all those pieces out on the floor for you to gander at, and then everything after is about piecing it slowly together.

This episode was wild like hot damn. The writer may love to keep his cards, but damn does he still make episodes like this that just hits.
Best episode of this show(in my opinion). At least from the arirval of Betelgeuse. He's crazy, but somehow funny. And that drama with Rem. And the music. And the credits scene. It's just the best episode

It's the one Subaru meets his parents for a last time in that Echidna's dream world recreated from Subaru memories.

Tbh, i can't really laugh at betelguese. They portray his madness really well. Especially how he spends the entire time mocking Subaru and the situation he's in. Brutalizing and murdering while also making points of validity and mocking it all simply because Subaru is an insult to his character. Subaru, who hides away behind madness, who stagnates and lets hell befall him. "You are truly slothful." Betelguese, who is mad personified, acting with haste to fulfill his goals. Im not horrified. But he's definitely a character to be taken seriously.
Is "Betelgeuse" really that hard to remember? I could get it if it was a long af japanese name but that is pretty western.
yes, this! this is the LEGENDARY episode. praise the director for nailing the delivery of such an astounding experience. and that music piece "REQUIEM OF SILENCE" that start to play with Rem final words; its sooo beautiful yet its sooo hurt to listen to to this day 6 years later since it first aired. and Betelgeuse voice actor; he just deliver role no one would expect its the same voice of kirigaya kazuto
As a side-note, I'm always surprised at people being confused by(and no I don't think this should constitute a spoiler) Puck rising out of the mansion. I mean, it's clearly Puck's voice.
Maybe it's just my "musical ear" being way too sensitive, but I've seen so many reactors confused by it, and I just don't see it given how often Puck's had dialogue throughout the show. He's also the only cat-like thing that talks in the entire show not counting Felix =P
Not a critique mind you, since again, literally almost every reactor I've seen failed to catch this too. It's just hard to relate to because this was obvious to me the first time I watched the show back in the day.

I find this too, everyone is confused, when I watched i admit it was a bit confusing but I realised it was puck after heaing it again and the thing he said, then a few episodes past or one episode and it's clear it's puck.
I noticed the same thing, every reactor I've seen failed to notice it was puck. Maybe we really just have sensitive ears 😅😂

I guess I kinda get if people don't speak or understand Japanese. Maybe those people would have noticed if they were watching the dub instead 🤔 But, I have no way of knowing. It could indeed just be a matter of "ear sensitivity".

The world in Re:ZERO is four countries surrounded by a giant waterfall on all sides known as the Great Waterfall, iirc.
To the north is the Holy Kingdom of Gusteko.
To the east is the Kingdom of Lugunica.
To the west are the City-States of Kararagi. Anastasia comes from here.
And to the south is the Empire of Vollachia. It was cut from the anime, but Al is from here.
Subaru can rival guts in ptsd
In the first run of this savepoint, It's kinda hopeless for Subaru because it all fall at him all at once. He f*cked up in the royal courtroom; a dude he despises beat the crap out of him; he had a fight with Emilia and he have no way of telling her the truth because every time he does something grabs his heart and instills fear on him(I really feel that I'ts kinda frustrating); then he feels abandoned by Rem. When he thinks he had a trump card that would turn the table for him anytime, he had to see that sh*t and tells himself this is not what he wanted, that it's not his fault that things kinda go this way. So, yeah, I see why he loses his mind.
But in the second run, he sees a figure of his attention, Betelgeuse. After all of what he witnessed, all Betelgeuse had done to Rem, the one who tried to rescue him, and even in her last breath, she mustered up all her magic just to free him in his shackles. Unlike in the dog's arc, he only knew who he must confront at the last part. But now, he knew who he must defeat.

io! To shed some lights about Subaru's mindset at the beginning vs the end. You expressed your confusion about why was he so "determined" after experiencing something even more fucked up, and the show try to showcase the switch in his mindset using the change in who it is to blame for all of that. At the beginning, Subaru was blaming himself for wanting something bad to happen so that he could solve it and show himself as a hero, and prove to Emilia that she needed him. But he ended up getting such messed up situation that he regretted it and even blame himself for that. After this loop, Subaru has found someone who he can now blame, Betelgeuse, in particular for what he did to Rem, hence causing such a switch in his behavior, from there is such determined behavior coming from.

Yup. Hearing someone call this episode an "experience" instead...few descriptions of an anime episode have been more appropriate.
I remember watching this the fkrst time. I don't kmow what I felt during the episode, but I suspect it was at least close to horror. I do know that, once thise credits started running, as ____ stood there, covering the world in cold, I stood up myself, amd stared disbelieving that I had seen what just happened. Also, those mega top-tier credits had a quality that made me, for a moment, truly feel as if that was the end of the series. Not with my reason, but with my heart; it felt as if I, and Subaru, were hurt too much to make it back from that.

Basically, Emilia is kind of Elsa or Anna of movie Frozen, when she dies Pack got pissed off and tried to freeze everything, and also killed Subaru.

This episode makes me wonder why he gives a shit about Emilia anymore.
He really has no excuse to be so slavishly stuck on her. Rem literally died for him more than once..
Emilia hasn't done jack shit. She saved him from a beating one time reluctantly and by accident in a timeline that no longer exists. Big whoop.
And so far she has shown no interest in him whatsoever. Not to mention the massive class differences that would keep them apart anyway.
Hell if saving his life is all it took, then Reinhart deserves him more than Emilia. lol Hell so does Beatrice, Felix, and even ROM.
Emilia is an unhealthy fixation without any justification or reciprocation.
When Subaru first arrived in this world, he became attached to Emilia because he realised this world's people mostly, even if they can be nice, aren't going to help a nobody looking suspicious like him for nothing in return, and he has nothing so Emilia stopping to help when she was risking losing the thief, protecting and healing him was far from the norm.
His experience with Rem killing /torturing him put him in a similar position to Emilia's discrimination in what it makes clear people might think of him: someone not only with nothing if he doesn't work for it, but who attracts the attention of anyone who hates the witch/cult which could be anyone, and has a suspicious connection with the witch which he's physically incapable of explaining if it becomes a problem. Before the second last loop he thought Rem killed him every time at that point, meaning he'd spent weeks trying to gain the trust of people he likes and it wouldn't budge her hatred of him due to the witch. In the successful try Emilia sees him trying to bluff through being mistrusted by Rem and breaks through his facade. And they can completely connect without knowing why, because Emilia is also putting on a front constantly, she'll try to scare off people she thinks will be hurt because of her and she's excessively kind because she's guilty and believes she did something that maybe justifies people treating her as a threat.
Then there's also the guilt, after ep 13 he blames himself even if it's unreasonable and this is constantly augmented by people killing him. Every time Puck killed him he blamed him for Emilia's death(as well as himself), and when Petelgeuse killed Rem he also blamed Subaru over and over. In that situation, Subaru would have far too big a complex about deaths around him always being his fault to go on after leaving everyone but Rem to die. Subaru in Rem/sloth if never gets over it. They never speak of Ram or Emilia, even if they had a long life they were broken from grief.
... So do you understand? How deep the unspoken connections between Subaru and Emilia are, almost none of his actions can be reduced to an obsessive crush. He just made the right decision and with all the parallels you can imagine Subaru leaving behind Emilia would be like leaving himself, as people are trying to kill him because the country now thinks he's a sin archbishop. Except that he hates himself but feels guilty over Emilia.

The fucking Dragon Patrasche has more of a claim over Subaru than she does. The dragon saves his life like at least 3 times...Even sacrificing herself. Emilia doesn't do jack shit and couldn't care less about Subaru.
Even Petra showed more interest in him and she's like 12..
